Re: The Official 8th Annual Sci-Fi/Fantasy Challenge Discussion Thread
You know... I totally forgot it annoyed me last year that one section had directors/producers/writers (most of whom are know for the films they directed) and there was a separate "Directed by" section. I'd suggest we change that section to "Directed/Produced/Written" by and move those folks from the "watch 6 of the following" section to the renamed section. Plus by suggesting what I did originally caused duplication of Zemeckis and Scott.
*THEN* change the old section to "He's dead, Jim" as a homage section to those who are no longer with us who were huge influences or passed in the prior year. That gives us 8 in that section with a "watch 4" mandate.
Also move that line: "Not sure what qualifies?" with its link out of the middle and put it at the bottom where it seems more logical.
I made those suggested changes in the checklist I quoted in case you want to keep them. That way the work's already done for you.

I really like the idea of "He's dead, Jim!" btw!I'll probably just leave that "Lens Flare" off unless there is an overwhelming vote to keep it. It was funny, but its time has come.

Okay, guy. I'm getting super excited about this challenge. While I'm participating in the current challenge, I find that I'm mostly watching Mad Men. I keep picking up films and then deciding to just watch handsome Don Draper drink his way through another day.
Thanks LJG765 for hosting and working on the checklist! Also, thanks for adding my suggestions! I've spent some of the evening planning what to watch. I'm hoping to get through some of my backlog as well as clearing some of my Netflix queue. I'm also planning to find a good stopping place in Mad Men so that I can either watch a new series or revisit an old favorite.

*WARNING* - *RANT*
I think *all* the uproar is silly, even *if* there's some hidden (or not) agenda. Most of it seems to come from the 30ish and under group that's become too "PC" for their own good. Their agenda seems to be to whitewash everything, to call foul on *anything*, old or new, that could remotely offend anyone. I'm of the "Don't like it? Turn it off/change the channel/don't read it." mindset. Sometimes you actually have to experience such material to understand *why* something's bad in the real world. It's a *movie* (or TV show, book) meant to entertain, not indoctrinate! If people can't tell the difference then we're all in trouble! With older material you truly have to put yourself in the mindset of the year(s) in which a product was created to fully understand where the creators were coming from. Things that *are* considered offensive now were *not* considered offensive 30-40-50 or more years ago. I get the impression from some of these people that if they made a film today about the Civil Rights movement in the 60s it'd be so squeaky clean so as to not offend anyone you'd not understand just why there was a issue.
*END RANT*
That was *not* directed at anyone here. Some things I've read this past week about GOT and some older films and TV shows by what I consider to be "overly sensitive" people got my ire up a bit and I just needed to vent.

You know what gets a bee in my bonnet? Movies and shows that take place in the past but the women in the shows do not have hair styles that fit at all in those times and are more of what you'd see in this day and age. And it's most of them. Oh lordy.

I'd have never put it there had I thought Travis would keep it in the list. I've always wondered if he did it as a additional joke...

Watch it bud!!! In the late 60s-late 70s I had hair almost to my waist, cut it in 77 to get a job, grew it longer again when I discovered they didn't care, cut it for another job in the mid 80s and kept it short until ~4 years ago when I decided it needed to be long again. It's currently about 6" past my shoulders. My wife does *not* like it... although it was about that same length when we met and married.
I agree 100%! If you're going to do a period piece make it accurate! Don't forget about those soda/beer cans prior to mid 70s or so that were stronger, and straight sided with a pull top. I've seen some programs where they're using a modern can made up to look old but it has the modern shape and pop-top rather than the pull top ring.

How about adding Scarlett Johansson to the actors list? She's been in:
Eight Legged Freaks
My Brother the Pig
The Island
The Spirit
Iron Man 2
The Avengers
The Avengers 2
Under the Skin
Her
Captain America: The Winter Soldier
Lucy
She's actually done quite a bit of genre work.

I have plans tomorrow during the day, so it might be late before I get a chance to take a look and make a final decision about it. A friend from college is here for a couple days from out of town and we're going to go explore a couple old bridges if the weather holds. Maybe a zoo, too.

