They've got something for everyone.

And just for convenience's sake, here are the video companies that have already been used:

2015 - Vestron
2016 - Embassy
2017 - Media
2018 - Prism
2019 - Thorn EMI / HBO
2020 - Lightning

Sounds great to me. If anyone else has any more nominations let me know and we'll do the usual voting. If not, United it is.

Damn. That was a great werewolf page. Updated to this and this. The doc links are being worked on, will have to compile a couple.

For the September challenge it's currently being decided on in this thread.

We're now at 8 subset volunteers needed.

I'm working on updating post 9, BTW. My ISP is currently updating/improving their broadband infrastructure and I've had a very spotty connection with some outages over the last couple of days. I'm very slowly getting things done.

Chad, if United Home Video feels a bit limited, you could always add in its parent company, VCI, calling the subset video pick VCI/United (or United/VCI). It'll open up the field of possible subset films quite a bit.

Here's a link to the VHS tapes distributed by VCI: https://vhscollector.com/index.php/d...vci-home-video

And here's a link about Bill Blair and how he founded these companies, and how they evolved into today's VCI Entertainment: https://www.vcientertainment.com/about-us/

Post #9 updated ...as of this post.

8 subset volunteers still needed.

Hulu added to the streaming theme.

VCI/United, 2, 3 is now the official 1980's Video Companies Spotlight choice and has been added to the theme.

I would love to pick that theme but also absolutely don't feel like it has to be me. And now that I am looking into it it seems like the Slither blu-ray is pretty out of print... maybe a little less accessible then I was intending.

Some alts might be I Bought A Vampire Motorcycle, Split Second, Cutting Class or Harpoon.

^Don't worry, the chances of SB getting attached to that theme are extremely high.

Also this didn't even cross my mind until now...

Should we go the chrono route and have four picks for the 'Four Seasons of Death' theme, or just stick to one?

I try to do all the chronological movies, but may not get them all done in one day. I would likely try to be consistent with the four seasons.

Slither is available for free streaming on Amazon Prime, and it's free with ads on Tubi, for those who don't have an Amazon account. Just sayin'.

I try to do the subset films in the day they were assigned so it would be tougher to do two 4 movie marathons. So I would probably rather stick to one, but that being said, I'm just one person so it wouldn't be too big of a problem with doing it twice. It's my obsession so I will be happy with what is decided.

Wouldn’t a movie set in one of the “Four Seasons of Death” include every horror movie ever made? Every single movie takes place in at least one of the seasons ;).

Voting one. If the objective is to encourage discussion about film(s) then it might be best to keep it with just one so more people can participate and focus on the agreed on subset film rather than splitting sometimes limited participation across 4. Personally I'll probably try for seeing one from each season but it might be nice to keep the threshold for subsets at a minimum so they seem approachable for newbies or lightweights.
For the same reason it might be worth considering condensing Chronological Years down maybe just one anniversary date (at least 100 years is kind of a stretch).

Ha. Wild card day? Although there are a lot of movies that are 'season agnostic' where there is no obvious clue which season it's set in versus films like Jaws set during Spring Break or Halloween which are steeped in seasonal vibes. Some of the more open ended themes have been nice because they allow more flexibility.

Alright, we're down to 5 subset volunteers needed.

Post 9 is updated as of this post.

Currently there's 26 volunteers with 15 that have given picks.

For those that haven't given picks, plan to give more, or are considering volunteering, I'll be giving an update on what themes we're lacking in very soon.

Re: Pre-Horror Challenge 17: Building of the Optional Lists (Themes, Subset, & Checklist)

If you haven't heard, the former September Criterion challenge is now the Indie/Arthouse challenge, which means an Indie/Arthouse Crossover on 9/30 for us. It'll cover the following distributors and streaming channels:
<BR>I'll put it up on the themes list on post 7 once I figure out how to properly link it.

Also, Travis is looking to add a bit of horror flavor to the Indie/Arthouse checklist. He's looking for anywhere between five to ten items that might make for a good checklist sub-section that would appeal to us horror participants that can't wait until October. Any help would be appreciated.

Here's that theme count from the 16 that have given subset picks so far:

Elvira - 7
Overlook - 5
Fermentation - 11
Joe Bob - 8
Unofficial - 10
School - 13
Suburban - 10
One - 56
Documentary - 5
Giallo - 6
Streaming - 16
Chrono - 13
Skeptic - 13
Mystery - 22
Hooded - 5
Video - 1
Asian - 7
Subterranean - 8
Ladies - 9
Vampires - 7
Seasons - 10

Letterboxd - 10
Theater - 12
Anthologies - 6
Supernatural - 29
Slasher - 33 / Serial - 5

Re: Pre-Horror Challenge 17: Building of the Optional Lists (Themes, Subset, & Checklist)

Some subset suggestions:
  • Forest of Lost Souls [free with ads on Vudu] - fits Ladies and Slasher themes. [Sexy Killer is good and also fits these themes but not readily available]
  • Wilding [on Netflix] - fits Overlook, Ladies, & Werewolf themes.
  • Daughters of Darkness [on Arrow channel, free with ads on Vudu] - fits Ladies, Chronological (1971), Vampires, Joe Bob, and European themes.
  • Absentia [on Shudder & AMC+] - fits Suburban, Subterranean, and Supernatural themes.
  • Hi-8 (Horror Independent 8) [cheaper rental on Amazon] - fits Video Store, Anthology, Slasher, Ladies, and Suburban themes
  • Tales of Halloween [on Shudder, DirectTV, AMC+, Vudu free with ads, IMDB TV, etc] - fits Skeptics, Anthology, Halloween, Seasons (Fall) themes.
If these don't fit I can suggest others. Thanks all.

That's hard to say at this point. All I can say is we're pretty much exactly where we were this time last year, right down to the 3 subset spots being left part. Currently 19 of the 28 volunteers have given picks. The 2020 list was posted on 9/9, so we're actually not doing too bad all things considering.

Re: Pre-Horror Challenge 17: Building of the Optional Lists (Themes, Subset, & Checklist)

Since it's been brought up that the RIP list needs an update, we need to decide on what the specific cut-off number should be.

What's the minimum amount of titles a recently deceased actor should have to their name to make the R.I.P. list:

a) 2. (current number)
b) 3.
c) 4.
d) 5.

e) Other.

Coincidently, RIP Marilyn Eastman of NOTLD fame.

Coincidently, RIP Marilyn Eastman of NOTLD fame.

I think 5 genre films should be the limit for including deceased actors, because I like being able to choose from a body of work instead of just one or two films.
