Ok, that's just odd... Some people seem to love it, but as an ex-Spidey reader I hate it, it seems even more now like another Marvel "temporary status quo change" and it certainly won't bring me back. But I'll give it this, it's at least interesting.

Haha, Spidey still sucks.

For those who want to know:

Spoiler:
Doctor Octopus has switched brains with Spider-Man, just as Ock’s body with Peter’s mind inside dies.

Marvel is trying to keep sites from talking about it, including CBR. Mods are having a field day over there.

All New X-Men was interesting. I'll at least pick up a few more issues.

Re: Marvel Relaunches In October With Marvel NOW

Didn't they do that in the 1990s as well? I vaguely recall a storyarc where
Spoiler:
Vulture switched bodies with Peter. I think it was right around the time his parents came back (and were later revealed to be robots).

Re: Marvel Relaunches In October With Marvel NOW

That does seem like an
Spoiler:
80's/90's stock comic book plot
, so I'm sure you're right.

Spoiler:

Wait, so are they cancelling all the Spidey books and just having one? Or is this going to be going on in all books, including New Avengers, FF, or wherever else Spidey is in the current universe?

Ah, the robot parents. Man Spidey's been through a lot: robot parents, Clone Saga, One More Day, 5 million Venom spawns, quick-aging Stacy/Osbourne illegitimate children, etc. And I could have sworn Aunt May died and came back a dozen times already.

I was partially right. I just looked through my back issues and
Spoiler:
Vulture didn't actually switch bodies with Peter. He just stole his youth.

Well, this also happened in Ultimate FF (which I remember just because it was included in the Zomnibus):

Spoiler:
Reed Richards and Dr. Doom switch bodies for a while

One of the League of Extraordinary Gentlemen: Century books recently used this gimmick. The villain stayed alive for a century by body swapping with someone younger right before his older body dies.

I read this spoiler (obviously, if I'm quoting it), and I'm not sure to know if you're kidding or not. I was thinking of jumping onboard as a lead-in to Superior Spider-Man, but if what you said isn't just messing around, then that's the most ridiculous thing I could even imagine. I don't want to poke around to see if it's true or not because I don't want anything spoiled!

I always think about the inane stuff that Superman is put through by DC and then look at a character like Spider-Man's recent history, thinking that DC isn't so bad in retrospect.

Ya know, I read it, and while the idea is insane, reading it made me think, "Huh; that's pretty interesting," and now I'm actually considering going back and picking up most of Slott's run on the series. At least they're taking a risk, story-wise, with the character.

I was in the shop the other day and there was 1 copy left so I picked it up. And I liked it. I couldn't believe it. The execution was pretty good, and I'm curious how it plays out.

Indestructible Hulk #1 was really good. This is the first time Ive liked Hulk since Planet Hulk. Waid writing again is great, and its a new spin on an old story. Working with SHIELD, reminds me of when Banner worked with Pantheon.

Iron Man was just OK. It does come with bonus Greg Land guessing game though. Unfortunately Tony doesn't looks like Downey which is a missed opportunity if Land is going to trace anyway. The story feels too much like Invincible #1, with tech on the loose and Tony must get it back.

Re: Marvel Relaunches In October With Marvel NOW

I admit it does sound interesting. I always considered
Spoiler:
Doc Ock to be more of Spidey's arch-villain than the Green Goblin. Also, the "superior" in the title makes sense with regard to how Otto sees himself.

But it's not so interesting because
Spoiler:
I think it would be more interesting to see Doc Ock living out Peter's life with all that's happened: Aunt May's passing, Peter trying to balance life as a husband and as a crimefighter, Peter's own guilt over Gwen's death, as well as mixed feelings about his best friend who, in the end, died to save him, etc. But all that is out the window.

I wonder why Doc Ock has retractable claws? Was really hoping for Miguel O'Hara's return but that would bring in too much sci-fi I suppose.

Spoiler:
So if Doc Ock has Peter's memories, does that mean Peter has Doc Ock's memories? So does that mean Peter now has ingrained into his mind the images of his aunt hooking up with Doc Ock and having wild tentacle sex?

Yeah, but death in comics has been a revolving door ever since the 90s. A big name like Peter Parker isn't going to be dead for more than a year or two, especially with the movie sequel coming.

Yeah, I think Slott's a good enough writer, where he can take the bad ideas handed down from the editorial staff and make them into entertaining stories. But yeah, these "ideas" are all terrible. They should just let someone with Slott's talent go hog wild and write what they want, rather than some EVENT.

I know, ive been reading long enough.

Just read Thor God of Thunder #1. A pretty good start, and it takes place across 3 different times in Thor's life.

Re: Marvel Relaunches In October With Marvel NOW

Just read Spidey 699 where the trick was revealed

Heres some cut and paste spoilers from CBR

Spoiler:
Parker-in-Ock's body's goes into cardiac arrest, Dr.s revive him and Peter is left to ponder how Otto pulled it off.

He worries about the havok Ock could do in his body, such as destroying the Avengers, putting the moves on MJ, and offing Jay Sr. He then figures that if Ock has access to his memories, then the reverse is true, so he sifts through Ock's memories to trace the moment of switch. Among the vignettes he experiences are Ock's father abusing him, the accident that gave him his arms, Spidey beating him, and his near marriage to May which he quickly blechs away. Cut to the doctor announcing Ock's terminal condition, the octobot army assembling, and then his own memory of using Ock's control helmet in front of MJ during Spider-Island. AND THEN HE FIGURES IT OUT: The helmet gave Ock access to more of his mind everytime he used it. So now he realized there's a one octobot out there, the golden one, programmed to sneak on him and do the switch right after the Goblin War as he was ignoring his spider-sense.

