With kudos to Sonja for a very imaginative story, let me say that if we have legal problems, it's news to me.
We have been adamant in our support of copyright protection, refusing to include spines in our cover images, and prohibiting bootleg titles in our database. We have no plans to eliminate cover scans from our premium features. The studios have been supportive of our efforts, with many pre-release titles added by studio employees directly.
Future enhancements to our copyright protection are planned, but they will not significantly impact owners of the original DVDs, and they're completely unrelated to our server issue.
The main reason for our extended downtime is that we were forced to have our old server shipped to us for repair before we could access the current data. That is done, and the copy/reinstalls are well under way.

Lance, our approval process is under constant internal review, and we've given much thought to opening it up to all users/an open committee/etc. For now, we use a staff of part time evaluators who are paid a commission per evaluation. As new evaluators are brought on and trained, we sometimes experience a dip in accuracy; we plan a double-check system as soon as we get 100% caught up in volume.
I apologize for the infrequency of my responses, but I am currently on a cruise, having left just before the site went down, and the Internet connection on board is spotty at best.

The 2nd title failed to add correctly. Both profile and image failed to download.

All right I have listened to both Josh and Jough just about long enough. You both need an attitude adjustment in a positive manner. Do us all a favor and stop using your copies of DVDProfiler; the user community will be better off without either of you.

Also, I just logged on to dvdprofiler web site and their message has changed. Here is the new message describing the reason for the down time is due to hardware problem:
DVDProfiler.com is temporarily unavailable. We experienced a serious hardware failure and are working to resolve the issue.
Our new servers are in place and in the process of configuration and restore. As portions are reinstated and tested, they will become available.
Restore of full functionality is expected by end of day Monday.
Thank you for your patience and concern. Please be assured we are taking the necessary steps to prevent future service interruptions.

Relief
When I saw the message on their web site that it would be up on Monday, there was a rush of relief. I have four DVD's waiting to be added. Don't tell me that collecting is not addictive.
All the negative comments in this thread are from irritated DVD junkies like myself.

From: You have moved into a dark place. It is pitch black. You are likely to be eaten by a grue.
I'm really only irritated because they lied about the severity of the outage, and weren't up front about it on their web site when it was back up (which was pretty quickly - the next day there was the temporary message).
The product is okay - not perfect but the latest versions have been much faster and less buggy. It's still the best DVD-centric database out there.

I paid for continuous receipt of higher-res images for the life of the product. If the product has died, fine. If IVS is going out of business, well, that's how it goes. But don't pretend that the money registered users paid was for nothing at all, and that we shouldn't expect the company to at the very least inform us as to why our service isn't working.
I never said that I signed anything with anyone. Don't put words into my mouth.
I'm glad you pointed that out, because you seem to be misusing them. I never said anything about the repairs not being temporary. That's an argument that exists only in your mind, EPKJ.
"Maintenance" means (according to the American Heritage Dictionary, but the meaning doesn't change much in other dictionaries) "The work of keeping something in proper condition; upkeep."
This is obviously NOT what happened here. They weren't performing maintenance at all (at least if their posted messages are to be believed) - they have been performing repairs.
The difference is not subtle.
Also, "a few minutes" means:
1. Amounting to or consisting of a small number.
2. Being more than one but indefinitely small in number.
It's been more than 11,000 minutes that they've been completely down so far (and they're still not back up).
Would you consider 11,000 a few? Only if you do not understand the meaning of the word.
Words have meaning, and your pedantry and illogical allegiance to IVS doesn't change their meaning.

This thread is getting long, and it looks like the situation is on its way to normalizing, so closing thread.
EPKJ, from just a quick browsing of this thread, it seems like you're being unnecessarily argumentative and hostile to other members. I suggest taking a gentler tone.
