Universal has a history of this... putting things on the release schedule and then inexplicably removing them. Double Indemnity and Duel come immediately to mind, but I know there have been others.

There doesn't tend to be any explanation, so I doubt we'll get one this time...

Shit, and I just pre-ordered this thing the other day. I bet I get an email from Amazon soon.

EDIT: Well, just checked my email and my Amazon account, and it's still cued up in my order.

Could be any number of things. Could be that they discovered through internet discussions that their extended version didn't have completed special effects, or perhaps Lynch was actually wanting to do an offically authorized version.

... or it's just Universal, which has a history of unexplained moves.

Believe me, Universal knows damn well about the state of the 'extended version'. Colleen Benn (VP of home video) has commented on this issue more often than I'm sure she ever wanted to.

Really? Would any of those comments be online? I'd love to read them.

I know I read comments in Sight&Sound's old laserdisc catalog (which is not online, as the company is gone)... I can't find any web sites with any comments, except for vague things like this in alt.video.laserdisc (from back in 1996):

When I spoke with Colleen Benn of MCA/Universal last week she told me that
she is one of the biggest proponents of releasing a Signarure Collection
of Dune on LaserDisc.

MCA/Universal's rights to Dune expired a few years ago. The studio is
currently in negotiations for the rights to the movie.

If Colleen ever gets the go ahead to do a Signature Collection of
Dune she says she wants to do it properly. She has no intention of
releasing any movie with the pseudonym Alan Smithie in place of the
name of the real director. She'll do everything she can to get David Lynch
involved in the project and they'll release the version of the movie that
he approves. Of course she'll push to have as much footage as possible
restored to the movie, but the final cut will be left entirely upto the
director. Again if it ever happens it will be THX and letterboxed.

I guess we can only dream about it for now.

I know that Colleen commented on this topic REPEATEDLY back in late 1990s. She had always said that they would never release the TV version in the U.S. -- which is why this release surprised me.

Well, if they do a proper release with a fully completed and restored extended cut, then I'll happily wait for an official release.

Thanks bboisvert*, wonder if she's still there? I'm still hoping they only used the TV version as a starting point with regards to the extra footage, but used the script to make it flow right. I relented and started reading the Dune prequels, and I'm loving being back in this universe, and I was extremely overjoyed to hear about this DVD release. Let's hope they come thru.

*what the hell is that anyways? I've stumbled over that name in my head for years.

Try living with it as an actual name!

My last name is Boisvert (French for 'Greenwood'). Whenever I give my last name for something, I have to spell it out for people about 6 times. And they still get it wrong.

Same with my last name. My last name is Italian for 'Miller'. It's a 10 letter name and I have to spell it out a lot as well. No, Mike Lowrey is not my real name. Mike Lowrey as in Will Smith's character in Bad Boys. Just always loved how Martin Lawrence said it in the two films. "Yeah, you're Mike Lauuu..rey."

I doubt Lynch caused the delay. As a rule, he has disowned the movie and doesn't give a crap what Universal does with it. The only exception I can think of would be if Universal thought they were going to market the longer version of the film as a "Director's Cut" or keep Lynch's name on it without his approval.

Otherwise, I bet some obscure rights problem is behind the delay.

First I sold my copy of Double Indemnity and now Dune...Sigh. At least Dune was a whole lot cheaper to acquire than Double Indemnity.

Um, holy crap?

From http://www.digitalbits.com:

Well get this... after years of saying he would never revisit Dune, at the 11th hour director David Lynch decided that he wanted to be involved in the new DVD after all. Which means that when it's eventually released, not only is the DVD going to include the original theatrical version of the film... it will include a brand new "director's extended cut" edited by Lynch himself! No kidding.

Holy Crap!

This now replaces the mono re-release of Jaws as the best DVD news in 2005!
