Vote to separate Giallo. Always seemed like almost an entire different genre to me. As stated previously, as long as it is kept at the end of the list, I don’t see the harm of keeping the optional items. After all, they are optional.

I noticed that Shudder has been sponsoring a lot of YouTube videos lately. Maybe they'd be willing to sponsor the horror challenge.

Saturn 3 (1980)
Hardware (1990)
Colosus: The Forbin Project (1970)
Maximum Overdrive (1986)
The Car (1977)
The Lift (1983)
Gog (1954)
Demon Seed (1977)
Killdozer (1974)
Laserblast (1987)
Christine (1983)
The Mangler (1995)

Odd that I couldn't think of anything from the Sixties...plenty to choose from this century too.

Looks like we've covered that in 2012 with Killer Robots / Evil Technology, so can't go on the new suggestions list, but it can always come back as a returning theme. The latter link's a dead one and working on finding something there, BTW.

Re: Pre-Horror Challenge 17: Building of the Optional Lists (Themes, Subset, & Checklist)

Another off the comments thread. In the past I compiled a list of Shudder originals that never made it onto the suggestions list for whatever reason. Good thing I screwed that up as this one's much better and the list has practically doubled since...

Streaming Originals & Exclusives:
Shudder Originals & Exclusives - https://letterboxd.com/henry_parker/...usives/detail/ (138 titles)
Shudder Originals Only - https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_o...al_programming (49 titles included in the above)
Netflix Originals - https://letterboxd.com/randommr411/l.../genre/horror/ (27 titles)
Amazon Originals - https://letterboxd.com/raggedyryan/l.../genre/horror/ (9 titles)
HBO Max Originals - https://letterboxd.com/twenty8se7en/.../genre/horror/ (1 title) (175 total titles)

For Shudder I included both the originals and exclusives. If you'd prefer to keep the list "pure" with originals only let me know. Just be aware that would omit 89 off the list and titles such as One Cut of the Dead would not be included.

Any other services to add?

You might also want to try Arrow. They've been very active on social media promoting their streaming service.

Maybe an Arrow or Shudder theme day, and they can do the subset pick. In return, maybe they can give us a shout out on their social media and a free month promo code. Or something like that.

Scratch that. Looking back I'm not 100% certain the latter link covered machines specifically, so I'll put it on the new suggestions list and probably pair up it up with killer robots, that is, if it doesn't provide enough on its own. If I can't find a link that isn't heavy on the internet-related horror we'll just have to continue compiling it ourselves. IMDB keywords are no help, but did contribute I Bought a Vampire Motorcycle and Galaxy of Horrors (2017).

Then you have movies like Christine, May, Otis, Jacob's Ladder, Valerie and Her Week of Wonders, What Have You Done to Solange, Rosemary's Baby. Just an idea.

IMDB keyword search sort of came through with this one but there's definitely more...

No, the closest we've had is a female directed theme in 2017.

Here's a couple links courtesy of Letterboxd and IMDB, and I'm sure there's quite a few duplicates between the two:

I like this but maybe needlessly worry about spoilers; I guess 'female' isn't too big of a clue or too modern a twist.

Army of Darkness
Phantasm II
Aliens
Halloween II...

Martial arts is on the suggestions list but will tack on that IMDB link to it. Eco was covered as 'Natural Horror Films', and it's due for a comeback as a returning theme as it's only been covered once back in 2010. Same for arthouse in 2012. And 'Bigfoots, Yetis & Tiny Terrors' in 2015. Some of these are under so many different names it's hard to tell what we have/haven't done.

Added explosions to post 6.

For 'Extreme Extremities' here's the long fingers list from the tvtropes.org list since there's no way to link the examples section...
Black Swan
Frankenstein

The Babadook
Nosferatu
Nosferatu the Vampyre

Dracula
Alien

John Carpenter's The Thing (1982)
The Witches (1990)

Back after a brief hiatus that was extended after a 36 hour internet outage...

16 subset spots down, 15 to go.

Hooded & Cloaked Figures is on post 6 and still working on that last batch of suggestions. I'll be posting all the 'new for 2021' suggestions up to this point in here soon as well as a theme voting date.

We're also a little short on anniversaries with just the two so far. Christopher Lee's 100th isn't until next year. Yeah, I got nothing. Please share if you have something because we'll also be using them as checklist entries.

A couple of announcements...

Theme Voting starts Wednesday (July 28).
Gotta keep moving. We're already at last year's new suggestion number of 25, and that's not even including the few that haven't been posted yet. Those will go up soon. Continue sharing if you have any more. Don't forget reminders are always in the wiki.

Gialli and Slashers are now officially separated!
It was unanimous.

Also added Streaming Originals & Exclusives and Extreme Extremities to post 6. With the former it's hard to add 'originals' from Arrow and other labels without turning it into a boutique label theme, and we'll have the crossover theme anyway. The latter (and others) that have lists compiled will have better links if they make the cut.

Re: Pre-Horror Challenge 17: Building of the Optional Lists (Themes, Subset, & Checklist)

Just a suggestion here for the RIP list. I would disregard anyone that only has 1-3 horror movies to their name. Kind of makes it difficult to 1) find that movie and 2) rent that movie if everyone is trying to rent it But like I said, it's just a suggestion.

That's the rough cut version. I'll eventually post them in order, and the cutoff is usually at 2 and over. But yeah, I can exclude those that are under 4, just need some more feedback from people.

I was going to suggest the idea, but I found that it was already done in 2015... I'd love School's Out... Forever to make a return.

Also maybe Deadly Tumbleweeds (Desert Horror) could be a fun one. Or Deadly Tropics

Added Deadly Tumbleweeds to post 6. The latter I'll have to get back to you. It sounds very familiar, but I could be wrong.

The closest I found was deserted islands (which isn’t quite the same), but I may have missed something.
