You might as well make a list! Watch what you want, but if it counts, put them on. Quality is better than quantity!

Just got back from watching "Tomorrowland." I thought it was alright. I was glad I had read the prequel book before seeing it, though. I don't think this one is an instant classic but I wouldn't mind seeing it again.

I thought it started ok, then slowed down in the middle, then picked up some at the end but just wasn't all that great. I could see the people that complained about all the traveling in The Hobbit and LOTR finding the same fault here.

MISSION TO MARS is the one with the great Ennio Morricone score. I even bought the soundtrack CD.

Yeah, I kind of had the same thoughts. It took a while to get where they were going and they really leave the viewer up in the air as much as Casey in this. Then, at the end it all wraps up. Having read the book, I got what Athena was trying to but not why.

I have two announces, well, three. The first is that it is one week until the start of the challenge! I know I'm ready for it to start!

The second is that we officially have a sponsor! HamiltonBooks! Thank you, GoldenWheels!

Prizes TBD: *Please note: Winners do have to be living in the United States to be eligible for prizes.

I will also say that GoldenWheels offered a couple really nice promo prizes that I gratefully accepted that will be given out as well!

Finally, I would like to announce that the list thread is ready and up for you guys to start making your lists! It is located here.

I'm chomping at the bit for it to start. If my phone's battery wasn't so low, would likely watch something now. But power's out too.

I have plans tomorrow during the day, so it might be late before I get a chance to take a look and make a final decision about it. A friend from college is here for a couple days from out of town and we're going to go explore a couple old bridges if the weather holds. Maybe a zoo, too.
Any excuse to have to watch ScarJo, I'm good with!

Our internet is down so I may start a bit early myself (sneaking on line for a few with a friend's phone)!

Ha! Well, I can't say that I watch her movies because of that reason, but I don't think she's a bad actress and do enjoy watching the Avengers...let's just say there's eye candy there enough for everybody!

Like I mentioned above, I'm internet-less because of an outage that won't be fixed, likely, until about 1 a.m. my time. So, if there are any questions, post them and I'll be on when I can. *sigh* I hate our internet company.

Dororo (2007)
Drive Angry (2011)
Earth Vs the Flying Saucers (1956)
Eight Legged Freaks (2002)
Genocide (1968)

Invaders From Mars (1953)
Killer Klowns From Outer Space (1988)
Kronos (1957)
Moonchild (2003)
Slayers Excellent (1998)
Slayers Gorgeous (1998)
Slayers Great (1997)
Slayers Premium (2001)
Slayers Return (1996)
Slayers The Motion Picture (1995)
Slayers: The Book of Spells (1996)
The Ambushers (1967)
The Black Cauldron (1985)
The Borrowers (1997)
The Borrowers (2011)
The Corpse Bride (2005)
The Fourth Kind (2009)

The Philadelphia Experiment (1984)
Titan Maximum (2009)

Good luck on your list! There's a couple in there that I hope to get to as well. The Borrowers, are they in a 2 pack by any chance? I picked those up a while ago and kind of forgot I did...I'll have to watch those myself! I am going to do my best to not watch animation during July as I love to focus on it during August. These two challenges are my favorites, the Sci-Fi/Fantasy and Animation. I enjoy the Criterion one as well, but while I feel more...educated? have my horizons expanded? during September, I don't necessarily enjoy everything I watch, where as for these two months, it's a lot more unlikely to dislike a movie. It's more entertainment for entertainment's sake then anything else.

As you guys can tell, I'm back online. Estimate was 1 am, but about 9ish, I noticed I had a signal again. Here's hoping that won't happen again! Of course, the company won't tell us what happened, so I have no idea if this was a one off or something that I'll have to worry about...

Yup, it's a twofer. I forgot about August animation, but since easily one quarter of my collection is animation (not to mention what I can find online), I'm not gonna run out of stuff to watch for August.

I probably wouldn't run out either, to be honest, but I do like to keep them separate as I have plenty of both and am trying to clear up a bit of my unwatched piles. It's just a bit easier to pick what to watch if I focus on one genre rather than mixing. For me at least!

Animation isn't a genre, though. It's a medium (actually it's a bunch of mediums), that's unfortunately treated like a genre. It does lean pretty heavily on fantasy and sci-fi, though.

That is true. I can see that I do that, treat animation like a genre, but I think, like you said, it's because a lot of it is fantasy/sci-fi based. It wasn't until I started these challenges that I actually went beyond with animation to find the ones that had a deeper, more serious meaning. Well, I did see Grave of the Fireflies back in grad school, but I didn't really do much with it until now. With the challenges, I really have branched out and watched things like Persepolis and Waltz with Bashir. Both of which could have easily become a live action drama or documentary instead of just animation.

That being said, I still think of animation as it's own category, perhaps that is a better word than genre... Not arguing at all that many animations would fit this challenge as well, either, because you probably could spend this whole month watching them as well as next month without any problems at all!

This is just part of what I plan to watch, but so far thinking of my Irwin Allen DVD's, my Knight Rider DVD's, and if they are still on Netflix, Battlestar Galactica, and Buck Rogers.

Re: The Official 8th Annual Sci-Fi/Fantasy Challenge Discussion Thread

I ended up getting a bit of an early start. I went over to a friend's house yesterday evening for a night of movies and video games. We ended up watching the enjoyably awful The Ice Pirates which was released the year I was born (1984). It was basically a Star Wars knockoff with more knight costumes and men in rubber robot suits. While I'm hopeful that my July selections will be better, I do have some low budget kitsch on my list.

Nothing wrong with low budget. Even plan to work on some of my Mill Creek DVD's.

Since I'm starting to get burnt out on the Historical Appreciation Challenge, I've decided to mix things up and start watching sci-fi and fantasy content. I just finished an episode of Star Blazers on Roku. The manga channel has all 3 seasons.

SterlingBen, great banner! It makes me want to create something. I usually grab a screenshot of a film I plan to watch for the challenge.

I've not watched these. IMDb.com doesn't have sci-fi/fantasy listed as a genre. It does seem like they are based on Marvel comics, though. So, I'll say that it would work for the comic check mark but you'd have to use one of your 3 wildcards to count it.

That being said, if someone who's watched these thinks they do fit under the sci-fi/fantasy label, let me know, but from the summary I just read, it doesn't seem to fit the sci-fi label at all.

I wouldn't think they would count either. I've noticed, not all comic movies and shows qualify. But this is such a wide genre, one shouldn't have trouble finding something to watch.
