Re: Pre-Horror Challenge 17: Building of the Optional Lists (Themes, Subset, & Checklist)
A reminder there's no rule saying when voting for returning themes that you can't combine a couple (or more) older themes together to form a combo theme.

Re: Pre-Horror Challenge 17: Building of the Optional Lists (Themes, Subset, & Checklist)
Anyone else from the RIP list that should be on the theme suggestions list? All we have is Julie Strain. There aren't really any horror icons that have passed this time (knock on wood), especially compared to last year's with John Saxon, Stuart Gordon and Ennio Morricone.

Re: Pre-Horror Challenge 17: Building of the Optional Lists (Themes, Subset, & Checklist)
We have had a few audio commentary themes over the years but never a Historian/Film Critic Audio Commentary theme (fairly sure). Maybe as a combo with Documentaries because I know there are some commentary haters out there.

As a counterpoint to No One Dies, how about movies where everyone dies.https://www.imdb.com/list/ls058962520/
This one seems familiar, but I can't find if we've done this before. |

Whoa! Didn't expect a barrage of last-minute suggestions.
A reminder theme voting starts tonight, and it'll probably be late night considering there's still a few to go. |

Stephen Thrower (some are video and booklet essays): https://thedigitalbits.com/tag/stephen-thrower Kim Newman has to be on there. Kat Ellinger, David Kalat, Amanda Reyes ...who else? Here's the past links from the checklist. A few are RMC links (or taken from) and are probably not up-to-date: Joe Bob Briggs John Carpenter Larry Cohen Joe Dante Herschell Gordon Lewis Tim Lucas George A. Romero Guillermo del Toro David del Valle |
Re: Pre-Horror Challenge 17: Building of the Optional Lists (Themes, Subset, & Checklist)
For the past three years now we've had 5 themes based on books with Studies In Terror, Heavy Metal Movies, Nightmare USA, Paperbacks from Hell, and Analog Nightmares. This year we have a couple suggestions with The Ultimate Guide to Strange Cinema and Suburban Grindhouse. Gotta say I love the book-related ones, and some were chosen by what's on my bookshelf, while the others compelled me to go out and buy the actual book each time. Maybe we should make this a reoccurring theme with a new book every year? Just thinking out loud as I prep this.

A lot of those seem to be Directors commentating on their own movies, admittedly well. The idea I was getting at would be someone not involved with the film at all that is doing a commentary on it (like what Joe Bob did, not on his show but on his DVD audio commentaries). A few examples that pop to mind would be the commentary on Creature From The Black Lagoon, Godzilla & Day Of The Dead. Alas a bit of a lack of internet lists on the subject but it is a feature I am seeing a lot on pre 90's horror.

Re: Pre-Horror Challenge 17: Building of the Optional Lists (Themes, Subset, & Checklist)
Female Killers (Ladies Who Kill) ~ No One Dies
It's been brought up these two themes contain spoilers. They're both currently on post 6. If the majority wants them removed, I will need more feedback. I'm fine with whatever decision is made, but I'm not making it myself as I've gotten flack for doing so in the past. There's also the option of changing the former to Female Protagonist, which is at 697 titles. |
Re: Pre-Horror Challenge 17: Building of the Optional Lists (Themes, Subset, & Checklist)
No One Dies, Skeptics, Disembodied Voices, and Housekeepers are all on post 6. It turns out we have already covered gas station attendants back in 2014 with 'Retail Establishment Terrors' alongside markets and shopping malls. This was one of the many Hollie Horror lists we've used over the years that was separated later into its own theme.

Re: Pre-Horror Challenge 17: Building of the Optional Lists (Themes, Subset, & Checklist)
I'm gonna have to postpone theme voting until tomorrow night (7/29). Too much to do and not enough time to do it. That puts us at 3 days behind last year's schedule, but that's still a good place to be. We'll catch up later.

Just realized it's MTV's 40th anniversary so I tacked it onto the Yo! OHMC Raps theme (w/ new link) since it sorta ties together, which makes it a feature theme. It's horror films with tie-in music videos, rap songs/videos, used by rappers sampling horror movie soundtracks, and simply making references in their music. Yo! Horror Documentaries / Film Historian Approved:
Horror Documentaries - https://www.imdb.com/search/title/?t...&genres=horror (871 titles) Horror Documentaries 2 - https://letterboxd.com/newarchive/li...taries/detail/ (137 titles) Kim Newman - https://johnnyalucard.com/non-fiction/dvd-notes/ (??? titles) The Hysteria Continues - https://letterboxd.com/thccommentari...taries/detail/ (49 titles) Joe Bob Briggs - https://forum.dvdtalk.com/dvd-talk/6...l#post12901903 (11 titles) Tim Lucas - https://forum.dvdtalk.com/dvd-talk/6...l#post12901911 (5 titles) Stephen Thrower - https://thedigitalbits.com/tag/stephen-thrower (?? titles) (1,073 total titles) Here's this hybrid that's now on post 6. No, it's not complete. If it makes the cut I'll compile the Kim Newman entries into just commentaries since it's interspersed with linear notes. Hopefully we can find some more films with film historian commentaries, too. And yes, technically we have used horror docs back during the first theme nights list in 2009, but for some unbeknownst reason I didn't include links, so there you go. |

Re: Pre-Horror Challenge 17: Building of the Optional Lists (Themes, Subset, & Checklist)
Here's the annual taking a moment to shed a spotlight on the forgotten among us and remind everyone of their existence. These theme suggestions have been hanging around here since this thread started in 2015, and possibly even longer for some:
The Horror of War: (veterans, war scenes, war segments, war related zombies, war crimes, war ghosts, soldiers, bunkers, military, military base, etc.) https://letterboxd.com/holliehorror/...of-war/detail/ (210 titles) I Spit on Your Garage: (horror films featuring a garage/parking lot/parking garage/car park/mechanic shop, etc.) https://letterboxd.com/holliehorror/...garage/detail/ (268 titles) The Pen is Deadlier Than the Sword - Writers: (horror films with a central character who is a writer) https://letterboxd.com/holliehorror/...riters/detail/ (158 titles) Blood Showers: (water turning to blood from a sink, bathtub, shower, drain in a shower/bathtub, etc. and just plain showers) https://letterboxd.com/holliehorror/...-blood/detail/ (43 titles) http://flashbak.com/bathroom-nightma...-cinema-21319/ (18 titles) (61 total titles) Stop Motion Animation Horror: http://www.buried.com/horrormovies/k...s/stop_motion/ (116 titles) Some have come close, while others will never know the thrill of victory. (here's looking at you, 2016's Necrophilia in Horror Films). Also plenty of potential returning themes that have only been used once. See post 2 for those. |
