Here's my subset pick, assuming there are still some open spaces:

Prince of Darkness

One of the most underrated horror films, IMO. Many should own this, and those who don't can find it for

I'm thinking of just doing a little write up on how if you have netflix and an xbox gold membership, you can do a netflix party where a group of people can go online to watch a movie together with voice chat(assuming there's a microphone).

Include the DVDTalkHorror gamertag they'd send a friend request to and also post or PM their gamertag to me so I know that the friend request is a participant of the challenge and not just someone that sent it by mistake.

I would love to do it. But I really can't be certain of my days as far as studies and other College activities go. I am going to participate in the challenge as usual though. This is my last year at College so I can pick a movie for next year if you need me.- Thanks.

Done. It's on the bottom of the first post underneath the Facebook group link.

Let me know if any additional info needs to be added.

Re: 100 Movies. 31 Days. The 5th Annual "October Horror Movie Challenge" (10/1 - 10/3

Chad, here's a better writeup.

SEND A FRIEND REQUEST TO DVDTalkHorror to join the parties

Feel free to host a party whenever you want. If you're watching something check the DVDTalkHorror friend's list and invite people!

Just go to Friends -> DVDTalkHorror -> Personal Profile -> View Friends. And then you can just invite whoever is online on that list into a party.

Recently, Microsoft updated the Netflix player on the 360. Among the changes is the addition called 'Netflix Parties.' Basically someone is a host and invites people to watch a movie together. Everyone watches it at the same time, and we can communicate w/ voice during the movie.

You need an Xbox 360, a gold account, and a Netflix subscription. There's only one catch: For right now, Starz Play and Disney movies are not allowed to be used for parties.

We can use this thread to pick out movies and times to watch them. We can try to vary things up.

While we can watch classics or stuff we've all seen, I think it would be interesting to check out stuff that the entire group may not have watched. We could even take a gamble and watch god knows what. I think even some riffing on intentionally bad movies could be good for a laugh if done sparingly.

I feel kind of silly asking this, but is this pretty much the only way for people to have virtual viewing parties?

It was good, not great, but worth a watch. You should definitely cringe a bit especially if you're a man.

You could do it with speaker phone, skype with microphones, or IM. For the movie you could all have copies and hit play at the same time. The other option would be to stream it at the same time through netflix, hulu, joost, etc and hope nobody hits a buff that gets them out of sync with everyone else.

I've done it in the past on speakerphone and a vcr. Then you find out that they all play tapes at different speeds when you can the movie in the background. Mine started out just a little behind but by the end of the movie his was a little behind.

I also hated Walkmans for the same reason since most of them always played just a little bit slower than they were supposed to and it would drive me crazy.

Unless there's any objections, I was planning on posting the list thread a little earlier than usual. I'd say sometime within the next 2 or 3 days.

is it going to get sticky-ed for the month? I just ordered the cables I needed to get set up so I should be able to get started. I haven't watched a dvd since June of last year (2008) so I'm looking forward to spining my first dvd in over a year and to do it in my first year participating. I'm excited. shooting for 20 for the month, with mostly 3-4 per weekend.

Yes. We've had sticky status for the last couple of challenges.

And I'll throw out another Subset pick: An American Werewolf in London. The new release being out seems like a damn good excuse to revisit it.

That leaves, what, 8 films to go? Keep 'em coming...

Oh, so you do want me to buy it before it goes on sale. I personally think that the remainder of the subset picks would be great to follow this lead. There are plenty of horror releases that people have waited a long time to hit DVD and BD coming up that might fit the bill nicely, and I'm sure people will enjoy the chance to revisit old faves AND be able to use them to participate.

Some other examples:
Trick 'r Treat (everyone is looking forward to it)
Stepfather 1 and 2
Phantasm II
Misery
Wrong Turn
Deadgirl
Night of the Creeps (I know it was mentioned...but I think a LOT of people are getting it, and it would be a great one to include).

Re: 100 Movies. 31 Days. The 5th Annual "October Horror Movie Challenge" (10/1 - 10/3

What theater releases are horror themed between now and 10/30?

What if we made one or two of them picks for the subset, with the understanding that many might not watch them that exact day?

Perhaps a Sunday would work best for those, as more probably go to theaters on the weekends. And later in the month, giving more people time to get to them.

and a midnight showing of 'Creature from the Black Lagoon' in 3D down at Landmark E Street here in DC - woohoo!

^Yeah. Other than the Stepfather remake (#3!?) and a few limited releases, I think that's pretty much it.

My vote easily goes to Zombieland.

If that film actually lives up to all the hype, it could very well replace or at least share the throne of 'Halloween' as that holiday's preferred viewing for many. I know I'm looking forward to it.

Something that might be interesting is to put the Dawn of the Dead remake in the mix (perhaps back-to-back with the original.) I watched them both for the first time last year and I really enjoyed the remake. I hope this isn't blasphemous talk with original DotD lovers!

Sounds fair to me, especially since we're getting to crunch time. We should probably wrap this up in the next day or two so people have time to plan/shop.

A few of the choices I was only 99% sure of which version the chooser meant, so double check my years/links please.

Nice layout.

Added the obligatory link to that post in the rules table. I also went ahead and added what you have so far to post #2 and will update as you do. Of course I'll include it in the list thread when posted.

And how about going with indiephantom's recommendation of Trick 'r Treat? We could even add it on the 30th and have a back-to-back Halloween-themed two-fer.

I should admit that I steal all my table ideas from other tables here on DVDTalk. Quote, cut and paste, edit.......

Done on the Trick 'r Treat. Maybe I shouldn't admit this, but I have no memory of that film. Did it come out last year?

it should've come out nearly 2 years ago...it was shelved. you may remember the trailer at the beginning of the 300 dvd.

Ah, I think I do! Cool. Hopefully.

Ok, on the second possible theater viewing, what do you all think? I refuse to participate in another Saw film, so can we choose another? Or not if none look that strong.

Still have a few openings, so fire away any suggestions. Try to stick to mainstream films i think, just to get more people potentially involved in the discussion. Also, we did TCM last year, right? Do you have another choice smash?

Also, let us know if we should move any dates around. If you'll be out of town on the day your film is up, an actor's birthday, day specific themes in any of them, whatever.

The date chosen for Zombieland should give people enough time to see it in the theater, 16 days, right? And the only new release of the month is Trick 'r Treat, with 24 days difference.
