Unwatched Movie Pile: September 07

What Is This? Where Am I?

Spun off from an idea I had in the Unwatched DVD Pile thread, I decided to let everyone keep track of how they are coming along with their unwatched stuff along with seeing how everyone else is doing compared to you.

It may shock you to see how much you buy compared to how much you watch.

How Do I Start My Own List?

There are 5 different sections for your post.

Section one will be how many movies you have to watch at the beginning of the month. This won't get updated.

Section two will be your list of movies as you watch them. Update as you watch.

Section three will be for the bad, bad man who forces you to buy new movies even though you can't finish what you have. You could either to a count and change it as you get it, or impress us all with a list instead so we can see that you bought the new Power Rangers movie.

Section four will be your monthly net change. It'll be zero at the first first of each month. It works like this, let's say you watch 3 movies, it just became -3. The next day there's a 20% off sale at DDD, add 40 more so now it's +37.

Section five is your total net change. This one will carry over from the previous month or if you are just starting out, it will be zero. As you watch or buy movies, you will adjust this as well as the monthly net change.

Total Net Change is confusing. Why did you do that and a monthly one?

After the first month, my net for the month was +59. I didn't want to start off a new month with such a high number so I made it so you track both. At least that way I could be even for something and not feel like such a loser.

How Do I Count TV sets or double feature DVDs?

You count them how you would normally count them. It's up for you to decide how you want to do it.

What If I Watch Stuff As I Buy? Can I Still Join?

There's no problem if you want to keep track of what you do.

I caved on the 29th, and bought 16 DVDs between Wal-Mart, Blockbuster, and Hollywood Video. I'm still 20 below the amount that I started with though, so that's an accomplishment in my book.

This is sad--a couple weekends ago I sorted DVDPro by 'run time" to pick one of the shortest things to watch, just so I could check something off. Turned out to pick Galaxy Quest, which I had seen before as a rental but it had been a while; enjoyed it again.

I hit a movie like that. I'd guess about 15 years ago I rented some 70s horror movie from Hollywood Video or Blockbuster. I remember looking for it maybe a year later but couldn't remember which place I rented it, nor could I remember the name or what the case looked like.

I few months back, one of the movies I started to watch was that same one. I figured I've owned it for about 2 years before finally watching it and I had no idea it was the same movie when I got it.

And don't ask me the name now because I still don't remember, but I think it starts with a 'B'.

A little disappointed to fall behind by such a large amount, guess I hang around the bargains forum a bit too much. I do feel good that I've spent much of my viewing time on some box sets, finishing 3 tv show seasons and the Cardinals 2006 World Series collection. I'm confident I'll make up some ground next month, especially trying to tackle the Horror Movie Challenge.

I was just curious, are people counting just the movies they've never seen or just each dvd until they watch the disc, whether they had seen the movie before or not? I'm only counting completely unwatched movies myself. If was counting every disc I had bought but hadn't gotten around to watching, I'd probably have another couple hundred to my list. Oy vey. I was just curious how others wre going about it.

I count DVDs I haven't watched (even if I've already seen the movie/show) since I joined DVDSpot last July, when I started tracking my watched DVDs.

I'm counting each dvd in my collection I haven't seen, regardless if I've seen the movie/show before or not. If it was a movie/show I have seen before, and bought the DVD--until I watch that DVD it's sort of 'wasted money'.
Some of the collection is stuff for my wife or boy that I have absolutely no interest in, and didn't buy, so I'm not going for 0 unwatched necessarily.
Out of the 184 unwatched titles, about 36 I've seen before, the rest I've either not seen at all, or have only seen part of (tv series, multimovie sets).

I go by the disc since I can also check if the disc is bad.

I'm guessing most people are going by unwatched discs, although I suppose you can do it however you prefer.

I think the point of the thread is to monitor how much money we're spending on DVDs versus how much time we invest in actually watching them.

When I finally get around to doing this....

My plan is to count the DVDs that I haven't watched that I really want to watch.

For instance, I will not be listing Austin Powers in Goldmember because it was on cable every freakin' day for a while. I like the movie, but I have ZERO interest in watching the DVD any time in the near future.

My biggest crutch will be TV sets. It will probably take me forever just to get through one season of any given show. I just have to keep telling myself that the list won't go down overnight... unless I dream an entire movie!

Exactly. If I spent money on it, regardless of whether I've seen it before or not, it is unwatched until I pop it into the drive to view it. The only exception I make is a rare occurrence where I borrow a disc and like it so much I immediately go out and buy it. Obviously I'm not going to view it again so quick. So it is more like I bought and watched it already.
