if the mail-in offer for the "old-school" packaging is confirmed.

Anyway, the actual packaging looks pretty sweet, very creative, and it's nice that every Simpson is getting their own box. Although I still comtemplate whether Bart's "head" is worth collecting.

What a load of B.S.

Fox wouldnt officially make so candid a flyer about "nerds" etc. That and you'd think TVshowsonDVD would have mentioned it when they opened their packaging.

Really - how does it suck?
Aside from personally not liking the look, they're not designed well. Why are there two flaps, plastic and cardboard? That will be awkward to open. It appears they added the cardboard flap to hold the booklet- why not just add a booklet flap to the plastic one? Or better yet, make the cardboard flap plastic and get rid of the awkward plastic flap entirely.

How do you get the discs out? It appears they're on individual plastic cases that will flip like a book. That's less awkward than the old accordian-style holders, but I've found the new ones to be flimsier, needing a more cautionary handling.

[ minutes for FOX Studios Marketing meeting - 1/20/05 ]

David(Director of Marketing): Here's our agenda for this morning's meeting - the design for the 5th re-release of the Star Wars films, the Unrated Extreme edition of 'On Golden Pond', and our packing designs for the next Simpsons Season. Stanley, you're new here, why don't you start with the Simpsons sets?

Stanley: I propose we completely do a 180 degrees on the packaging we started with the first 5 seasons and make the cases based on the heads of the main characters. We'll also use cheap plastic to make the durability on these horrible. According to our customer survey last year, a high percentage of people do want their DVD sets open like Altoids boxes. How does that sound? Good? I'm going on break.

[ end of copy ]

Well, let's just hope that this doesn't lead to Fox releasing season 4 of 24 in a big Keifer Sutherland head.

Although I might buy the next season of The Shield if it came in a Michael Chiklis head.

While I'm not big on collectible packaging, I have to give props to Fox for being creative. I do hope that phone number to get traditional packaging is not a joke because I'd prefer that packaging on my shelf.

Wow, the rest are even worse than I imagined...I wasn't crazy about the designs to begin with but now seeing how cheap they look I reeeeeaally hope that number is true.

If the offer is legit, I am pretty sure it won't cost you anything.

Current Film has a review of the set:

http://www.currentfilm.com/dvdreview...sonss6dvd.html

Sounds good...and it confirms that there is a commentary on "A Star Is Burns" (though it doesn't list the specific participants).

Those other heads suck. Honestly. I am all for gimmicky packaging that is creative and fun, but this just really turns me off. I just hope that Fox keeps up offering the alternative boxes to the fans for future releases.

Really, though, they should release the sets in both styles of boxes, with the heads as the "limited edition" style.

Agreed. I bet retailers (both b&m and etailers) would be happer about that too, with sets that are easier to pack, shelve, and stack without damage.

The Simpsons heads would look cool if I had a place to show them off but I don't and I probably wouldn't go through that mess anyways. But no matter what, I'll still continue to buy The Simpsons, it's one of the best shows ever and it's the content that count.

I'm just wondering if they will continue to use the character heads after season ten and move to other characters?

And one that no doubt will be entirely different from the upcoming suck ass design. Maybe season 11 will be shipped inside the carcass of a dead cat to honor Snowball I. Put that on your shelf, suckers!
