a) Yes it would be illegal and b) There are plenty of reports of exactly that happening in the clubs subforum -- it's rare but it definitely happens which is what he meant by "a small percentage."

You don't know what you're talking about. Here's a small sample of the dozens of threads in the Clubs subforum on this topic.

Are you guys sick of getting re-wrapped DVD's from CH ??

Repackaged DVDs? Missing Inserts!

I know CH uses used dvds but this is crap.

where did these repacks come from?

CH shrink wrapping opened DVDs?

Worst re-wrapped DVD experience!!

Until someone reports receiving a used dvd from dv2, this conversation should be confined to the regular columbia house club threads.

Why's that? You think Columbia House uses different stock with it's DV2 customers than with it's other club customers? That would be odd indeed.

I will agree with you that it doesn't have anything to do with DVD bargains, but it is responsive to the question asked regarding if the DVDs were the same as in stores. With that though, I think the topic is exhausted.

From CH webpage:

5. Are Columbia House's DVDs as good as the ones from a store?

Yes. Our DVDs are manufactured the same way as those you'd buy in a store. They come to you factory-sealed [snip]

Or, CH is run by liars... Of all the alleged cases of someone getting a used DVD from CH has *one* of those "victims" complained to the FTC or BBB?

So you'd prefer to believe that every one of the huge number of DVD Talk members, including me, who've allegedy received resealed DVDs are liars because the CH website says otherwise and based on your limited personal experience, huh? Exactly how many CH memberships have you had? I'd guess no more than 10, and probably much fewer.

Exactly what was the response of CH when you complained about their supplying you with used merchandise, rather than the new product you paid for? You *did* file complaints with the FTC and BBB about CH's illegal practice, right? (Curiously, you fail to note the "hugh" number of posters that deny that CH does what you claim, or provide reasonably explanations of why this could occasionally happen...dishonest customers, factory mishandling, etc).

I've never complained about the repacks either to CH, here, or anywhere else because they don't bother me since the product is otherwise in good condition.

Since (1) you didn't answer my question, (2) this has absoluetly nothing to do with bargains, and (3) I don't think this constitutes a crime on CH's part, I'm done responding to you here. If you think there's any point in continuing this discussion you can send me a PM, or post in an appropriate thread in the clubs subforum. Like I said before, once you've had a little more experience with CH you'll probably see it differently.

Your browser is using cookies from your CH account (DV2 is still using CH servers for now until they get their main site up and running). Clear your cookies and then try to logon to DV2. I use both, so it's easiest for me to use Firefox to logon to one site and Explorer to log on to the other.

Thanks for the suggestions. I cleared all cookies and restarted my PC, then used the link from the email and still couldn't get to DV2. I wonder where CH stores the site info.

CH updates their site on weekdays, so problems frequently occur on these days. Try again on Monday.

You have to go to http://go.columbiahouse.com As soon as you do you will get a popup asking for a code if you have one. Enter the code and now you get to choose 2 titles.

CH DVDs New or Used?

StanS,

What Yakuza Bengoshi says is true. About 1/3 of the DVDs that I have received from CH have been opened previously and were probably returns, being sold as new.

If you complain to CH, they will allow you to return the DVD. If you return too many DVDs, you will be banned from membership.

If you do not mind receiving a used DVD in relatively good condition, there is no problem. However, calling them NEW is debatable.
