Yeah, I got that. Just still a strange strip to include with that title. Not as generic as "Action", "Fun" , or "All American" titled comics.

Appears when Mandrake wasn't the star of the cover, he was either mentioned or there is a picture of him. Just odd choices to add under that moniker.

Looking at the various covers, looks like Dagwood/Blondie took over this title like Superman did with Action and Batman did with Detective.

I had it too, along with the individual Star Wars comics that adapted the movie (with Al Williamson art!).

Re: Comic Book Cover Of The Day

That was right at the end of the Silver Age released in 1969. I could just have a whole thread posting all the wacky comic book covers (especially DC) from the Silver Age.

Those covers could definitely be eye-catchers, but the stories were rarely as good and even sometimes completely unrelated.

I don't remember the below comic at all but looks pretty damn cool.

Damn, I don't remember that title at all, and I was actively buying comics off the spinner racks in 1980.

Re: Comic Book Cover Of The Day

I know Time Warp only because a couple years ago I decided to collect every single $1 comic DC published in the Bronze Age. Fairly sophisticated, nice art with more of an adult bent for a DC/Marvel book of the era. Doesn't seem to have sold in big numbers because high-quality copies are scarce today. Not really much demand for it in today's market from what I can see.

I remember having issues #1 of Time Warp but cannot remember a single story in it. Or maybe I can. Was there a story about someone letting a group of deformed people die and then their guilt causes them to believe they are now deformed? Or was that another book like House of Mystery etc?

Possibly, it's an anthology book. Edgy sci-fi stories for the most part.

I checked my DC Infinite subscription and they are not available on it. Just FYI. Gonna check my digital bootlegs and see if I have them there.

Anybody know if the stories are very interesting or just run of the mill? Same question for the art inside.

I'm curious as well. If I ever stumble upon a cheap, reader copy in the wild I'll pick it up.

My friend sent me this, wondering what the heck was going on. I can't explain the dude's attire, but thought it was weird enough to share here!

Re: Comic Book Cover Of The Day

I’m not sure if that character is Phantasmo or Rex, King of the Deep. At first, it seemed more likely to be the latter, given the underwater setting, and it appears he did wear only red trunks, which made me think some color fading maybe took place, but then that didn’t explain the bright red price box.

If it’s Phantasmo, though, I’m kinda sensing a theme. Somebody must’ve been getting their jollies :

Also, per Wikipedia:

It has been noted that, clad in nothing but golden shorts, boots and a transparent cape, Phantasmo often appears to be nearly naked during his adventures.

Less than mint copies of Time Warp can be found fairly cheaply, though few copies circulate compared to say Batman or Superman issues from the era. It wasn't a big seller.

Going off memory, I believe Michael Kaluta did several of the covers.

I just looked it up and apparently Kaluta did all the covers. That alone is a good reason for me to pick these up, as I'm a fan of his work.

Re: Comic Book Cover Of The Day

I find it interesting that Time Warp was putting the names of artists & writers on the covers back in 1980. Was this to entice superhero readers to try something different from recognizable people? An aping of sci-fi mags of the time? Or was this not as unusual as I think?

I think it was a bid enticing comics to non-superhero consumers who were into science fiction.

I couldn't find a quick picture of them all laid out together but very cool set of connected covers.
