Re: Barnes And Noble Coupon Thread Part 2
Has anyone received any unexplained charges from B&N? I was just checking my credit card account today and noticed a $13.91 charge from B&N.com had posted. Problem is I have not ordered anything since April 2. I have a couple of ship to home orders but they are already paid for. I checked all my accounts and emails but nothing from B&N about the charge. I went through my order history of one account and noticed I did make a purchase for $13.91 back on February 11 but I used a Groupon to pay for it. I'm wondering if B&N has charged me again for that order. I guess I'm going to have to call customer service to get an answer. Now I'm starting to worry I might see more mysterious charges pop up.
Update: I called customer service and they can't give me any answers for the charge. It's not showing up in their records. I guess I may have dispute this with my credit card company.

Re: Barnes And Noble Coupon Thread Part 2
After a lengthy conversation with a CSR I didn't get any answers what the charge was for. She thought maybe it was a temporary charge but I kept telling her it wasn't. The only thing the charge matches up with was for an order I placed for Bambi back in February. I used a $10 coupon combined with a Groupon to pay the remaining balance. I never received anything from B&N that the Groupon was ever canceled if that is the reason for the charge.
I asked for a refund but the CSR refused to issue one unless they can see the statement with the charge. I wanted to talk to her supervisor but they were not available at the time. Supposed to get a call back later but doubt I will get one. Probably will have to call again.

We had a mysterious $40? charge about 2 months ago from B&N. It was under the wife's CC but no order in either of our accounts. I insisted she get to the bottom of it with customer service but I don't think she ever did (She was exchanging emails, and nobody does anything via email). She tends to dodge conflict with company customer service.
I'll have to remind her about it and see if she ever got a refund.

Re: Barnes And Noble Coupon Thread Part 2
Yeah, just last week I had a mystery $20 show up.
It matched nothing I had open in either BN account I have and I couldn't find a recent order (actual, hacked or accidental), as my last two BN purchases were in store with my debit card.
I didn't bother to call BN, I just disputed the charge with my credit card company. The charge was reversed and credited the next day.

Re: Barnes And Noble Coupon Thread Part 2
I called customer service again and seemed to at least got a better informed CSR this time around. It does appear if it is related to my Bambi order and the Groupon. She said for some reason they rejected the gift card and charged my credit card for the balance. She asked if I used a Groupon and used 2 or more on the order. I made sure never to use more than one per order at most, so I know that wasn't what happened. She did notice I used the Groupon on a second order for a CD. When I checked the order I could see the CD used the remaining Groupon balance, but I was charged $0.75 on my CC to cover the remainder. The CD and Bambi orders used the $20 Groupon. I see no reason for the charge. Even if they canceled the Groupon it doesn't make sense why they would let the $6 CD order go through with the Groupon and reject the $14 Bambi blu-ray order. The CSR is supposed to review it further and let me know what they find in a couple of days. I'm not sure what's going to happen with this mess. I thought I was finished with this Groupon fiasco.

After going through my records and trying to refresh my memory what may have happened I think I figured it out. Looks like I may have had a Groupon canceled before Bambi shipped, but part of it went through with the CD order. I placed both orders on the same date, but the CD order processed quickly since it was in stock. Bambi was a pre-order and did not ship until around the end of February. By the time Bambi shipped the remaining Groupon may have been canceled. I did receive refunds from Groupon on 4 gift cards, but I did manage to use one of the four before they were canceled. I never was sure which GC got canceled I used. Now I know!

However I'm not pleased with how B&N handled this almost 2 months later with no explanation. Seems if the GC was canceled by the time Bambi was released they could have said something then instead of waiting to surprise me with a unexplained delayed charge.

I would not be surprised if the 2 instances above were also cancelled groupons. Both are exact dollar amounts and in increments of 10 which was the value of the groupons.

However B&N would probably charge you on the value of the gift card and not what you paid for it. If you purchased $20 of merchandise that is what B&N is going to charge on your credit or debit card.

If BN is doing catch-up bookkeeping on long shipped Groupon orders, it needs to be communicated to the customer prior to the charge.
Without said notice, I'll hand it over to the credit card company to deal with.

That very well may be; I haven't had the time/desire to do the research as I haven't had a Groupon order completed since early February.

I'm still considering taking this up with my card card company because of how poorly B&N handled this. My order status page shows it was paid for with a gift card and no where does it say it was declined for payment. Because they waited so long I don't even have the option to return it, and also have lost any chance of getting in on any other potentially better deals that were available during the release week.

Re: Barnes And Noble Coupon Thread Part 2
I was thinking it was groupons used on an order larger than the value of the groupons. As an example: The groupon value was $20 so if you placed an order that was $28 your CC was charged $8. Then they cancel the groupon and you owe them $20 so they then charge the card that amount.

I say just dispute it with your credit card and be done with it. If they can't even explain the charge to you, they'll never be able to explain it to the credit card company, and your chargeback will go through with no fuss, no muss.

B&N has the new Ernie Kovacs Collection on sale for for 41.99, 40% off. I used a coupon (thanks Laser) to save even more. I know you get a bonus DVD if you order the set directly from Shout Factory but they are charging $55 plus 6.50 for shipping and I couldn't justify the nearly $30 difference for one DVD. I hope I don't regret that later.

I went ahead and filed a dispute today since B&N failed to contact me as promised with any formal explanation for the charge.

Do any of you have a Safeway nearby? I just got the new circular.
If you buy 50 dollars worth of Barnes and Noble giftcards, you get a ten dollar coupon to use on your next grocery visit. Good 4/27 to 5/10
Might also be good at Safeway affiliated stores like Vons, randalls,Tom Thumb, carrs, genuardi or pavillion. Ymmv on these. also good on starbucks, Nordstrom, Kohls, JCP and Macy cards

Yeah, it's sort of a pain in the ass to have to go through your records from months ago to try and remember everything that happened. B&N certainly didn't help.

I filed a dispute with them yesterday since I never heard back from B&N about it. The only contact I did get from B&N was a email for a survey about my customer service experience. I'm looking forward to filling that out when I have some spare time.

LASER, nail them on the survey and let them know how they treated you.

^
I took the customer service evaluation survey tonight and grilled them how they handled the whole affair. Ironically while I was taking the survey I received a email response that was due 3 days ago about the charge and why they did it. It was because a groupon was devalued. They should have done that the day they charged my credit instead of saying nothing, and letting me get surprised when I was checking my credit card account last week. I'm not sure if there is a statue of limitations a company can charge you, but it looked like B&N was waiting until the last minute to quietly slip the charge in almost 2 months later. I probably would have accepted it if they were up front about it in the beginning explaining why.
