This is why there's a thriving custom cover community - to correct messes like this. I'm with LorenzoL, they can package it in whatever pathetic excuse for a case passes muster at the studio design dept. these days. I'll have them proudly decked out in matching custom covers in no time. I'm just happy to finally have them on DVD in reasonably good quality.

You may be right, but the fact that rumors of the Series set are surfacing now, seem to indicate that the Season II release in April might be a quick-to-market (I know, it's been years) cash grab to lure us into a double dip.

I'm taking a "wait & see" approach until the mega set is out and I can evaluate the choices for myself. I can always get Season II later on if the Series set is no big whoop.

According to this review posted at the Dugpa.com forum, supplemental content from the season sets will not be carried over to the rumored[?] Complete Mystery set.

Oh, and the Amazon.com review referenced above does not mention that substantial extras are apparently included on this Season 2 set; however, unlike the Artisan set, there are no commentary tracks.

If this is the case, maybe I'll pick up the comprehensive set after a price drop.

Are the "log lady intros" separated off as extras or are they embedded into each episode?

It seems that a lot of people on this board seem to think that there will be multiple releases of Twin Peaks. You have to remember that while I think (and most of you think) that this is the greatest TV series ever, it really is not that popular. The 1st season boxset sold OK, but not great. It more than likely did not make much $ for the studio.

I for one am stoked that they are releasing Season 2 at all. Extras are cool and all but to have good quality versions of each episode is really what I am happy about.

I will be very surprised if they ever release a "Complete Mystery" Boxset (it only took what, 5 years for Season 2 to come out). If they do, I will buy that too. Then I will have 2 copies of the complete series...just in case one of the discs gets damaged.

OK - Thats all.

From what I recall, sales on Artisan's season one boxed set were excellent, even though it retailed for $60, only had seven episodes, and no pilot.

The reason Artisan didn't do a season two is because of Paramount. (Long story short, Artisan bought the rights to the Spelling library from Paramount, and then when Paramount realized that the library had more value than they anticipated they started dicking Artisan around by withholding masters. Which is why a number of Artisan's DVDs from that time were full-frame and poor quality.)

Thanks for that linky! I'm certainly less enthusiastic about this release, but at least my worries about how bad this set could have been are allayed.

On that note also, I am certainly glad I held on to my copy of Artisan's S1!

Great review, I'm disappointed they are not including the previously on's. They really don't get the fans sometimes. I always looked at really great dvd sets as archives; a chronicle of a movie or tv series. Previously ons, advertisements, deleted scenes , audio commentaries, should all be required. But like always it's better than not having it at all.

thanks for the info in your review, while i would love the set to be overflowing with extras, theres no way i am any less enthusaistic about this set.

and i agree with you about episode 14, best television episode ever, so intense and haunting. i feel bad for the people who jumped ship earlier in the season, millions during and after the second season premiere.

Since I'm trying to use up Borders gift cards before they expire, I'll be buying Twin Peaks S2 for $36.99 whereas I would normally wait 1-2 years for a $20 price. For all of those that are disappointed by the review of this set (I was too) because of not-quite-as-good picture quality, no DTS, and very few extras, fear not... the fact I'm buying this means there will probably be an enhanced complete series release with more extras and the pilot episode for a similar price in the next 1-2 years. Of course that is pure conjecture based solely on my past experience. :-)

Read Shannon's great review and I'm a little bummed that this set is such a step down in terms of Season 1's disc treatment. I still have VHS copies from the original broadcast of this entire season, and I'm especially peeved that the recaps and previews aren't included. I wonder if any of that stuff will show up on the rumored Full Series set later on.

I really think they should have tried for consistency here. The absence of commentaries and the DTS is really too bad. New Line even included a great DTS track for "Fire Walk with Me" and this one series where SOUND IS KEY.

Still, I guess we're all just thankful to see the 5.1 on there at least, and a smattering of extras. I'll be buying it.

DTS is becoming more and more scarce. I would have bet hard-earned cash that this set would NOT have a DTS track when it was first rumored.

Where is that guy with the sig "No DTS = No Sale"???

Since I am impacient, I am really tempted to get this version
http://cgi.ebay.com/Twin-Peaks-Seas...1QQcmdZViewItem
its apparently the region 4 release that also claims to have the pilot as well. I can handle the pal speedup.
No reason for that.

Anyone that wants the first season of the show AND the pilot then I'd suggest you buy the Mexican DVD release. It was released by Paramount and it's basically the same set as the Artisan except with an extra disc for the pilot episode.

Those who do not speak Spanish have nothing to worry either since the disc is trilingual as it asks you what language you want the menus in before the menus come up. Also, the disc is NTSC so you don't have to deal with annoying PAL speedups.

Here is a link to where it can be purchased: http://www.mixup.com.mx/mixup/produc...bdept_id=23012

I highly recommend this option. The pilot episode included in the set is in the best quality on the market and far better than the Asian DVD release that has been floating around which has shoddy video quality, a bad 5.1 mix, and is a bad PAL-NTSC conversion (is NTSC but running on PAL speed).

Hope that helps.

Anyone with the VHS of the pilot (with the tacked on ending) know exactly where to stop it? I have the video and I'm getting ready to introduce the series to someone, and I'd like to know where the original pilot ended.

As I recall, there's a scene with Andy and Lucy getting ready for bed. Lucy is playing the trombone (?). Basically, that's the start of the tacked on bits. Stop there.

I haven't seen the VHS version in several years and the old memory could be failing, but I think that's the spot.

Yes, this is the place to stop. After that scene, all the broadcast pilot contained was a close-up of a gloved hand digging up the locket, then the credits. The VHS version goes on for another 15 minutes or so of footage that you'll mostly see again in later episodes.

Thank you for the tips on where to stop. Hopefully one day we'll have a quality DVD version of the pilot, but this will suffice for now.

I agree with The Running Man. It's worth noting though, that this isn't a region 1 dvd, right?

Oh, I didn't calculate the currency difference. Not bad, but these discs aren't region 1, right?
