I picked this up yesterday also, as I had never gotten around to picking up part two. The packaging is nice and compact (even if it is hard to get the cases out of the sleeve), and for the price, if all you wanted was one or didn't have both, it's worth it. But otherwise.. the scrapbook really didn't blow me away, and as said, the missing extras.. (granted I haven't gotten around to watching it yet). Were there any extras from part two on the original release?

i watched the two movies last night. is it me, or did the first Ghostbusters movie still looked worn/old? they could've cleaned up the print a bit, but i guess that would be asking for too much.

You've seen the comparison pics right?

i agree. its still worn looking. You dont notice the difference when your watching the movie, still looks like an old movie. Colors are better but its not any more sharper.

my brother and i were both watching this, and we both noticed the movie looked "old". they remastered the dvd, but didn't bother cleaning up the original print, so the film still has the muddy, faded look.

Picked this up and that second cartoon does seem to be playing back a bit too slow. I don't know if its 3/4 speed exactly but it doesn't seem right.
As far as the print, I have to agree the original does not look that much better on this new release. That is why you can't always believe stills. The colors are a bit better, but the difference wasn't enough to upgrade for alone.
However, I only paid $12 at Sam's for this and didn't have the second movie so its a worthwhile purchase at the price. Scrapbook was a nice addition and overall its a good value for $12. Especially if you don't have the movies yet on DVD. I'm still keeping my original DVD release of the first one so I at least didn't lose anything from that DVD.

I think the first Ghostbusters looks significantly grainier than the previous release. Just check out Chapter 4 when they show Dean Yeager. His suit alone has more grain than entire films have nowadays. The second film does look a tad better but I'm still going to sell this. What a waste.

Just picked this up tonight and I had to check this thread to find out about the full screen on the back. I almost didn't get it.
That's really bizarre.

I read that. And to me, it says: Ghostbusters Special Features. It says nothing about the movie there. Which threw me off more. While I was in the store, I asked the guy who was equally confused, and he looked at it online and they said WS. I figured you guys would know so I just got it then checked when I got home.
And, below it says Ghostbusters 2 Special Features, and there is no mention of widescreen there.

sheesh, all the complaints... it's two movies in a good packaging, with a little booklet extra, all for the tidy sum of $12... and these movies look as good as they ever have. My only complaint about the release (yes I picked it up) was the removal of the MST3k commentary, and while that sucks, I can deal with it.

A closer look at some of the extras will demonstrate what I mean. The Ghostbusters DVD received a lot of hype because of its "video commentary." This meant that instead of just hearing the participants talk about the film, we could also SEE their silhouettes Mystery Science Theater 3000 style.
I guess that sounded like a cool idea, but in reality, it's an almost complete bust. Oh, the commentary from director Ivan Reitman, actor/cowriter Harold Ramis, and associate producer Joe Medjuck offers a solid discussion of the making of the film. It's not the best I've heard, but the three of them do a good job of providing interesting facts about the picture.
So as an audio commentary, it's just fine. My question is: what's the point of the video part? Although if you look closely, you'll notice that the three shadows do move, they rarely do so significantly enough to warrant attention; they might as well have put a stationary cutout up on the screen. The idea sounds vaguely interesting, but the fact stands that there's absolutely no point to it, at least as it's executed here. I never watch films and listen to audio commentaries; I prefer to tape them and listen to them in my car. I made an exception for Ghostbusters just because I wanted to see if the video aspect would add anything. It doesn't. Do what I should have done: tape it and listen to it at your leisure.

Would someone be kind enough to spare me reading all 17 pages of this thread and just answer these two questions for me directly:
- Besides the new transfer, the scrapbook and the 2 episodes of the cartoon, is there anything new that the original GB DVD doesn't have?
- And besides the trivia notes, trailers and the "MST3K video" aspect of the commentary track, is there anything that this new release fails to carry over from the old DVD?

- Besides the new packaging, the scrapbook, the new transfers, and the two cartoons, there is nothing this set has that the original DVDs do not.
- Aside from the "MST3K" aspect of the commentary, the trivia track (which I didn't even know existed, but am very curious to see now that I've heard about it), and the trailers, there is nothing this set fails to carry over from the previous releases.
And for those reasons I do not own this set. New packaging (cool as it is), a scrapbook (which doesn't sound like much to get excited about), new transfers (which look fine, but I'm perfectly pleased with the previous), and a couple cartoons are not enough to warrant a double-dip. This is little more than repackaging as far as I'm concerned. But that's just me.

I know I keep voicing the same assertion. Guess I'm just kind of pissed that they chose the course of re-releasing basically the same material rather than starting from scratch and creating truly special editions of both films.

No, I'm with you, CertifiedTHX. I don't really care that much about GB2 so my interest was mostly pertaining to GB1. I hate cardboard digipaks, and the cartoon isn't important enough for me to buy this set for alone. And it doesn't sound like the new transfer is all that spectacular an improvement. I'll be sticking with the original DVD until they come out with something a lot better or the HD-DVD streets, one of the two.

I sold my old editions for the new set, but havnt watched it yet.
For the post above- its not a digi-pack, its 2 slim cases that slide out the side of the box if that helps. (I dont care for digipacs anymore either

I picked this up. I have a previous version which was a box set with 2 dvd's.
I was going to sell it, then everybody said that for the new set, part 1 would be full screen, so I kept it.

Yeah that box is WAY too small. Still I think its a nice looking package. Hope it holds up with all the pushing and pulling it takes to get the discs/book out of it.
