I don't think it's them pulling it as much as it is people "losing" discs.

It's so rarely even talked about, but everyone that I talk to about it seem to love it. It's $9.99 on blu-ray right now and that's a steal!

Well, that's silly. It's in print, so BUY it. I did. There's no excuse for taking movies that you didn't pay for if they are available in the marketplace. If something is OOP, however, or not available in R1, well, you know, the Internet, like a woman's heart, is a deep ocean of secrets.

That's what I liked about my former Hollywood Video Store. People renting didn't take OOP stuff that'd fetch a decent price on the Internet, like 1984.

I had something similar happen. I managed to get the first disc of Meerkat Manor before the rest went away. At least they have it up on streaming.

I'll throw out a few recommendations:
'Breaker' Morant
Becket
Paths of Glory

All available for streaming through Netflix

Becket is fantastic - O'Toole and Burton have some great speeches. O'Toole in particular has a couple of hilarious, seething monologues in which he absolutely eviscerates his wife, kids and mother-in-law!

Yeah I was thinking of checking out Becket. But, for some reason, watching 2-hour movies from the computer isn't all that comfy for me (It's gotta be this chair) They also have a bunch of Kurosawa titles on instant, for those interested.

One thing that I've been relying on for this challenge is to seek out WWII films from the Russian side. Ivan's Childhood was a little too artsy-from-Tarkovsky for me, but Come and See was a great rebound. The last half hour of that was simply astonishing.

I've got some bad news for you: Becket is actually 148 minutes.

Both Kelly's Heroes and Eagles Dare are on my to-watch list, but now I might wait and pick up the BD

^ I read somewhere that the HiDef transfer of 'Where Eagles Dare' is a tad too dark at times.

Re: June 2010 History Film Challenge Discussion Thread

what do you think about the Book of Eli fitting into any of the categories for the challenge?
I've been hit hard this month with a few releases that doesn't fit into the challenge category that has cut back on my score so far. The Wolfman for one, which i know won't work. But how about Book of Eli?

I was hoping it'd count as a Western, but there was previous conversation about Firefly and other titles that made me figure no.

Isn't that a post-apocalyptic action film set in the 2040s? As far as I know, we're not there yet, so I doubt it. It will count next month in the Sci Fi challenge.

Re: June 2010 History Film Challenge Discussion Thread

I am planning to watch WITCHFINDER GENERAL as part of the challenge. I have never watched it as part of the horror challenge because I don't consider it a horror film. Then I started thinking about all of the historical films that feature Vincent Price (BARON OF ARIZONA, TEN COMMANDMENTS, BRIGHAM YOUNG, TOWER OF LONDON, 3 MUSKETEERS, etc) and realized: Wow! there are an awful lot of Price films that wouldn't fit the Horror Challenge that could be watched as part of the History Challenge. So I started to make a new category at the end of my checklist called "The Vincent Price Historical Film Festival" and I'll be sub-listing those films as part of my list. I know I won't be able to get to all of them this year (I'll save some for next), but I think its a fun way to recognize one of my favorite actors. Vincent Price: He's not just for October anymore!

Price is one of my favorites also. He runs either 1 or 2 with Eastwood on my list. Vincent has done so many great things and i have a lot of his movies on DVD that I will never give up on. The Haunted Palace for one is my favorite of his works.

Not video watching, but I just read Jonah Hex: Six Gun Mojo and Jonah Hex: No Way Back. Western Month continues.

Re: June 2010 History Film Challenge Discussion Thread

My current goal for this challenge is to finish the History list at icheckmovies. Only 18 to go. I have 9 coming from Netflix and I have all the others or they can be streamed from Netflix. Don't see why I shouldn't be able to pull off 18 movies in 13 days.

I watched Schindler's List for the first time last night. It's a shame I waited 17 years to see it. What a powerful and humbling movie.

I've barely watched anything the last few days - it's just too hot to stay inside watching movies. I've found my concentration level drops significantly as the temperature rises. I'd better get my AC set up in time for the Sci-Fi Challenge!

I agree, although I have a ton of movies to watch for the challenge, the real challenge is actually watching them when it's 80-90 degrees and sunny outside.
the horror challenge is great because of the weather it turns dark and gloomy for the most part, depending where you are of course, but it's much easier to watch movies in October than June because I want to be outside more.
