Re: Big Lots Update Part 3
Just got back from another Big Lots run. As mentioned in an earlier post I also found alot of good Funimation Anime titles. I bought the following for $3 each:
Afro Samurai (Samuel L. Jackson) - Spike Version
Robotech - The Shadow Chronicles (2-Disc Collector's Edition)
Tsubasa The Movie/Holic The Movie - Clamp Double Feature
Tsubasa - Seeds Of Revolution - Clamp
School Rumble - Vol. 5
Witchblade - Vol. 3
Beck Vol. 1 & 2
Not bad for $21 + tax. Wish they had been out on Sunday so I could have saved the extra 20%.

Just got back from a trip to Tallahassee, FL and the BL on Capitol Circle and Apalachee PWKY had a decent selection with a newly added cardboard display on top of the DVD bin. Nothing new for me though. My BL in Thomasvile, GA has had no new DVDs in a month.

There was a massive restock in the Poway, CA store today. All Universal and MGM titles.

I don't believe they do. It seems like the Universal titles used to have gouges, but now don't. I know I passed on Psycho remake because of this but later picked it up w/o the gouge. As always with Big Lots YMMV.

Picked up Greedy.
Also picked up The Paper - a GREAT underrated movie starring Michael Keaton, Glenn Close, Marisa Tomei, and a ton of other people. Unfortunately, its Full Frame - the ONLY way it's ever been released
(Same with Fierce Creatures... wtf Universal??!?)

One of the local BL's got a big restock with a mixture of Sony, Focus, Universal, & HBO. I was surprised to find among the HBO's "Cher Live In Concert - Believe Tour 1999" (keepcase).

My local store said nothing this coming week. The only dvd shipment that store has received in almost 2 months are the junky public domain $1 dvd's & junky public domain $6 boxsets both last week.

You know it looks to me like the sort of titles Big Lots had been bringing in the last couple years are now ending up at FYE, Oldies.com, Deep Discount & more similar. Wonder if the studios are getting more from these other sources then BL is willing to pay?

Re: Big Lots Update Part 3
Along with some of the other Universal titles previously mentioned on the thread, I found a copy of Spielberg's "Sugarland Express", "Madigan" with Richard Widmark and "The Best of Baretta" containing 3 episodes of the Robert Blake series.

I have a feeling they're trying to clear warehouses to make room for blu-ray--or perhaps just to make SOME money off the stuff instead of none.
Plus, I imagine the prices are similar for everyone on the wholesale side of things--and if anything, I doubt BL has the bargaining clout to have the lowest price on the stuff.

It seems more like the studios are dumping every copy of these titles to anyone who will buy them, to me, especially because it's the SAME titles *EVERYWHERE*...

I've noticed the same thing. I tend to think it's a case of wanting to clear out slow moving titles to make SOME money as you've indicated. I doubt it's to make room for Blu-ray as sales numbers indicate it has, at best, 10% of overall sales with DVD accounting for the rest. Even current projections don't look that good for Blu with a projected ~70% penetration by 2017. Yes, there are *some* titles that have ~30-40% sold in the Blu-ray format but event then the top 20 still only garner ~15% of the total DVD market. Most consumers are quite happy with their standard def DVD players/media and will most likely not make the move to Blu-ray until players are widely available for under ~75 and disk prices drop to current std. DVD pricing. Some market analysts predict that VOD will take over before Blu-ray gains that ~70% share in 2017. That'll happen only if a better infrastructure (broadband over power lines) is "perfected" and put in place for delivery as the current bandwidth most people get will not support VOD well.

Re: Big Lots Update Part 3
Actually, I have the same stance on Blu in objective terms--even setting aside my own complete disinterest (which is pretty darn complete), it's obviously not doing enough for that--but I wouldn't put it past studios to try to push it harder by selling off all of old catalog for new stuff and trying to switch maybe those titles over, or even just by having more. But you're probably right. That's just the pessimist in me with one eye over my shoulder toward them screwing over those of us who don't want a bunch of ugly-looking blue cases littering shelves and threatening to need to replace existing copies.
Nothing out here either...didn't even bother with a few of my usual stores while going to all of the closing CCs in the area as there just wasn't anything new...

If B.R. is only getting 10% of sales with DVD at 90%; I find it amazing the amount of shelf space stores are giving to B.R.

Re: Big Lots Update Part 3
Stores are going to push it for the same reason media companies are: higher price point. It's better for them all around.
And of course they need variety to encourage people to see enough to give in and go for the format.
It is not a secret of actually comparable market shares. 10% is (roughly, of course) accurate.
