Re: Dollar Tree DVDs

A new Dollar Tree opened up Sat. You would think that this would be a "best foot forward" situation. Imagine,no cans of soup opened up and spilled on the floor(well, one kid was able to break a toy while mumbling "Bwoke"over and over while visibly not scared of any consequences);no bags of chips rifled into for a free sample,no six pack of anything, now a five pack;not one bottl eof liquid detergent spilled over boxes of powder detergent-yet.Hell,every employee and customer appeared not in need of a bath and a note from the doctor to lay off the high fructose corn syrup. It included a frozen food section as well as refrigerated cabinet area, something I had never seen in a dollar store. Not the biggest Dollar Tree I have been in but neatly stocked with what one would assume the most of the best stuff they can muster to sell during the fourth quarter of 2010 And that includes those deceptive boxes of candy holding half of a bagged version of the same stuff a few feet away. All for a buck, and some of it 79 cents for grand opening. And not one DVD.Not one PD,slashed, floating or other sitting on a counter waiting for a good home.

Re: Dollar Tree DVDs

I finally made it over to my friendly neighborhood Dollar Tree and they had probably about 100 used DVDs. The only title I recognized was "Hotel New Hampshire." Everything else looked like direct-to-video or made -or-cable stuff. I'm thinking someone hit it before me and cleaned them out of all the recognizable titles. It would be a gold mine for a reseller. I should have acted more quickly.

Actually, unless a used DVD is really rare, it is practically worthless, especially in "rental" condition.

Picked up about 12 titles. The most recognizable is
AVP Aliens Vs. Predators
Hard Candy

Hard Candy was the worst of the 12. Looked like someone used it as a coaster. AVP was surprisingly one of the best. Go figure. 10 of 12 discs were not bad for rental. 2 of them (Hard Candy and Enron) were the worst and may have trouble in playback. Enron was the one I was most anxious to see, so I hope it's good.

Most of the titles I got are not worth a buck used, especially since it is a crap shoot about their condition. I sometimes buy used discs at pawn shops and always check the condition. Most of these I would have put back (I'm pretty picky, even for a buck), so it's a crap shoot on whether they are worth it or not.

Re: Dollar Tree DVDs

My local Dollar Tree store didn't have any DVDs except for the public domain ones they've always had, which they moved to the electronics aisle of the store. There were unopened boxes all over the place so it's possible they may have them just not displayed yet.

That Goodwill truck may have been picking up fixtures. And it may not have necessarily been a donation. Somehow,I could never imagine "Hollywood Video" and "donation " in the same sentence. Goodwill may have purchased them. And if DT is selling PV DVDs from HV,how cheap do you think they got them for in auction? I'll guess a nickel or less apiece.

Re: Dollar Tree DVDs

Still no luck at the few local stores I've hit. Which is annoying since there are actually a few titles that have been listed that I'd like to have.

Re: Dollar Tree DVDs

I've been to about 5 Dollar Trees in my area (central PA, Lebanon and Lancaster) and 2 of the 5 had old Movie Gallery DVDs. Picked up 4 at one and another 5 at another. Most of the titles had multiples of each, not a wide selection. picked up:
The Paper Chase
2010
20 Years After
The Weight of Water

at the first one, the five at the second one were nowhere near as memorable, guilty b movies pleasure. But, I picked up about 8 packs of the 40 double sided dvd sleeves that some of them sell. Hard to find

Re: Dollar Tree DVDs

Visited one of my outlying DTs and found a smattering of Hollywood Video used items. Bought Three Days of Rain, The Trojan Horse, Speed & Angels, and Atlantic Records: The House that Ahmet Built (new). Other good items that I already had--Ike and 2010. Will have to check out some other locations.

Re: Dollar Tree DVDs

There are about 5 Dollar Trees where we live (Southern Oregon) and ALL of them seem to have the same titles which happen to be documentaries (can't remember the titles but one had baby dolls on the cover and another one was about some surfing family) and something like a cartoon called "Paprika". They literally had dozens and dozens. Hopefully actual movies will show up.

Was the baby-doll cover one "Bubble"? That was an interesting independent film from Steven Soderbergh using all unknowns and a lot of non-actors. I remember it was released simultaneously on DVD, in theaters and on pay-per-view and might have been the first such movie to do that.

I'll buy that for a dollar!

Yes! It looked like a documentary to me.

Last night went to a different location and found (and bought):

Mammoth - Creature feature made for the Sci-Fi channel.
Carriers - already watched it and it bored me.
Party Girl

ALL discs in great condition though.

Re: Dollar Tree DVDs

Found "Maxed Out", a documentary on America's credit card culture the other day at DT. I actually picked it up since I remembered reading a review of it here on DVDTalk awhile ago.

It was the only thing that stood out in the oddball selection of foreign films, documentaries, and made-for-TV biopics.

Re: Dollar Tree DVDs

Saw quite a few Echo Bridge DVDs family stuff with Dove approval. Grabbed a Christmas film with Jason Alexander that also had a cd. Several of these were 2 films, not bad for a buck! Took pics with my new phone, but they are not there, so sadly can't say what other titles were there....

Re: Dollar Tree DVDs

I saw some movies from some company I never heard of before mixed in with the really old Digiview leftovers. Same types of case too. Nothing good imo.
