I see what you mean. I was taking your statement literally as in, "Yes, there are still cartoons airing on Saturday morning." Frankly, I was not aware that any broadcast networks were still running cartoons on Saturday mornings. Given the competition from various cable networks and home video and on-demand, it probably doesn't make economic sense anymore.

I'm with you shadokitty and that was the gist of my query. The "Major Broadcast Networks" are the ones that count with me - mainly because that's how it was when I was a kid, and when my kids were kids. Cartoon Network started in 92 - my youngest was 10 that year but we didn't get the channel until years later. The last time I bothered to check Saturday mornings on "The Networks" was a sea of news and other non-kid friendly programming.

Cartoons just seemed more "special" when we only got a hour per day on weekdays and that ~6 hour Saturday morning block. My kids had Bozo and a few of the more infamous "advertising" cartoons every afternoon but still had to wait until Saturday for their main "fix." My grandkids can watch cartoons on one or another cable channel all day, every day, if it were allowed. Barring *that* they can just stream what they want. Even the 5 year old has a tablet and can stream stuff if she can't find what she wants on a cable channel.

And it's rather sad. Saturday mornings always seemed more special because of cartoons all morning. Sure, we had a early morning cartoon show and Captain Kangaroo but they went off at 8am and only 1 choice/channel aired those. I remember that being home from school sick wasn't much fun because there wasn't anything to watch on TV. It was soaps, news, and other adult programming until The Happy Hal Show came on (after school). That was a hour and a half of Looney Tunes, Little Rascals, The Three Stooges, and more.

We also spent more time outside playing than many kids do today. But we had far less inside stuff to be able to do.

Yeah, the weekday afternoon viewing back in the day was a waste up until the after-school kids shows came on. Sometimes there were movies on. I remember watching GIANT FROM THE UNKNOWN and FRANKENSTEIN'S DAUGHTER during the afternoon when I was home sick from school. But neither film was that good. Also, FINGER OF GUILT, an English film with Richard Basehart. A little over my head for a kid, but I knew Basehart from VOYAGE TO THE BOTTOM OF THE SEA.

There were programs for pre-schoolers and they were pretty dull if you weren't that age group, but occasionally these shows ran cartoons. I remember seeing a cartoon with caricatures of Mae West and W.C. Fields on one of these shows, plus a Terrytoon from 1938 called "Robinson Crusoe's Broadcast," which was pretty damned funny and I'd love to see it again. Who's got all those Terrytoons?

Saturday mornings when I was a kid we watched "Howdy Doody" and a lot of westerns, like "The Roy Rogers Show" and the modern western, "Sky King." Some cartoon shows, yes, but I don't recall which ones.

There are undoubtedly other sites, but here is one that lets you look at the Saturday morning lineup by year.

I remember when I was a kid, always knowing when the new season of Saturday morning cartoons was going to start, because the Saturday morning preview shows would air. I was also lucky in that I got a Canadian channel that aired cartoons all afternoon on Saturday as well. That was where I watched MASK for the first time.

Absolutely! Plus we got TV Guide and I'd have that sucker memorized! We got a Tarzan/Shirley Temple double feature *every* Saturday afternoon (1pm) for 15-20 years. I've seen those series so many times I pretty much have them memorized.

What always tripped me up was during the fall *new* show premier time the CBS affiliate pre-empted regular programming for ~1 months for "The Mid-South Talent Review" which was a live-in-studio preview show of the people who would be competing at the Mid-South Fair. Boring... at least to a kid who wanted to see those new CBS cartoons (I'm sure there were some proud parents/relatives but did they *really* have to air that stuff?)! Of course it came on opposite "Studio Wrestling" on the NBC station (it aired *every* Saturday all year so you knew that hour was "dead" for those NBC offerings). That left only the ABC affiliate starting at 10:30 or 11am and it never failed that at least *one* show I wanted to watch was CBS or NBC. Then once a month grandma would come to the house. She *loved* "Studio Wrestling" which meant I had to give up the TV for her to watch that program. I have good memories of her reactions watching that show but I hated it back then.

