Re: 6th Annual Sci Fi/Fantasy Challenge

It has been an exhausting month but I am currently in the middle of entry 100! Using traditional, not the new counting style. Movie in question is Safety Not Garanteed. First time I have made the hundred in the scifi challenge in my 3 years of participation.

Re: 6th Annual Sci Fi/Fantasy Challenge

Well, Travis and I's marathon of the first 3 seasons of ST:TOS are done with! We made it and it feels good to be done. I do have a bonus disc with "The Cage" on it that I think I'm going to watch just to be complete. Travis is watching his copy of that as he finishes the movies.

As I've been saying all along, Season 3 is the worst of all of them. There are a few episodes that aren't too bad, but so many had great premises that fell flat. That's almost worse than just having a bad plot!

I feel like I did quite well on this challenge. While I just counted straight, I feel like I didn't do to badly at 110 (maybe 111 by the end of the night). The shortest were the hour episodes of Trek which are 50 mins long. I found a new movie that I need for my collection. I found a few new ones that I don't. I think that's successful right there! Plus, I did finish the checklist at the final hour...

Thanks to shadokitty for hosting! I think you did a great job!

Re: 6th Annual Sci Fi/Fantasy Challenge

Indeed, LJG765 and I did finish our synced up tour through Star Trek. We got to the last episode after midnight my time, but just in time her time so I'm counting it! I'm impressed we managed to finish all 79 episodes given that we missed an entire week at one point due to both of us being away at different times.

I kept a running, entirely arbitrary, ranked list of the episodes as we watched them. You can view it in Google Docs here. Some of the rankings will look conspicuous, but this is a combination of objective quality and personal taste, including several guilty pleasures. You'll find "Spectre of the Gun" at #25/79, for instance. It's not a particularly great episode, but there's something about that I dig.

As she said, we're moving on to the animated series for this month's Animation Challenge. My plan all along has been to go back through the TOS era, from the original series through the animated series and onto all six movies starring the original cast. The plan is to do it all in airdate/release date order, and since "The Cage" first broadcast in 1988, I'm going back to that between Star Trek IV: The Voyage Home (1986) and Star Trek V: The Final Frontier (1989). Since none of those movies qualify for any challenges the rest of the year, I'm just planning to squeeze them in probably at various points in August but that's not carved in stone.

This year, my primary goal has been to go back through my library and watch anything that hasn't had at least one logged viewing in my DVD Profiler. For that reason, I didn't branch out much this year and see anything new, except for Despicable Me and the three Minions shorts, which I watched with a friend I visited, and Monsters University and Wreck-It Ralph, which I watched with my niece. The highlight by far for me was finally seeing Dr. No on the big screen, which I caught during my aforementioned visit with my friend.

Yesterday morning, I revisited My Super Ex-Girlfriend. I'll post that review in another post since it's lengthy and I've already written a novel here!

shadokitty did a terrific job as a first-timer and should be congratulated. I feel like the tweaks to the checklist this year were great improvements, even though I didn't even come close to completing it.

MY TOTALS

DVD: 10 movies, 79 episodes, 2 short films | Blu-ray Disc: 4 movies, 2 short films | Netflix Watch Instantly: 0 | Theatrical Exhibition: 1 movie | TV Broadcast: 0
iTunes Digital Download: 0 | Podcast/Streaming: 0 | HuluPlus: 0 | VHS: 0
First Time Viewing: 4 movies, 3 short films | Re-watches: 14 movies, 79 episodes, 2 short films
TOTAL: 18 movies, 79 episodes, 5 short films

TRADITIONAL COUNTING METHOD: 57.5 + 2 Wild Cards + 33m of Short Films

Re: 6th Annual Sci Fi/Fantasy Challenge

My Super Ex-Girlfriend, from my Letterboxd diary:

SPOILER ALERT FOR ANYONE READING EMAILS

Spoiler:
The pros of My Super Ex-Girlfriend are its premise and cast. The cons are pretty much everything else. Most of the characters are wholly unlikable, and if they weren't played by actors who have earned some goodwill with us over the years, the abhorrent nature of every character in the film would be even more glaring.

Despite being the superhero, G-Girl lacks any obviously redeeming traits. In a deleted scene shown on the DVD, it's Barry who explains to her that with her newfound powers, she's more or less obligated to become a superhero and help people, etc. She doesn't appear on board with that, but clearly winds up doing it anyway. I wish that scene had made the final cut, but I also understand why it had to go: It invites us to ask an important character question the film was hoping we wouldn't bring up: Just why is Jenny G-Girl?

Beneath the admitted novelty of actually playing with the question, "What if you dated - and then broke up with - a superhero?", My Super Ex-Girlfriend is misogynistic from start to finish. The personification of this is Rainn Wilson's character, Vaughn, who offends with every single line of dialog he speaks. The joke of course is supposed to be that he's a typical "man behaving badly", but that wears thin because no one in the film really calls him out for it. Matt (Luke Wilson) makes some comments at times, but they're always qualified by acceptance of Vaughn.

The greatest offender, of course, is Jenny herself. Initially, Uma Thurman plays her as somewhat awkward but sweet. After she cuts loose as a sexual hellcat, though, her behavior is so erratic that it conforms to only the basest paradigm of "the crazy girlfriend" trope. Going further, the supervillain Professor Bedlam is revealed to be Jenny's former bestie (and true love!) whom she callously dropped when she became popular, wounding him in the process. Jenny is therefore both incapable of having a healthy relationship with Matt (or presumably, anyone else), and she needs to be tamed by the fawning boy she cast aside in her youth.

