For those that have the gift set, how's the audio presentation on the new discs?

Does this one have the MST3K-type commentary like the old DVD, or did they drop that?

That's interesting, and looks like you're right on that... OAR is 2.35:1, so it's been "cropped" but is now OAR.

I also want to know if it has the MST3k style commentary on it, that rocked.

So no trailers, right? In easter egg form?

Can we get clarification?

Picked this up - nice packaging and booklet. Too bad they didn't go with a black/red color scheme but it still looks good. Man, those animated shows bring back the memories, that was my first exposure to the ghostbusters as a kid.

The projection standard for "scope" movies was actually changed to 2.40:1 back in the 70s. It's still referred to as "2.35:1" out of custom.

Regardless, the difference is pretty negligible. It's not unusual for two different telecine transfers to have slight differences at the edges of the frame. This is where the optical audio tracks are stored on theatrical prints, and even though image may have been exposed to the camera it isn't always intended to be seen.

TV overscan crops out more than that anyway. I wouldn't worry about it.

Forgive me for not re-reading this entire thread for the answer (though I did attempt a thread search), but I can't seem to find the previous disc's subtitle trivia track...am I missing it, or was this something else that was left off this edition? If it is indeed gone, then it's a shame...I'm not sure why Sony had to leave anything off this release (MST3K-style commentary, trailers, trivia track). Great transfers, but a shame about the downgraded (even in a relatively minor sense) special features, and about the egregious aspect ratio mislabeling on the back cover.

Took me 10 minutes to get them out of the box. I don't even know if I'm going to use it because the damn things were so tight in there!!!

Can someone do a definitive comparison btwn the old versions and this new one? Also, some pictures of the scrap book would be cool...I'm curious about that.

It seems a bit short in height... I put the book and GB in first and then slide GB 2 in-between. Otherwise the one on the end seems to get caught on the cardboard folds when you put it in last. A couple of good shakes usually dislodges one of them to get out.

Gently hold on to the spine with the exposed disk cases pointing down and give it a few good up and down motions, the disks slide out enough to pull them out.

No one else got a box with Ghostbusters listed as full screen on the back and Ghostbusters 2 as widescreen?

That really freaked me out, but BB told me that I could return it if they weren't both widescreen.

Thankfully, I didn't need to do that, because they were both widescreen, but all of the boxes at my BB had the same misprint on the back of the box.

Every copy is like that. The early reviews stated that they would be that way.

And to answer my own question from earlier, the text commentary from Ghostbusters is indeed gone. Shame...and seemingly unnecessary. But at least the regular commentary is intact (though without the MST3K-style effect).

Is it just a problem with my copy or does it seem like the second cartoon episode (Partners in Slime) is playing too slow? It seems like it's only 3/4 speed or something. I tried it on multiple dvd players and get the same effect.

Any chance that info is just duplicated in the booklet? I'd much rather read it rather than sit through the whole film via that method in order to read several minutes of text.

Went to Best Buy; had the set in my hands. Great packaging, though points knocked for the incorrect aspect ratio marking on the back and the improper angle of the "no ghost" logo, as was brought up a while ago. I was tempted.

But I put it back. I can't justify $13 for new packaging and a scrapbook right now. If I didn't have the previous releases, I would have done it. No contest. So, too, if these were brand new special editions of both films. But these are more-or-less repackagings. Transfers are okay, but nothing special. Certainly nothing significantly better than what I already have. Maybe another time.

The "scrapbook" is mostly storyboards, doodles, and bios, with very little new information. I kept the old inserts from the first releases, and they have more actual information about the movies than the scrapbook (not to mention that there's little to no reference to Ghostbusters II, outside of a few posters at the back).

So to answer your question: no, the excellent trivia track has not been reproduced in any form. It's just gone. Good work, Sony.
