Man, I have so many Westerns and war films on my list and we're almost at the end of the month. Keep waiting for my schedule to clear up but I better get crackin'....

Can I get a ruling on The Cove? I haven't seen it yet, but from what I've heard, it's not a typical "nature" documentary. Would I be able to count this for the challenge?

Can I get a ruling as well? Would you guys count Il Caimano? I watched it already but don't know if to count it of not as I thought it would be more about Belrlusconi

Oh, and just a reminder. Wild Cards in this challenge are kind of specialized. Unlike other challenges, they aren't a catchall. They are for Iconic films that reflect their decade, like Rebel Without a Cause or Saturday Night Fever. Movies that make you think of the time they were made before you even think of the plot.

I'm trying to come up with something. I'll cheat and say that Buster Keaton is iconic enough by himself to count this as a Wild Card, at least. Chaplin and Lloyd are probably enough, too. Those names instantly say 1910s and 20s cinema.

In 1991, Sherlock, Jr. was selected for preservation in the United States National Film Registry by the Library of Congress as being "culturally, historically, or aesthetically significant"

That's as good an argument as any for me. Maybe this should be part of the acceptance rules for next year's challenge: any film selected for the US National Film Registry is acceptable.

That doesn't work into the categories, though. We have a simple theme with a pretty wide berth of allowed films.

Well I guess i'm going to miss out on a couple of entries that I ordered from Amazon which may not get to me in time for the end of the challenge. Warlord (Jet Li ) and Red Dawn ( Swayze).
I watched the 300 Spartans a few days ago, not the latest one " 300" this one was from 1961.
If anyone liked "300" you may be interested in this. A lot of people don't even know about this older movie because it's not a mainstream thing. But it's worth checking out if you haven't seen it yet.

The Cowboys - Popped this in again to watch it with the director commentary, and all of the special features. I was sort of meh about John Wayne before this month, but now think very highly of him as an actor. This film grew on me as well. Took me awhile to get over what seemed like the silly notion of those kids handling the job. But once I got over that, figuring that it probably did happen like that back in that day, I really loved the film. Some excellent performances, particularly Bruce Dern.

I'm starting my 4th of July weekend early so it looks like I'm done with this challenge. I'll be away from computers and DVD players until next week. I had a great time watching what I did. I didn't come too close to my original goal of 50 (I did 37) but I did get through all of the box sets that I wanted to so I'm not disappointed.
It was really interesting watching westerns directed by John Ford, Anthony Mann, and Samuel Fuller, most of them made in a fairly brief period from the late 40's to the mid 50's, and seeing the different approaches used by each one. I look forward to continuing this next time and also throwing some Randolph Scott/Budd Boetticher into the mix.
I enjoyed scanning everyone's lists and found some movies I really want to see for next time. In particular thanks to Joe29 for talking about Geronimo - An American Legend and War Arrow, ororama for mentioning Ugetsu and Shansho the Bailiff, and Gobear for bringing up Agora. For my part, I'd recommend Pork Chop Hill, Les Miserables (1934 Bernard version), Winchester '73 and The Searchers for folks to try out.
And thanks to MinLShaw for getting things started and caligulathegod for running the challenge.
I hope everyone has a really good 4th of July.

Inglorious Basterds was a really nice change of pace considering what I've been watching. Pan's Labyrinth was also much better than I was expecting.
Now I have 20 minutes left of yet another French WWII movie and the last hour of The Great Dictator before switching gears for the next challenge.

Combination of it being too hot to leave the house this month (I need to move north) and lots of really short films let me pass 100 today. I'm quitting after watching this one last Roy Rogers flick, Under California Stars, and then getting stuff ready for the July Sci-Fi Challenge which I'll start at midnight with Gojira.

I had planned to mix in a lot of sports flicks in the early going, but I soon got sucked into the drama of many war/historical films. This ended up being a pretty moving marathon for me.

Countries visited: 17
Apperances by U.S. Presidents: 7 (Lincoln 2x)
And as is my tradition when it comes to these challenges, another compilation wrap-up from me....But I wanted to simplify it with pics instead of clips. Like I said, this was a strong challenge.

I really enjoyed the Historical Challenge. I had a lot of titles that I didn't have a chance to get to. But it was fun to watch the ones that I could watch, I have time to sneak in one more before the end so I better get to it.

Had a great time with the challenge. Didn't get in some movies that I had wanted to, but overall I'm happy with the movies I watched.
Re-watched The Proposition today! What a friggin fantastic movie!
I will say that I was disappointed in Kingdom of Heaven though. Very long and dull.

Thanks for participating. I didn't get to nearly anything I wanted to watch. Real life interfered a bit too much this time. I'll tally up the lists and post results in a few days.
Anyway, thanks, all. Thall.

I didn't watch nearly as much stuff as I had planned to, thanks to being gone most of the month, but happy that every single thing on my list was first time viewing for me. Also watched my very first western, and a few western tv episodes. Probably not anywhere near my favorite genre, but got into them more then I expected.

Possibly my favorite film of the Challenge, and a top ten of all-time for me. Will have to watch it a second time to be sure, but it was amazing first-time viewing.
Really? I'm guessing you're our youngest Challenge participant.
That was ixnayed iirc. But I'm going to try to watch "Historical Sci-Fi" films that day, if I can figure anything out.
