Re: Summer Sci-Fi/Fantasy Challenge 10 - Discussion Thread
I just watched TimeCrimes for the first time. I have to say I enjoyed it quite a bit for a time travel movie. None of the normal loopholes that you tend to find with such films. It's a great watch for anyone looking to fill that watch a movie in another language checklist item.
EDIT: On that same subject, I've never seen Run Lola Run. Imdb lists it as crime/thriller. I was under the impression that it's a time travel type movie which would fit the sci fi criteria but seeing as I've never seen it I really don't know. I'm sorry I keep asking if certain movies fit the criteria on here but I'm really looking for a lot of first time viewings and I'm not sure on some of them.

Time travel isn't the first things I would associate with Run Lola Run but I can see how it may fit in that category. There is definitely a repetition of events whose origins are never explained except to say that they did happen. It could be due to time travel, dreams, hallucinations. As a viewer you can make up your own theories. So I guess if you want to include it, then go for it.

I finished Space: Above and Beyond. A second tier sci-fi show for me. The final two episodes were really good though. Now I'm gonna start Buck Rogers in the 25th Century. Gotta watch these sci-fi shows that I have on DVD and have never seen.
I wanna thank Full Moon, Mill Creek and HamiltonBook.com for the prizes! That's very cool of them.

As far as Criterion options, The Red Shoes and Tales of Hoffman should count as Fantasy titles, and Atomic Submarine and First Man Into Space are Sci-fi.

Thanks. I added those to the list I posted earlier. I never was a huge Criterion collector and I haven't kept up with their releases over the last couple of years, but I see some recent things I wish I was rich enough to buy. For instance, Crumb and My Dinner with Andre.

I'm on vacation and out of the country for ten days starting Friday, so it'll be tough for me to crack 100 this year. I'll bring my portable DVD player though, so I'll be able to watch two or three during the week.

Me either. I went through my collection and found all my Criterions, am making a list for the wallet as we speak, and will lose several hundred dollars this month to my possibly fruitless quest to own them all.
I'm starting with finishing off their sci-fi/fantasy titles, thanks for the list/updates all.

And now back to our regularly scheduled programming...
July 7, 2010
20) Star Trek V - The Final Frontier - I always figured that heaven would be full of green grass and harps and stuff, not a bloody desert. The best way I can describe it is as a serviceable film with some good camaraderie between old friends.
21) Star Trek VI - The Undiscovered Country - If V could be called a similar if inferior film to I, then VI can be called a similar if inferior film to II. Bringing back Klingons to be the main antagonist is almost always a good choice. A fitting send-off for a beloved ship and crew.

22) Star Trek VII - Generations - For better or worse, this is a strictly transitional film between TOS and TNG. Finally seeing James Tiberius Kirk and Jean-Luc Picard together made the movie for me. A fanboy's dream right there.
23) Star Trek VIII - First Contact - Finally, the best Star Trek movie out there. A good story, good action, a great antagonist and some classic lines. Hell, the line must be drawn somewhere.
24) Star Trek IX - Insurrection - Dang it, why can't we have two good movies in a row anymore? How far have we gone from the needs of the many outweighing the needs of the few or the one... tsk tsk.
25) Star Trek X - Nemesis - Just one question: When has a story involving a clone been truly great? (And yes, Selene is a masterpiece) I can only think of a couple myself, and this one is not it. And the deux ex machina with Data Jr... just embarrassing to end the TNG stories with this debacle. Maybe everyone can get back together and pull An Undiscovered Country out of somewhere.

I have a quick question. Does Tron qualify for an animated film for the checklist?

Funny thing is I remember seeing previews for it when it first came out and both my friend and I ripping on it calling it a poor mans star wars. I had never been a Whedon follower and didn't know anything about it. I still can't remember why I first saw it but boy did I fall in love. Of course outside of this and firefly I've yet to really see anything else he's done.

Love Serenity. Saw it in theaters before I ever saw Firefly. Went back and saw Firefly twice through, but have seen Serenity many more times than that.
I haven't seen Buffy, but I have seen Dr. Horrible and Dollhouse.

Just watched the pilot of Defying Gravity, which was interesting but didn't knock me out. I've seen it on a few of your lists--is it worth sticking with?

Is there any streaming sites that has Colossus of New York? I've been wanting to see that movie FOREVER.

Yes, there are, but I don't want to link to them. If you like STAGE and screen, you might experience a sense of deja VU when you watch great old sci-fi from the 50s. I'm sure that you will find a helpful DOT COM, if you search carefully.

One of my all time favorites. It took about 2 years of nagging from a friend of mine to finally watch Firefly. I am so very happy that they were able to make Serenity.