BAMM!

So now he wants to return the favor. With Ock's body, he activates the gold 'bot. Meanwhile, next cell, Connors in Lizard's body reveals to Ock his true predicament as a way of relieving his mind by way of confession since Ock won't be able to tell anyone as he'll die soon. Since it's Peter inside, he's shocked, and wonders if it's a sham or not. But back to the 'bot: it initiates one last program according to the ptorocol Ock assigned it: a call to his fellow supervillain community with a generous offer for a special mission, before the 'bot runs out of juice. As Peter waits with trepidation, Hydroman busts into the Raft and brings Trapster and Scorpion with him (there's a nice reference to Spidey/Torch #2 and how Paste Pot Pete adapted his new nom de crime, by the way). They bust out Ock and ask him whom else to rescue to recreate the Sinister Six. Peter rejects Smythe outright, hesitates on Conner, and passes Morbius, saying the four of them will do for now. As evil Pete (Trapster) secure good Pete (trapped in Ock's body, yeah I know bad pun) to his portable life support system), they assume the mission is to capture Spidey dead or alive. But Peter insist Spidey has to be captured alive.

So, in order to save himself, Peter has to rely on a posse of villains, and hope they don't harm any innocents in the process.

Re: Marvel Relaunches In October With Marvel NOW

Amazing Spider-Man 700 spoilers:

http://www.newsarama.com/comics/spid...-revealed.html

Spoiler:

Peter Parker

SPOILER ALERT! As outright said in the headline, we'll be discussing MAJOR SPOILERS for Amazing Spider-Man #700 and the future of Spider-Man here! PLEASE do yourself a favor and read ASM #700 before reading this article!

In Marvel Comics' first ever 700th issue of a comic today, the end of Amazing Spider-Man sees major changes to the characters of Spider-Man, Peter Parker, and Otto Octavius.

Call him Peter Octavius or Otto Parker, as a hybrid of sorts will make it out of Amazing Spider-Man #700 to become the new Superior Spider-Man [preview pages seen in this article] in the Marvel NOW! relaunch of the title in January, 2013.

The final battle between these age-old enemies is fought rather non-traditionally. After a vast mind-swapping scheme by Otto, better known as Doctor Octopus or simply Doc Ock, the big fight sees Peter Parker in Otto's body and vice-versa. However, both minds have left a lasting impression, and that's where the last punch is truly thrown by Peter as he lies dying in Otto's frail body.

Peter Parker's life flashes not just before his own eyes, but as Otto has full access to Peter's memories and is mind-linked once again, Pete forces him to see all his major, life-changing and philosophy-forming moments. In a crash course on Spider-Man history, Octavius doesn't just see moments like Uncle Ben and Gwen Stacy's deaths, he experiences and feels them. He sees exactly what it was like to overcome adversity repeatedly and finally learns: "With great power must also come great responsibility."

Thus, Otto promises to not only live as Peter lived, but actually become a better, and yes, "Superior" Spider-Man.

"This is Moriarty in the head of Sherlock. This is Prince John inside of Robin Hood. This is the greatest villain inside the body of the greatest hero and trying to do good," writer Dan Slott told USA Today of the new status quo. He promises you won't simply see a Peter Parker that has Otto overtones though - this is Otto Octavius in Peter's body trying to figure out how to be a better hero than he ever was, and it won't be easy. "That road of salvation and stepping up and doing the right thing, it's more interesting to see it from a character who has to fight his basic nature to do that."
Otto will face former allies like the Sinister Six, while also trying to live Peter's life outside the costume better than his nemesis. A renewed relationship with Mary Jane Watson as well as a stricter focus of intellect at Horizon Labs are just two of the changes seen in Otto/Peter as the new Spider-Man, and readers don't have to wait until January 9, 2013 when the first issue of Superior hits for that dynamic, as Avenging Spider-Man #15.1, also in stores today, shows Otto as Spidey in some of these situations.

Reader reaction, as shown by Dan Slott himself on his twitter feed, will be mixed, with readers ranging from everlasting thanks to immediate drop of all things Marvel, but the writer doesn't just acknowledge that fact and challenge, he embraces it.

"He had to be a hero in his own eyes, and on some level Otto Octavius is facing that struggle not with Spider-Man's world but with the readership," Slott says to USA Today.

"How do you get more Peter Parker than that? Now the readers think he's a menace. That's exciting. On a meta level, that is Spider-Man."

Of course, seasoned comic book readers will note that while Peter Parker sure seemed to die in the body of Otto Octavius, the mind-swap nature of the entire storyline, as well as Peter's lingering memories in his own body, certainly gives Marvel an "out" to return to the original status quo at some point in the story. It wouldn't even entirely be the first time such a thing happened at Marvel Comics, let alone in the comic book world. When the X-Men character Rogue had absorbed Carol Danvers, Ms. Marvel's powers, memories, and personality, Danvers came with it, fighting Rogue for control of her own body before eventually being transfered back into her own.

Whether a scenario like that is in the future for the Superior Spider-Man, for the time being, Peter Parker is dead and Otto Octavius is now the web-slinger.
