Star Wars Original Trilogy Midnight Openings at Best Buy
September 07, 2004

Select Best Buy store locations are set to celebrate the release of the Star Wars Trilogy on DVD, and the debut of the new LucasArts game Star Wars: Battlefront, with fans across the U.S.
Stores in nine select locations plan to host Midnight Opening events starting Monday night, Sept. 20, and extending into the early hours of Tuesday morning, Sept. 21, the date of the worldwide release of the Trilogy and Battlefront.

Star Wars fans have been waiting for this release for years, and retailers everywhere will be welcoming fans and film enthusiasts to their stores on Sept. 21. The Best Buy locations have planned events specifically with fans in mind. The evening will start with festivities, music, and events such as Star Wars trivia outside each store, and will culminate at 12:01 AM on Sept. 21 when the stores open their doors for shopping.

Lucky winners at each location will take home prize packages that include the Star Wars Trilogy DVD set, Battlefront, and an Xbox video game system. Members of the 501st and Rebel Legion Star Wars costuming groups will be on hand to add authentic Star Wars ambiance.

Best Buy, Lucasfilm, and LucasArts, in cooperation with Xbox and Master Replicas, have put together exclusive prize packages for these Midnight Opening events:

Darth Vader's Imperial Grand Prize -- 1 per store

Here is an interesting story about my trip to Best Buy yesterday.

I asked one of their employees in the dvd section if they were going to open at midnight on Monday. They said no, so I said "Looks like I'll be going to Media Play instead". Then they said something along the lines of "You shouldn't, their box set won't have the 4th disc.". I was left almost speechless. I guess it's Best Buy's policy to lie to try and get more sales. This is the same store where someone told me that deepdiscountdvd sells bootlegs and you should only buy dvds from bestbuy.com.

Yikes, why didn't you tell him that it wasn't true?

I wouldn't take one employee's response as a condemnation of the entire Best Buy chain; he's more than likely just a dumb kid.

I wish I could pick it up at midnight somewhere, but in all honesty, it's not like I'd watch them at 12:30am. Better to get it the next day and have time to watch it.

I prefer to own and run my own biz and make my own hours. working for someone else has never worked for me...as I like having complete control. my job requires much "body healing" time and based on my schedule for the remainder of the week(about 50 hours worth)....buying and watching them just after midnight...then sleeping and healing all day Tuesday...well...that works for me.

I'm still debating on even picking this up. The first is the only one I really liked. The second was okay also, but the third sucked arse.

It's not like the proximity to Lucasfilm has anything to do with it. I'm sure the list of stores is simply 9 hand picked locations from their top performing sites. It's only about the turn out they think they can get.

When you pay $8.00 an hour for employees, this is what you get. I think Best Buy is a great place to pick up media, but I'd never ask any of them anything.

What is that supposed to mean? What do you think he should be doing at 11:15 am? A lot of us use this board while we are at work all day. Not everyone works at Taco Bell you know.

Edit: Oh, I get it. Sorry, I'm a little slow this morning.

I think he was being sarcastic and is actually one of those people who're gonna be somewhere tonight waiting for the release of the DVD.

As for why, I think I answered this before. Midnight events are part of the Star Wars Culture. It's always fun to hang out with people you don't know yet share something common with.