Aside from its misogyny, My Super Ex-Girlfriend just isn't funny. The biggest gag in the film is the bit where G-Girl throws an actual shark into Hannah's (Anna Faris) apartment after finding Matt there in bed with her. Really? It's so over the top that it isn't even laughable. Instead, it goes into the realm of reinforcing the theme that all the conflict is centered around Jenny's instability. The film never strays from its "women are hysterical and crazy" premise.

One thing I did appreciate was how concisely G-Girl's origin is told. It's in one scene. I wish "real" superhero movies could do that and get on with things instead of spending an entire movie just to get us from Point A.1 to Point A.2, with Point B somewhere on the horizon for a sequel.

My Super Ex-Girlfriend was re-ranked on my Flickchart to #1410/1539

My Super Ex-Girlfriend
-X- 2000 (2006)
-X- PG-13 (For Sexual Content, Crude Humor, Language, and Brief Nudity.)
-X- Comic Book [Technically not based on a comic book, but I assume this can be interpreted as "Superhero" in general.]
-X- Comedy

Re: 6th Annual Sci Fi/Fantasy Challenge

I'm exhausted after this challenge! This was the first time I actually completed the checklist for this challenge and with the urging of folks in this thread, I saw some cool films I wouldn't have otherwise watched (The Wolfman legacy disc finally arrived at the library so I'll finish watching the classic monster films).

Thanks shadokitty for hosting this challenge, I think you did an awesome job and we'll try to behave ourselves over in the Animation Challenge thread until you return from vacation.

Re: 6th Annual Sci Fi/Fantasy Challenge

I finished up with some episodes of Torchwood. I got some really good first views in during this challenge: District 9, Children of Men, Aliens. Unfortunately, I didn't make it through the Matrix sequels, the remaining Alien films, or A Clockwork Orange as I planned. I was also hoping to finish the checklist, but ended up watching too much television.

Thanks to shadokitty, our awesome host, and to all the participants for also being generally awesome! Also, thanks to Ash Ketchem for giving me some great anime suggestions last year. I got a good start on several series that I will finish during the Animation Challenge.

Re: 6th Annual Sci Fi/Fantasy Challenge

I am so sorry to see this challenge end. Where has July gone? I think I enjoyed it more this year because, for the most part, I watched better movies than in years past. I didn't seem to hit as many clunkers as in previous years. I'm ready to go another month! Thanks for hosting a successful challenge, shadokitty.

Re: 6th Annual Sci Fi/Fantasy Challenge

Thanks for hosting shadokitty!

I came close on the checklist but didn't finish it due to wanting to watch from the "unopened" pile as much as possible. I'd planned to get it finished last Saturday but had a unscheduled family reunion of sorts sneak up and steal most of the day (no regrets as it was a very good day). After that I just didn't work up enough "want to do it" to get it finished.

With only a handful of exceptions everything I watched came from my unopened pile. A few titles were upgrades but the majority were first time viewings. Overall I'm pleased with what I was able to get in this month!

I'll continue with my SF viewing as I'm 5 episodes into Buck Rogers... and have found it quite fun so I want to finish the season. I doubt I'll be as heavy a participant in the animation challenge but I do have the entire Batman: The Animated Series I'd like to finally watch waiting in the wings so I'll at least attempt to get that one done... plus Who Framed Roger Rabbit that I've not seen since the original theatrical release and The Nightmare Before Christmas which I've never seen before. Then there's Superman: TAS V1, Popeye the Sailor V2, Magilla Gorilla, a couple of volumes of Pinky and the Brain (love the theme song), Chip and Dale: Rescue Rangers V1... Hmmm.... maybe I need to heavy up some...

Re: 6th Annual Sci Fi/Fantasy Challenge

Well I ended up watching more than I did last year. I watched every episode of this past season of Being Human (clearing up lots of DVR space) and I finally finished Buck Rogers in the 25th Century (which I'd started a few years back). I was afraid I wouldn't finish Buck Rogers, but I was in the right mood for it the last couple days of the month, so I was able to knock out a bunch of episodes in a short time. I'm thinking my self-imposed exile at the beginning of the month helped keep me from getting burnt out. I usually end up dropping out for a week or so during the month during most of the challenges anyway.

Thanks to shadokitty for running the challenge this year, and I hope things are looking up for you so you can do it again if Mr(whatever-his-name-is-now) doesn't reclaim it.

Re: 6th Annual Sci Fi/Fantasy Challenge

I had hoped to get it in before the end of July, but I didn't get to see THE WOLVERINE until last night, so it didn't make the Sci-Fi Challenge and because it's not animated, it doesn't make the August Challenge. Still, I was pleased with the high level of Japanese content in a Hollywood film (including a J-pop song from my CD collection used in the background in one scene) and the fact that it's the second mainstream Hollywood film to be released in July to have a Japanese leading lady. (It has two, in fact.) The other film was PACIFIC RIM.

Not a bad film, not a great film, but it has some interesting things in it.

Thanks to Shadokitty for running the challenge despite serious personal struggle, and to GoldenWheels for his awesome kindness to this forum and to everybody who participated.

I didn't get as high a number viewed as I did last year, mostly because this year I'm employed!
