What are people's thoughts on these? Do they hold up well or are they more for nostalgia fans only? I didn't grow up watching the Hammer films and honestly have not seen many as an adult.

I also see that there is some mention about a mistake on the aspect ratio of four of the films in this collection. Good price though.

I ma in the same boat as I have not seen many Hammer films either. I am on the fence myself since it would be a blind buy for me. Plus I would have to add another $20 of stuff to get free shipping.

It's a mixed bag for more casual horror fans. A couple of the films are real gems but it's definitely intended for fans of Hammer-style horror. You either like the costume drama aspects and gothic atmosphere, or you don't.

OK... that makes me mad! I've had my copy for *two whole weeks!* I'm considering ordering it again and returning the original "just because" Amazon won't match their own price, like BB and WM do, for 30 days past a sale. I'd still come out ahead a couple of $$.

It depends on just what type of horror film you like. Most of these are "old school" gothic type horrors. Nothing overly graphic and a couple are psychological horrors. While some of these were being produced when I was growing up I never watched them as I felt they were "lame rip-offs of the Universal horror films" and truly didn't watch most of them until the original DVD set was released. I don't know that you'd find that "lost gem" here but there *are* a few very good, and interesting, films in the group. One of those is Hammer's *only* werewolf film, Curse of the Werewolf. While I'm not a huge fan of this one it *is* a different take on the mythology and has good acting, sets, etc. Hammer's version of Phantom of the Opera is also good. I'd say as good or better than Universal's version. IMHO the two best films in the set are Brides of Dracula and Evil of Frankenstein. I just finished watching my set and enjoyed them again (makes the 3rd time I know for sure that I've seen these 8 films). Still... I'd not say *any* of the films in the set are "essential" unless you're a fan of Hammer Horror films.

Yes, the first 4 are not in their "correct" aspect ratios. All 4 should really be 1.66:1 (according to DVD Savant) but were commonly shown in WS leading people to say they should all 4 be 1.85:1. Night Creatures and Phantom of the Opera were 2.0:1 on the DVDs and I don't recall anyone complaining. Those 4 are presented 2.0:1 - a *bit* tight on Brides... and Curse... in some spots but not as bad as some would have you believe. A few times in each, framing looks a bit tight but, IMHO, it's nothing egregious. DVD Savant did a good write up on the original DVD release. It's worth a read if you think you're interested in the set.

Thanks for the opinions and info. I decided to pass. I tend to like my horror sleazy (that makes it rewatchable for me). These sound like I would be one and done. Ya'll saved me 30 bucks! Thanks!
