The 7th Annual August Animation Challenge!
List thread here when live. Last year's challenge threads: Discussion and List The Details Challenge starts July 31st at 12:01 am local time. Challenge ends September 1st at dawn. Rules Movies/TV shows should be labeled Animation from either imdb.com or allmovie.com. Other labels don't matter as long as there is at least a Animation label from one of those sites. Action/Animation would be fine. This is the challenge where any and all types of animation is welcome, computer, hand drawn, puppetry, stop motion, etc. The entire movie/show does not need to be completely animated. Something like Roger Rabbit or a Ray Harryhausen film would generally be allowed. If anyone has a problem with something someone watches or just wants an opinion on if it's animation or not, ask here. Animation documentaries are allowed but not DVD featurettes/interviews that are just fluff promo pieces. As with the other challenges, the lists must be numbered or it won't count. Watching the movie/show with the commentary can counted as unique items. Watching multiple versions(theatrical and director's cut) of the same movie/show will also count. Lists Since the general consensus seems to be for the easy counting method we will go with that. However, it is not required, so if you wish to count another way, feel free, as I will not be doing stats. It's that time of year! Animation challenge! Yay!
There is a bit of a change to the check list, please take a look. I've added actors/actresses to watch. The list was created last year and I just copied/pasted it into the list. Please let me know if there are any last minute additions you think that would add to it. Or even if there is someone there that shouldn't be. Thanks! |

In anticipation of the challenge I've already picked up the Filmation Fantastic Voyage (1968). It's trippy and nonsensical, but great music. It's not really something you can burn through, so I'll probably cherry pick one or two episodes a week. I've also got Le Roi et l'Oiseau (1953) winging it's way to me. Unfortunately I'll probably have finished Netflix's third season of The Adventures of Puss in Boots, by the time the challenge starts.
Have we decided if something like The Jungle Book (2016) counts as an animated movie? |

This and the Sci-fi/Fantasy Challenge are my two favorite challenges, and I have plenty to watch. I've already been watching some sci-fi animation for the current challenge. I enjoy watching my CGI documentaries on prehistoric creatures as well.

I'm going to start with Star Wars: The Clone Wars and see how far I can get. Throw some movies in as well, like Shaun the Sheep and Minions. Maybe some Ray Harryhausen if I have some unwatched ones.

I *really* need to start the Superman: The Animated Series and Justice League/JL: Unlimited sets I have. I'm thinking I'll concentrate on those and the newly re-released Shaun the Sheep seasons. Oh... I also have the 50s Gumby set... Dang... too many choices again.

Sorry, didn't get a chance to see it. Anyone else who did want to chime in? At first look, I'd have to say no. However, if the movie has more than 50% CGI, it would count. If no one else chimes in, let that be your guide. If you honestly think it's more CGI than live action, count it.

Are the backgrounds all CGI as well as the animals? If 50% of the whole movie is CGI, it'd count. Like I mentioned, I haven't watched it yet, so if you think it is, you can count it.

I've seen it. The actor playing Mowgli is pretty much the only thing that's not CGI although I can't be sure he wasn't CGI-enhanced in some way also.

I just read an article about Life, Animated, a documentary about an autistic boy who only learned to talk through watching Disney movies. It looks like an amazing film and I would love to see it. Unfortunately, the closest showing is tomorrow 2 hours away. :( If anyone is interested, here is a list of dates and places it's being shown.
If you see it between now and the start of the animation challenge, you may count it in your lists as it is a special showing, not a wide release. |

Our local art house theater screened the new remastered Belladonna of Sadness from 1973 Japan. I'll put it on my list as the first entry but won't count it, I guess. Too bad they didn't wait a week! ;)

No one had any other suggestions for the checklist so I'm calling that finalized. The challenge starts in just a little bit (may have started for some). Don't forget if you're participating in the Sci-fi/Fantasy challenge, you can get double credit!
