Challenge Starts July 1st at 12am EST

Challenge ends August 1st at dawn

Rules

Movies/TV shows should be labeled sci-fi or fantasy from either imdb.com or allmovie.com. Other labels don't matter as long as there is at least a sci-fi or fantasy label from one of those sites. Action/Sci-fi would be fine.

If anyone has a problem with something someone watches or just wants an opinion on if it's sci-fi or fantasy or not, ask here.

Sci-Fi/Fantasy documentaries are allowed but not DVD featurettes/interviews.

As with the other challenges, the lists must be numbered or it won't count.

Movies count as 1 entry each.

TV shows count according to length as they are aired on TV(including commercials):
  • 30 minute shows count as 1/4 an entry
  • 1 hour shows count as 1/2 an entry
  • 2 hour shows count as 1 entry
So you need 4, 30 minute shows for 1 entry or 2 60 minute shows or any combination that gets you to 1 entry. While X-Files has a runtime of around 43 minutes, on-air it's an hour show.

If it's short films that are 10 minutes or less, once you hit 23 minutes of watching them, you've reached one 30 minute show. This is based on the theory that the run time for a 30 minute show is between 22-24 minutes.

For mini series, do count each "day" that it aired (assuming that each day was a 2 hour block). For example, Dune: The Mini Series, would it be:

63. Dune: The Mini Series - Part I
64. Dune: The Mini Series - Part II
65. Dune: The Mini Seriies - Part III

When listing TV shows, keep them together for one entry.
Example:
65. Outer Limits:episode name / Futurama: episode name / Futurama: episode name
How do I list TV shows and other short stuff if I don't have enough for an entry?

At the bottom of your post/list, keep a Temp TV section. Add stuff there until you get enough for an entry.

Watching the movie with the commentary will count as an entry.

Watching multiple versions(theatrical and director's cut) of the same movie will also count.

Show what days you watched whatever it was you watched

Example

July 1:
1. Alien
2. Aliens

July 2:
3. Aliens 3
How to win

I'm stealing the prize determination from the exploitation challenge. Names will be randomly selected from http://www.random.org/lists/ The top 6 people, one prize per person, get something.

There's 4 ways to get an entry:
  1. Participate by watching at least 1 item
  2. Watch 100 items
  3. Start the checklist
  4. Complete the checklist

The List Thread will be a week before the challenge begins.

Last year's discussion thread: http://forum.dvdtalk.com/dvd-talk/55...on-thread.html
Last year's list thread: http://forum.dvdtalk.com/dvd-talk/55...st-thread.html

3 wild cards for all. Use for those shows you want to watch but know they really don't count but they're pretty close or borderline to counting.

So what kind of checklist do you guys want to do? Something simple like the horror challenge or more in depth like the exploitation challenge? If we do that latter, I'm fine with adding checklist wild cards.

As far as the Fantasy genre goes, does Nightmare on Elm St. count? If it's a borderline choice, I can always use it as one of my wildcards. The only other fantasy-type films I plan on watching are a few Harryhausens, The 5000 Fingers of Dr. T and The Boy with the Green Hair. Would anyone object to those?

I still have a couple of stacks of TV DVDs I was watching last July on the sofa table (I have moved them a time or two to dust around them), so I'll just pick up wherever I left off last year.

I'm glad to hear fantasy will be included this year.

I couldn't care less what you do with the checklist; I never use 'em. :)

The horror checklist is simple? Well, I guess it is compared to exploitation. I prefer simple most days, but reserve the right to help create entire new categories for them.

I'm the same. I like the idea but I've only followed through with doing them twice in the last few years. I'm lazy like that.

I wouldn't count Nightmare but the others are fine, as far as I can see. I think it strays too far away from fantasy. That's my opinion. If you wanted to use a wild card for it, I wouldn't complain.

Most look like they do. Josie And The Pussycats doesn't. The easiest way is to check imdb.com or allmovie.com for a fantasy or sci-fi genre tag.

I had a good time cruising through TNG/DS9 last year, and also had a chance to knock off Earth2 and The Prisoner from my unwatched list. Not sure what I'll do for this year, maybe some Buffy/Angel or perhaps Farscape.

I can see how the movie wouldn't fit at all, but have you seen the tv show? It's mosly Sci-Fi even before the Outer Space episodes.

They encounter aliens and evil scientists and unlike Scooby Doo, they are real (within the context of the story) and not ordinary people pretending to be monsters to scare off snoopers.

It's been around 30 years since I watched the show. Sounds like it counts.

I'm building up the 2nd post to list online movies/shows as well as any TV specials. If there's anything to add, let me know.

So you just go through those criteria and see how many you can get?

Pretty much. The first time I did a challenge was with the horror one. On that one I tried watching as much as possible for a high number and got horribly . Now I just try to watch enjoyable things at an enjoyable pace that just happen to all be things from the science fiction or fantasy genres.

To put it simply, find all the science fiction or fantasy stuff you want to watch and go nuts.

I think that one year everyone went overboard. We even had the challenge shut down a few times. They are much calmer now.