We could, though I did finalize the list yesterday as people wanted to start getting their watch items ready. Any objections to adding one last person? It'd be the last addition, though!

For anyone interested in recording anything for the challenge this weekend, Dish Network is running a free preview weekend for HBO and Cinemax. I may watch it on TV rather than Sling this weekend.

I'm *really* excited for this one this year! I have several films queued up on Amazon streaming I hope to watch. Some things I think I want a physical copy of but have never seen. They're currently "free" with Prime so I'll do a preview to see if I really want them or not. Here are a few of those:
The Color Out of Space (2010) (plus it qualifies for the Lovecraft check)
Destination Inner Space (1966)
Mr. Peabody and the Mermaid (1948) (I *think* I've seen this but don't know for sure)
Evil Brain from Outer Space (1965) (another I think I've seen)
Woman In The Moon (1929) (another checklist item - Fritz Lang)
Gog (1954) (Criterion checklist item)
The Woman Eater (1958)
If I wasn't so far behind where I'd like to be in the History Challenge I'd start early.

I'll have to look those up, since I have Prime. Toying with the idea of starting early myself.

Thanks! We did have a great day yesterday. The weather cooperated and we did a bit of a road trip. Saw a couple historical bridges, a zoo, tried to go on a brewery tour but were 20 minutes too late for the last one, then finished up at a local water fall. We got home, watched a couple movies (Angels & Demons and Rio, if anyone is curious) and then finished up her visit today with a quick run to a local discounted food store. She lives about 4 states away, so I don't get a chance to see her often, but we do our best!
Thanks for reminding me! I need to go through and see if there are any good ones to record!
And, as soon as I finish this post, I'm going to update the checklist one last time to add Scarlett Johansson to it. That will be the last change for this year. If you think of anyone else you want to add, I'll put it on the list for next year.

I am getting so excited for this challenge, that I think I am going to start mixing in some sci fi with my current challenge content, watch some stuff that challenges for this month's challenge, and watch some sci fi stuff to get me in the mood for next month.

Re: The Official 8th Annual Sci-Fi/Fantasy Challenge Discussion Thread
Hastings is having a "Father's Day Sale" which prompted me to purchase some SF titles to add to the pile for next month. Here's what I ordered:
Elysium (2013) - Sounds a bit similar to the Star Trek: TOS episode "The Cloudminders" and might be interesting.
The One (2001) - The Jet Li film. I enjoy a good time travel tale and this one sounds pretty good.
The Final Cut (2004) - Robin Williams plays a cutter, someone with the power of final edit over people's recorded histories which are done via a implant. His latest assignment puts him in danger with a group who opposes the implants. I'd not heard of this one until I browsed the SF titles today.
Surrogates (2009) - Stars Bruce Willis. Set in a futuristic world where humans live in isolation and interact through surrogate robots, a cop (Willis) is forced to leave his home for the first time in years in order to investigate the murders of others' surrogates. Another I'd not heard of before browsing titles.
Mission to Mars (2000) - I *think* I've seen Mission to Mars but don't really recall. That's because it, Red Planet (2000), and Ghosts of Mars (2001) were released fairly close together.

I caught the middle of Surrogates as part of some afternoon movie and it looked good enough that I remember going online to figure out the name, even though I apparently got it when it was released back in early 2010. It's still unwatched but sometime I'll remember to get to it, within the next 1-15 years.

I don't think I'll be doing a list this year. I have too may unwatched piles to follow any order I do plan on watching the Netflix show Sense 8, re-watching the Riddick movies in Blu-ray and going through the Jurassic Park movies again.

I don't get burned out on challenges anymore, since I've switched to watching something that counts for a challenge when I'm in the mood for it. When it starts to wear on me, I watch other stuff till I get back in the mood.

Why not just make a list and if you watch something that counts, put it on. You don't have to focus entirely on the challenge, which I've stopped doing.

I have a noob question. How can I find out in the IMDB all of the science fiction genre films that Christopher Lee starred in. I used to know how but I am lost now. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

You can click on "Search" at the bottom of the page. You can then do an "Advanced Title Search". There is an option to refine your search by actor name and genre.