You can also get those Saturday morning TV schedules on wikipedia.

Thanks to my post office losing my package, my copy of Gargoyles that was delivered yesterday, still wasn't waiting for me to pick up when I checked my box at the post office today. Who knows when I'll get it now?

That really sucks. If you have the tracking code, they should be able to see where it went. I had a package at Christmas that went MIA and they found it. It ended up smashed and took a couple weeks, but they did hunt it down.

Re: The 7th Annual Animation Challenge Discussion Thread!

I finally decided to give Bob's Burgers a try, and it's great! I'm only six episodes into the first season, but I'm already loving the characters, especially ball of awkward anxiety that is Tina. As a fan of Archer and Dr. Katz, Professional Therapist, I'm partial to the deadpan of H. Jon Benjamin.

I also finished up an anime series called Sands of Destruction that I started last month. It's a short series based on a JRPG about a world populated by humans, beast men, and "ferals" (which seem to be human/beast hybrids). The ferals look mostly like humans with animal features such as ears, horns, tails, etc. While it felt like many other fantasy/adventure anime series, there were some interesting ideas. Unfortunately, there isn't a lot of time to explore any of them.

And Toph is pretty awesome.

Just finished my re-watch of Batman: The Animated Series and it continues to hold up really well. I still believe that Batman: Mask of the Phantasm is one of the finest Batman films available and I wish it would get remastered for blu. On to Batman Beyond.

The Clone Wars isn't taking nearly as long as I thought it'd take to go through. I already started season 5 last night. I don't want to start another series I won't be able to finish by the end of the month, so I'm not sure what I want to do next.

Movies and shorts or most modern anime is only 12-13 episodes (sometimes shorter) these days. Or if you're feeling slightly ambitioius, I would suggest Gurren Lagann or Kill La Kill. They're both 22 or 23 episodes long, but were made for burning through, though it must be said, they were made with a seasoned anime fan in mind.

I plan to focus the rest of the month on Gargoyles, GI Joe, and The Transformers, DVD wise, but will still include Roku, Dish, and possibly other DVDs. I just couldn't really get into He-Man that much. Maybe it was my mood, or maybe it just hasn't held up.

I guess I could finally get around to watching that Serial Experiments Lain set I bought a million years ago. That or try to get through all of the original He-Man. I know I'll need to break that up with movies since it'll burn me out.

Re: The 7th Annual Animation Challenge Discussion Thread!

I've been slowly working through my to watch pile. I'm down to one movie and one TV show. I did pick up a couple at the library today that I'll probably watch first, Fantastic Planet and Paddington.

I have to admit this has been a slow month with watches me. Real life is creeping in a bit so while I have been reading the thread, I really haven't been able to add much to it. I hope by next week things will slow down a bit more so I can get some more consistent watching in.

That being said, I do see the posts pretty quickly, so if anyone has questions or problems, I will see them and try to answer them as quick as I can.

On the up side, I did get the prizes finalized today. They will be:

Prize Pack 1: Disney: The Art of Frozen (book) and The Last Unicorn

Prize Pack 2: Who Framed Roger Rabbit BR and Plymptoons

Prize Pack 3: TV Toons To Go and Batfink: The Complete Series

I ended up marathoning Season 3 in one day. It's a really excellent show. I'm glad I watched it. I'm going to take a short break before starting into The Legend of Korra.

Next up is Magi: The Labyrinth of Magic. I've been wanting to check it out for a while.

Nice looking prizes.

One thing I've noticed about Gargoyles. Xanatos is voiced by Jonathan Frakes, and with him having a goatee, he actually looks quite a bit like Commander Riker. Disney seemed to spare no expense on hiring voice actors, as there are quite a few big names in the cast, for both regulars, and recurring characters.

Thanks.

I should spring for this. I remember enjoying it when it was on tv but never sat down and watched it through. I remember enjoying Frakes' voice in the role, though.

Don't know how much season 2 volume 2 is, but I want to say Season 1 and Volume 1 of Season 2 are only about $8 - $10 each on Amazon.
