Sony to begin Stooge DVD sets

The Three Stooges boxsets are coming and Amazon is pre-selling the first set. Covers the years 1934-1936 ... MSRP is $24.99 but is being pre-sold for about $18.

Great deal... 340 minutes. That's over 3x the length of the ill-fated previous DVD releases that were about the same price or more.

Amazing, I was just thinking about this about 10 minutes ago too. That's crazy.

It says years 1-2 but i can see this set being 1934-1936 because there are a total of 19 shorts between those years and this set runs for a total of 340 minutes and that would hold 19 shorts easily.

This was posted by Mike "Precode" Schlesinger over at MonsterKid forums

http://p075.ezboard.com/fmonsterkidc...art=26&stop=27

Quote:
Anyway, here's the scoop: they will be released chronologically, at least three years' worth at a time, at reasonable prices, to conclude in '09 with a box of all the features. In addition, there will be some extras, including the solo shorts of Shemp, Joe D and Joe B, and the half dozen or so Screen Snapshots they appeared in.

And they will NOT be colorized! That ship has sailed and sunk.

Mike S.
(a proud Shemp fan who notes that he was the only Stooge who had a successful solo career)

I have been waiting and waiting for something like this.

But your saying that in 09 they will rerelease everything again in a big box/collection? So I shouldnt bother with the volume releases?

The '09 release will be a box set of Three Stooges films, not a complete volume of shorts. At least that's how I read it.

That is not what im saying because i have only posted what Mike wrote (I am not Mike) and about the not bothering buying the volume releases, that is upto you but in 09 the box of all the features might either be all the shorts or the movies the three stooges made. So you might find that you waited 2 years for nothing.

Damn... aren't there like a toal of 200 shorts or something like that spanning almost 20 years? That's going to be a lot of sets. Personally, I never cared for Shemp or Joe Besser, so I'll probably buy sets only until Curly is replaced.

If each set is three year at a time then this is how it'll be.

1934-1936 - 19 shorts

1937-1939 - 24 shorts

1940-1942 - 23 shorts

1943-1945 - 22 shorts

1946-1948 - 25 shorts

1949-1951 - 24 shorts

1952-1954 - 22 shorts

1955-1957 - 23 shorts

1958 - 8 shorts

So we should be looking at 9 volumes and 1958 being the odd one out unless Sony packages 1955-1958 all together therefore having 8 volumes...

That wouldn't be too bad. And if they're really wrapping it up in 2009, that would mean they're probably going to release one every three months or so, so 8 volumes sounds about right.

I was wondering if it would be possible for Sony/Columbia to release the 2 Shemp 3D episodes in REAL 3D for your TV. Is there a practical way to that?

Are there any examples of any recent DVD releases where the 3d is good for your TV???

This sounds very intriguing, but seeing that I have already purchased the previous releases from Columbia, I'll await for more information (remastered shorts, any extras, etc...) before deciding whether to double dip.

Larry, Moe and Curly Are "N'Yuk, N'Yuk, N'Yuk"-ing it Up in a New, Definitive Volume of Classic Shorts

THE THREE STOOGES COLLECTION
VOLUME ONE: YEARS 1 - 3

All 19 Digitally-Restored Two-Reelers from 1934 through 1936 Packaged in a Two-Disc DVD

AVAILABLE ON OCTOBER 30

CULVER CITY, CALIF. (August 20, 2007) – Eye-gouging, nose-tweaking, stomach-poking, ear-pulling, head-slapping, pie-throwing, and seltzer-spraying can only mean one thing. The classic comedy trio of Larry, Moe, and Curly are back doing what they do best. On October 30, Sony Pictures Home Entertainment will launch its definitive new series of Three Stooges DVDs with The Three Stooges Collection: Years 1-3. This first volume includes all 19 shorts from the boys’ first three years at Columbia. The two-reelers are chronologically organized by their original release date and painstakingly restored from the original negatives for the very best picture and audio quality. The DVD will be available in a two-disc package for the standard retail price of $24.96.

The Three Stooges are one of the most significant screen comedy teams of the 20th century, on par with Laurel and Hardy, Abbott and Costello, and Martin and Lewis -- an inspiration to generations of comics that followed. The trio’s film career began in the early 1930s, reached its slapstick peak during their tenure at Columbia (1934-1957), and lasted well into the 1950s. After their initial retirement, they were rediscovered by an enthusiastic new generation through the medium of television and have outstripped all their contemporaries in terms of lasting popularity. "The Three Stooges Collection: Years 1 - 3" finally pays the Stooges their due by tracing the evolution and development of their craft by presenting the films in progressive order.

The Three Stooges Collection: Years 1 - 3 includes the following titles:

1934 - WOMAN HATERS, PUNCH DRUNKS (only short actually written by the Stooges), the Oscar® nominated MEN IN BLACK, and THREE LITTLE PIGSKINS (featuring a young Lucille Ball).

1935 - HORSES' COLLARS (their first Western spoof), RESTLESS KNIGHTS (first “triple-slap” in a Stooge short), POP GOES THE EASEL (first film for frequent director Del Lord), UNCIVIL WARRIORS (set during the Civil War), PARDON MY SCOTCH (first Stooge short to use “Listen to the Mockingbird” as its theme song), HOI POLLOI (remade as Half-Wits Holiday in 1947), and THREE LITTLE BEERS.

1936 - ANTS IN THE PANTRY (features silent star Clara Kimball Young), MOVIE MANIACS (features Charlie Chaplin’s first wife Mildred Harris), HALF-SHOT SHOOTERS (first short in which the Stooges get killed), DISORDER IN THE COURT (features the famous “swearing in” scene with Curly), A PAIN IN THE PULLMAN (the longest short of the series), FALSE ALARMS, WHOOPS, I'M AN INDIAN!, and SLIPPERY SILKS (featuring the first Stooges cream dessert fight).

The Three Stooges Collection: Years 1 - 3 has a run time of approximately 345 minutes and is not rated. Artwork is available at www.SPHEPUBLICITY.COM. Visit Sony Pictures Home Entertainment on the Web at www.SonyPictures.com.

Two Discs? More than a handful of shorts? Chronological order? Not colorized? 24 bucks?

I am so there!

And it's about damn time!

Per the Wikipedia, Curly's last/Shemp's first shorts were in 1947 and Shemp's last was in 1956 with Joe's first in 1957.
