I hate to point this out but on the 25th, looting had broken out in Port-au-Prince. Aristide was crawling around the Palace on his hands and knees working his cell phone. The Rebels issued a statement saying they were coming and they were going to arrest him.

Then Profiler drops off the map.

Coincidence?

I don't think so.

As a paid user of DVD Profiler, I'm content to sit patient while they (hopefully) fix whatever is wrong.

If they are/have gone out of business, then that is truly a shame, but I still consider my $25 well-spent in support of a product I used extensively.

Either way, it's not really the end of the world, is it?

I will agree that the program is full of bad listings. Studios and genres are very haphazard and many details are wrong. Never bothered me too much, just one of the downsides of so many people adding DVDs to the database.
My thoughts exactly. With people updating with erroneous information all the time, it just seems like too much work to try to keep on top of when you have 1500+ titles.

Isn't this threadcrapping?

As was pointed out, this thread is about DVD Profiler being down, not about a bunch of crybabies bitching about what is and isn't proper according to the rules.

Perhaps it would be better if you all started a thread with a subject like "DVD Profiler: Let's Argue about the Rules which are now Moot because the Site is completely DOWN"

So does anyone actually have any good information about the site being down? When it might be back up? Anything?

Ken Cole from InterVocative Software just posted this to a similar thread over at HTF:

"Thanks for your concern. I have good news and bad news. The good news is that it's not bankruptcy - IVS as a company is alive and well. The bad news is that it's not the NYT article - just incredibly bad timing for a hardware failure. Couple this with a comedy of errors involving our servers and ISPs, and we have the downtime as a result. I had held off responding, hoping to have a resolution timeframe to post, but unfortunately, I still don't have confidence enough to make any specific promises.

We will be back up as soon as physically possible - both of our ISPs are working on the issues, including bringing an entirely new server online and copying the data across. With the sheer volume of data we host, it is not a quick process under the best of conditions...

Thanks for your patience."

How much data could they host? I just transferred 240 gigabytes of data from one server to another over a 100-baseT connection - it took the better part of a day. A day. ONE SINGLE day.

They couldn't possibly have that much data. There aren't that many titles in the database (compared to Muze or other much larger and longer-lived DBs).

Patience Jough, since we don't know exactly what is going, they may have even gotten hit with MYDoom.f and lost some files therefore being forced to rebuild. I have no doubt they are working to get the site back up as quickly as possible. When something like this happens I am grateful that I have multiple resources to draw on to manage my library, which is right now over 1260 titles.

I, too, and among the premium membership crowd, and am content on just waiting it out.

I love DVDPRo for the most part. I do use my own spreadsheet to track my dvds also. I have gone on the forum many times asking for advice and/or help. VERY RARELY have I received an answer via the forum or email. I am glad you enjoy the forums.
This thread was started and continued by members that like, use and are very involved with their lists. If we weren't we would not be up to 6 pages and we would not be agonizing over the time DVDPro is taking to get back up.
We will continue to wait and when DVDPro is running, we will have another thread saying how happy we are.
BUT we will also complain because of the lapsed time, and most importantly we enjoy the discussions and love the interaction of complaing.
Misey loves company and we are enjoying ourselves a bit.
After all we are also anal retentive and we use more than just DVDPRO. Our lists are in tact and we are only slightly inconvienced.

Some of this is absolutely hilarious!!!

I especially enjoyed reading about how long the site has been down. I don't know what problems some of you have been experiencing but you may want to check your own systems.

I was one of the last to post on the site before it went down FRIDAY. To be more precise it was LATE-MORNING on FRIDAY!!! I posted between 8:30- 9:30am Eastern time. Sometime after that, but before noon, the site went down.

BTW I'm the one who sent an e-mail to Skip asking if he knew what was up! Seems I have missplaced Ken's, and Jesse's, old e-mail addresses (doesn't do any good to send an e-mail to Intervocative if the site is down, don't ya know).

Anyway, thanks for the fun read folks! Just thought you would like to know when I was last able to post on their site! Have fun!!!

Dan W

Randy:

I will try to help you out with any questions you have with DVDPro anytime, just holler at me.

Bill:

Once the site comes back online you can see the new guidelines, in the meantime I am sure that myself, Roadkill, Draven or RC would be more than happy to help. Just drop me or us a note.

To all:

I have noted that several of you have made references to contributions which are in error. Speaking for myself, only, I do try to be as accurate as I can be when I make a contribution, and I am one of Profilers largest contributors. Sometimes data is incomplete when a fil is in pre-release but we try to correct the data as it becomes available. If I make a mistake in data entry please do NOT hesitate to drop me a note, I am always striving to be as accurate as I can be. Thanks gang, glad to have you all aboard and I look forward to seeing you in the Profiler forums when it wakes back up.

It's been more than a few minutes still.

Okay, well, it's no longer Monday here on the right coast and it's still down. I guess you can't use the "oh well it's the weekend and it's hard to get ahold of tech people on the weekends" line anymore.

It's been having problems for a whole week now. That some of you were able to access the site at various times last week doesn't mean they weren't temporarily down before then.

The IP address seems to have changed for DVDProfiler.com - that's good news, I think.

They're hosted at ServerBeach, which is a reliable dedicated server provider. I can't believe that they'd let the site be down two days, let alone more than four.

They're running Windows Server 2003/IIS - so it's not like they have some weirdo OS to install.

I don't get it, and what cheeses me off is that the company is being silent on the matter.

Are they EVER going to come back up or what? Their site still says they'll be back in a few minutes. It's said that for more than 4,300 minutes now.

Relax Jough. If they got slapped with a virus, we likely won't hear about it, most companies don't like to publicize that kind of thing.

Skip - read above. They claimed that they had a hardware issue and have had problems with their ISP.

I'm taking them at their word. I mean, otherwise they'd just be lying about the whole thing. So then we wouldn't know *what* to think.

You continuously bitching in this thread isn't going to make Profiler come back any sooner. Just thought I'd throw that in there.

You don't know what is happening, so stop pretending that you do. You keep posting as if your knowledge of servers makes you knowledgable about Intervocative's problem. It doesn't. DVD Profiler will be back up when it is ready to be back up, not when you think it should be.

Er...I for one am glad to hear that the "bad news" isn't what I feared and that they'll still continue to provide their great service. Here's to holding my breath! It's well worth it....
