Seems like I'm the only one that gets excited for re-releases/special editions of movies I really like. If a Garden State SE came out, I'd LOVE it. I'm looking forward to the Napoleon Dynamite SE and will judge whether I buy it or not based on the special features included.

We find out before hand what's on it and how it stacks up to the original - if you don't think it's good enough to upgrade, why are you people bitching about it? You have the choice...buy both, ebay the first version, etc. It's not like anyone's forcing you to upgrade. I bought the first edition of The Bourne Identity - a movie that I love. The 'Extreme Edition' came out and I decided not to upgrade. BIG DEAL.

Geez...I wasn't saying it was a bad thing. Gimme more stuff, I always say, heh. If a super duper collector's edition came out of Garden State, I'd be right behind you in line. But if they were to do a screwjob like Universal's done with The Big Lebowski? Not a chance.

Hey js1 . . . welcome to the forum. In general, we try to keep discussion about actually movies in the "Movie Talk" sub-forum of the site and limit the discussion in the "DVD Talk" forum to details of the DVD releases themselves (sometimes it works, sometimes not ). Anyway, that's all Cornelius1047 was trying to say . . . he just did it more . . . um . . . subtly.

Anyway, welcome aboard . . . Hope you enjoy your time here.

Edit: Just realized he did the same thing two posts before you . . . that's not cool.

Cornelius1047, threadcrapping is against forum rules. If you aren't interested in the DVD, please don't post in the thread.

Uh, you've misunderstood my intentions. I wasn't threadcrapping as I own and love this movie. It simply has no plot. I don't think any fan of the movie can really defend this.

Seriously, guys, I think I've been here long enough to understand what a threadcrap is and that it's against forum rules. All apologies for not making it clear. It was a joke. And a bit of the truth.

That what I was doing. I have been a long time lurker, but now I feel like posting. And I don't want to try to piss people off here . I was just stating how I felt at the time. I feel that the dvd could use a "upgrade".

Nothing on the current disc addresses the cult phenomenon that has occurred since the DVD was released--mostly because the DVD helped create it. A new SE could have loads of features dedicated to that aspect of the movie--a second commentary track that focuses on the pop culture of it; a visit to the town used as the filming site, which has established a cottage tourism industry thanks to the movie; a look at all the merchandising; a feature on the stars' highly successful nightclub and college appearances; the movie's lingo invading schools; etc.

The current DVD does a great job of surveying the actual movie and its making, so there's little need for an upgrade if that's all people want. But much of the Napoleon Dynamite story has happened in the past year, and that's what a new SE should explore.

I certainly don't think plotlessness is anything to defend given that the term "plot" is generally employed as shorthand for "formulaic structure that feels familiar". If anything, "plotlessness" is a virtue.

But it's certainly not a virtue "Napolean Dynamite" can claim, as it's a simply constructed film that hews exactly to the traditional three-act structure, with each of its little conflicts set-up, developed, and finally resolved, even to the point of including the pat climactic ending where the misunderstood underdog wins the affection of the collected student body over his (usually very blonde) nemesis. If anything, it's a fantastically unconventional film despite its utterly conventional plot structure.

Uh, yeah. Okay. So it has a plot structure, but not much in way of actual plot. Not having a plot (or much of one) doesn't necessarily make a movie bad (see Dazed and Confused) just as having one doesn't necessarily make one good (see most Michael Bay movies).

I don't know. To me, the movie feels like it could basically be 3 episodes of a TV show thrown together to make a movie. There's an arc, to be sure, but not much of one. I still think this would make an excellent Fox show. I'd watch up until it was canceled.

I suppose this is good news, my current copy of Napoleon Dynamite got scratched pretty bad somehow, so I may just sell that one and buy the SE.

Hey, I said somehow, and it was most likely from letting friends and family borrow it. The rest of my discs are pretty much spotless, though.
