Re: Summer Sci-Fi/Fantasy Challenge 10 - Discussion Thread

This is just a reminder/suggestion. I know people like to anticipate/plan their viewing for the month in these challenges ahead of time, but we don't usually pre-post our entire month's list before we actually watch anything. Sometimes life gets in the way and we don't get to watch what we planned.

I just figured he was a month ahead of everyone else. He's probably two weeks into the Animation challenge by now.

I put Percy Jackson at the top of my queue, but it's not available till 7/27. (shakes fist at Netflix rental window)

Or maybe he's in a time warp.

No one will be seated during the exciting bacon lighting scene.

I don't have too many films that fit this challenge, but I do have a question. Say I used the checklist from the 1st page. Can each film only count once, or does can it count multiple times?

i.e. Alien.....would it count for 1) movie from the 1970's 2) featuring Sigourney Weaver 3) won Oscar 4) watch said film and sequels 5) takes place in space 6) rated R

As few or as many as you want.

Some people are taking it as an extra challenge to not duplicate as much as possible.

Man, I love the beacon scene and thought I'd get some agreement instead of cheap jokes

Starship Troopers

I can't believe I've never got around to watching Starship Troopers before now. What can I say, Paul Verhoeven is the man. I mean I have always been a huge Verhoeven fan, but for some reason I never got around to checking out this movie. I'm not even sure how to characterize this movie, it's a bit tongue-in-cheek at time, but I guess I would say it's a great "sci-fi romp."

I can't wait to listen to all 3 commentaries

Any objections to Zombieland counting, since it's a post apocalypse movie?

Congrats! And great term there, "sci-fi romp".

Wow, sci-fi isn't listed? Doesn't matter, that SO counts!

Re: Summer Sci-Fi/Fantasy Challenge 10 - Discussion Thread

What can I say, a pretty incredible first 11 days for me. We had last Monday and Tuesday off, so I decided to take the whole week off of work and have managed 35.25 titles so far. That number will diminish greatly since I won't be taking any vacation for the rest of the month, but it has been a blast up until this point. I still think I can get to my goal of 62, but it will be tough.

I think I'm going to have to regulate myself to TV shows and mini-series during the weekdays, because it seems like I can only find 1-2 hours after work have time to watch anything. That doesn't lend itself too well to an actual movie.

Sci-Fi is my favorite genre, so even the most mediocre sci-fi movies I undoubtedly enjoy. Since I have about half of my watching in the books, I'll run down some of what I watched.

Enjoyable first time viewings:
Knowing
Next
Ghost Town
Impostor
The Island
Sunshine
Starship Troopers

Some titles I have seen but now have a better appreciation for:
The Fountain
2001: A Space Odyssey (A few of the segways are crazy long, but it was an amazing viewing experience on blu-ray - I think the only other time I saw it was on VHS :cringe: )

Old favorites:
The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy
Final Fantasy: The Spirits Within
Star Trek VI: The Undiscovered Country

Star Trek: First Contact
The Lost Room -> HIGHLY suggest if you haven't seen this mini-series

As a side note, I watched The Chronicles of Riddick: Dark Fury (1st time) and The Chronicles of Riddick (2nd time) and the movie was better than I remembered it being. I'm interested to see what they are going to do with the 3rd movie (they are currently shopping it around Hollywood.)

I also thought Star Trek: Nemesis was better than I remember in the theater, but still a pretty big disappointment.

Can anyone tell me if Sweeny Todd would count as fantasy? It's cool if it doesn't I just made the mistake of taking my girlfriend with me to blockbuster and she insisted that we rent it.

I can't recall any fantasy elements (horror or historical definitely).

I was looking through my Criterions to see if there were any challenge candidates beyond the usual suspects- The Blob, Fiend Without a Face or the Monsters and Madmen set-and it occurred to me that Last Year At Marienbad would almost kinda sorta qualify. It's a highly stylized, surreal drama dealing with alternate realities or selective memories of two people wandering around a chateau in in a dreamlike existence independent of linear time and space. Would that be acceptable as a wild card option?

There's a huge list 20 or so posts back.

Edit to add: post 248, thanks gfoots!

And sounds close enough to a wildcard for me. This was the one Criterion that I've started and not finished incidentally. Need to try again someday.

The Discreet Charm of the Bourgeoisie is missing from the list.

I'm back from my vacation. Didn't get to watch as much as I was hoping to while I was gone, but I did get to screen a couple of episodes of Doctor Who on the plane, as well as sitting down with my brother and watching Orgasmo for the first time. I'm only here for two days until I take off for the SF Silent Film Festival. I'll have to play catch up.

Watched The Road last night... and then spent 100 bucks at Amazon on survival equipment today.

Sounds like you're about to catch up quickly
