Damn, I missed that! Guess I will be on the lookout for a Volume 7 coupon. Please post if you see one!
Thanks! --John |
Re: Sony to begin Stooge DVD sets
This set is going to be special. Of the 22 shorts on here, all but 3 or 4 have never been released on DVD and a few were never released on VHS. Some of Shemp's best work is here, i.e Gents in a Jam, Tricky Dicks, and Goof on the Roof. Widescreen and 3D are added bonuses.

Re: Sony to begin Stooge DVD sets
Drove all over trying to pick up this set. Two different Best Buys, both the entire stock looked like it was run over by a truck. Fry's received one, one and it was already sold. Finally went to Wal- Mart, their cases were bashed as well... What's going on? is it like that everywhere?

Re: Sony to begin Stooge DVD sets
I saw some at Barnes & Noble and FYE and none were damaged.

Got the last one at my local Best Buy. No damage.

Re: Sony to begin Stooge DVD sets
Ouch, the anaglyph 3-D (magenta/green) conversions of "Spooks" and "Pardon My Backfire" do not look good even by anaglyph standards. They are in anamorphic widescreen, but the picture is full of aliasing and artifacts that shouldn't be there. Even the flat prints don't look great.
I wasn't expecting them to look anything like the original polarized (clear glasses) presentations as seen in theatres, but man, the conversions are below par. Having seen beautiful dual 35mm prints in the original polarized 3-D at the 2003 and 2006 World 3-D Expos, I know that better elements are out there. Even the old 1960's era red/blue anaglyph conversions which I've seen in 16mm form look better than the DVDs. Still, a nice set and well worth the price, just don't expect much from the 3-D shorts. They didn't translate well to anaglyph at all. |
Re: Sony to begin Stooge DVD sets
Who has the best price?
|
Re: Sony to begin Stooge DVD sets
I paid $19.96 at Walmart. They had about 8 copies left and the cases were all in excellent condition.
|
Re: Sony to begin Stooge DVD sets
Yeah, I think its $19.99 everywhere.. no real deals that I know of. I thought maybe the glasses caused problems with the packaging, but I saw several pristine today.. Maybe someone forgot to pack the glasses in some boxes & had to repack them, causing the smashed cases....

Re: Sony to begin Stooge DVD sets
It's $17.96 shipped at Columbia House. I got mine yesterday when the $10 off coupon was working at CH so $7.96 for me. They have it listed as a Pre-Order with Release date of 11/24/2009 but I can wait a few more weeks to save $10. :D

Re: Sony to begin Stooge DVD sets
The only drawback on this set, if you hit play all, it plays the standard Spooks, then the 3D, then the standard Backfire, then 3D Backfire, so you have to skip one or the other... not a big deal, but thought I'd pass on the info...

Re: Sony to begin Stooge DVD sets
Whats remaining ? Is it 16 w/Shemp and 16 w/Joe Besser? They should be done with these releases by the end of next year.

Re: Sony to begin Stooge DVD sets
Actually, some think the next volume will finish off the remaining shorts (1955-1959).

Does Sony own the rights to the movies?

Most of them, yes. The Curly-Joe DeRita films, which came after Besser, are already on DVD but a remastered release is planned after the shorts.

Re: Sony to begin Stooge DVD sets
This site usually has excellent reviews of these Stooge releases but there has not been one posted for volume 7. Hopefully that changes.
