Unwatched Movie Pile: January 10 - Let's try this again
What Is This? Where Am I?
Spun off from an idea I had in the Unwatched DVD Pile thread, I decided to let everyone keep track of how they are coming along with their unwatched stuff along with seeing how everyone else is doing compared to you.
It may shock you to see how much you buy compared to how much you watch.
How Do I Start My Own List?
Here's a template. You'll have to remove the space before the 'b' for it to work right.
There are 5 different sections for your post.
Section one will be how many movies you have to watch at the beginning of the month. This won't get updated.
Section two will be your list of movies as you watch them. Update as you watch.
Section three will be for the bad, bad man who forces you to buy new movies even though you can't finish what you have. You could either to a count and change it as you get it, or impress us all with a list instead so we can see that you bought the new Power Rangers movie.
Section four will be your monthly net change. It'll be zero at the first first of each month. It works like this, let's say you watch 3 movies, it just became -3. The next day there's a 20% off sale at DDD, add 40 more so now it's +37.
Section five is your total net change. This one will carry over from the previous month or if you are just starting out, it will be zero. As you watch or buy movies, you will adjust this as well as the monthly net change.
Total Net Change is confusing. Why did you do that and a monthly one?
After the first month, my net for the month was +59. I didn't want to start off a new month with such a high number so I made it so you track both. At least that way I could be even for something and not feel like such a loser.
How Do I Count TV sets or double feature DVDs?
You count them how you would normally count them. It's up for you to decide how you want to do it.
What If I Watch Stuff As I Buy? Can I Still Join?
There's no problem if you want to keep track of what you do.

I meant caught up as in listing what I watch in these monthly threads. I think I've left them blank since September.
But no, I've never come close to catching up. I have at least 1,000 unwatched films (1,500 unwatched DVDs) and a couple hundred unwatched TV seasons. I'll never catch up. But I'm content to average watching one per day, and hopefully buying less than that.

I'd say I'm slowing down on getting new stuff, exception being the Target blu-ray coupon. We'll see how it turns out this month. There's be less than 5 months out of the almost 3 years I've been keeping track where I've watched more than I've acquired. 2 of them were because of Halloween challenges and I remember one other month where I came out ahead.

I'd say I'm slowing down on getting new stuff, exception being the Target blu-ray coupon. We'll see how it turns out this month. I'd say I'm slowing down on getting new stuff, exception being the Target blu-ray coupon. We'll see how it turns out this month. There's be less than 5 months out of the almost 3 years I've been keeping track where I've watched more than I've acquired. 2 of them were because of Halloween challenges and I remember one other month where I came out ahead.
But due to space issues, and the desire to someday have everything listed as 'watched', I think this will be the year where I make major changes and progress.
What do you label unwatched exactly, btw? Right now, I'm just concentrating on watching never before seen titles, and considering unopened DVDs of titles I saw in the theater as 'watched'. I guess that makes me a cheater.....

Love that you can pull that number up. I really need to get my stuff in a database. I was close to having everything in DVDSpot when it shut down, and now I'm too paranoid to enter all the data again. But hopefully I'll do something this year. You like the system you use?

I like the software I use but I stayed with the older version that pulls info from Amazon, DVD Empire, and IMDB. The newer one goes off of their own database. For the most part their db is fine, except I get a bunch of stuff that isn't on DVD and won't show up in their online db. Some of it does though, and that puts it ahead of online DVD collections that only do DVD.
Ideally I'd have to make my own that pulls from the sites I like but I haven't done much with that kind of programming.
For counting, I just count by movie only. I don't worry about special features and stuff. For the most part, I don't even look at them but Something Weird usually has some decent stuff in terms of extras.
Even if I watched a movie in the theater, I count the movie as unwatched. Mostly as a way of checking for any problems with the disc. Of course by the time I usually get around to it, there's no way to exchange it or it's even gone long out of print by then.
Thanks largely to you (for the Criterion challenge) and Mister Peepers, I'm finally caught up after having been in these things since (before) Mister Peepers started the monthly threads. Its odd but good wanting to watch a DVD and feeling like I can just watch whatever I like, after being kind of compulsive about always watching something new for a long time. Anyway, thanks you guys, I hope I always keep up from now on, or I'll be back to get back on track .
.I remember 10 years ago when I would watch a movie shortly after buying it.
