The Dark Knight doesn't have sci-fi or fantasy but I remember people getting vocal when I didn't want to include it.

I also didn't think all MST3K episodes should count because not all of the films they do would qualify on their own for this challenge.

But surely the bumper material, what with the spaceship, robots, assorted alien life-forms and giant reptiles, etc..., would automatically make every episode qualify for the challenge

In a similar vein... I picked up Paddington Bear (2014) this afternoon and out of idle curiosity, checked IMDB, I mean, it's about a talking bear, after all, but lo and behold, it's only listed as 'family, comedy'. Please.

For movies that didn't count, I was fine with allowing that stuff to count as shorts. Now that I don't run it, I'm glad I don't have to deal with that stuff again.

As some disagree with 'animation' being treated as a genre*, I feel the same way about 'family'. I'm happier with a review saying a horror film is fine for the entire family, rather than seeing it get two genres, horror and family. Maybe it's fine for your family but it might not be fine for mine.

*The main purpose of that challenge was to be able to watch sci-fi/horror stuff that used stop motion animation. I never actually cared about watching animated cartoons but I'm also not so dense to not realize that's what most people would end up wanting to watch.

My goal for the challenge is to probably keep watching Dark Shadows. I started last October and I'm about 3/4 done. I'm at a good point now where there's some prequel action going on in the late 1890s and once the storyline gets tiresome, I'll break it up with some sci-fi films.

I can see where you're coming from on the MST3K movies, but I do agree about the bumper material part that coyoteblue mentions. The whole premise takes place in space, it has a Sci-Fi tag at IMDb.com, so it counts.

Hmm, you're right, it doesn't have a fantasy genre listed. Not at allmovies.com either. I'd think it counts, though, talking bear seems pretty obviously fantasy to me. To be fair, though, I'd say use one of your wildcards for it. It'd be fine to use in the checklist, though, if you want to.

Just a couple bits of maintenance about the challenge that's only a day away! I'm going to make a separate post but I just got final clearance on the prizes for the challenge. I think we've come up with some good ones, so stay tuned! I also just noticed that the list thread hasn't been sticky'd yet, so I'm going to go and try to get that done.

Re: The Official 8th Annual Sci-Fi/Fantasy Challenge Discussion Thread

Alright, time for PRIZES!!!

Thanks again to HAMILTONBOOKS and Goldenwheels! They were very generous this month and so I am able to offer 5 different prize packs.

*Please note that you do have to live in the United States to be able to receive the prizes!

1. Alien Outpost BR and Star Trek: Enterprise S. 1

2. The Extraordinary Adventures of Adele Blanc-Sec, J.R.R. Tolkien: Master of the Rings and Lord of the Rings the Animated Classic.

3. Man with the Screaming Brain, Giorgio Moroder Presents Metropolis and the book, 101 Sci-Fi Movies to See Before You Die

4. Science Fiction Theatre Complete Series

5. Thunderbirds Complete Series

I do have a question for all of the participants. I was wondering if people would like it if I split the winners a bit differently. There would still be 3 random winners that would be able to chose from the first three prize packs like we've done in the past. The last two would be chosen by myself again, but this time for either having a really good discussion post or say a really good banner in the list thread. Or even a different reason if someone wants to suggest one! Please let me know if you'd like this or would rather I just pick 5 random winners. I'll make the final decision by the end of this weekend, so please let me know of any comments or concerns! Thank you!

Me neither! I'm almost tempted to have it start at midnight, but it's a little late notice, so dusk tomorrow still stands!

Great looking prizes. A big thanks to Goldenwheels. As well as to LJG for running the Challenge.

IMDB lists it as sci-fi, so, watch away. It's good.

Since dusk is so late this time of year (just past 9:00 pm for me), I'm just gonna watch one or two tv episodes of something. My Little Pony: Friendship is Magic or Eureka or something.

I'm debating between continuing Season 3 of Ancient Aliens, or perhaps some Time Tunnel for double credit. Probably go with choice number 1.

I've been working on my list of movies to watch this challenge and have found Netflix streaming movies to be not as good as the past (I try not to rewatch movies). Does anyone use the various free movie channels that are on the Roku to help fill out their list? I would appreciate any suggestions anyone might have.

Most of them are public domain movies, but I enjoy them. Cowboys and Aliens has serials too, such as Flash Gordon, and Superman.

I just looked on imdb, to look up a couple movies of mine. How can Rise of Cobra be Sci-fi, but Green Lantern isn't?

I thought of a few more good Roku channels. Hasbro Free has all four seasons of Transformers Generation One as well as Conan the Adventurer. Con TV has a decent selection of sci-fi movies as well. Shout Factory has MST3K, and while I'm not sure of the free selection, as it's a free channel, but sub optional, is Iron Fist. It has the Heisei Gamera movies, the Daimajin movies, as well as Ultraman.

You see, I've lost friends and family trying to spread the truth about this.

People used to think giant squids were fake until the first photographic evidence 11 years ago, and even then some people still doubted it's existence.

You'd be surprised at how many movies youtube has. Just search for some old sf movie, like Things to Come (1936) and then start checking out the links to other movies on the right.

I understand now. Maybe I should have watched it for the Historical Appreciation Challenge.

THINGS TO COME is now out on a Criterion Blu-ray, which I have and plan to watch for this challenge. And my Criterion ISLAND OF LOST SOULS DVD.

I started watching my box set of Science Fiction Theatre over the weekend. I watched the first four episodes. Enough to make me want to watch the remaining 74 eps. for this challenge--if possible. Great stuff.

I've got the Legend dvd of THINGS TO COME. If I can find it I'll put it in the queue and see what happens.

I can reassure you, Green Lantern IS Sci-Fi. On IMDb, you have to scroll down to the second, longer set and the genre is listed! Otherwise, I was coming to tell you, having seen that one, it definitely would count!

Right! I forgot to check the extended genre list. The top of the page did not mention sci-fi. Thanks!

I seem to get mixed signals sometimes as to whether zombie movies/shows ALWAYS count as sci-fi or not. Are we in agreement that they are?

That makes sense.

When the challenge first started, Ghostbusters didn't count according to imdb but it's since been given a fantasy genre (personally, I'd go with sci-fi). Allmovie.com is another good place to check genres. Amazon.com if you're feeling feisty.
