The I Am Legend/Constantine/V for Vendetta/Blade 4-film BD is $3.74.

If I didn't already own 3 out of those 4 I'd totally get it myself.

That's dead already. Assuming you saw the Slickdeals post that was an affiliate site selling those through eBay.

No, it was live when I posted it. I saw it through BD.com's lowest price deals.

Ouch.

Some people have different standards for reviews. It's really about expectations.

To clarify -- those are different reviewers opinions of the whole release and not an assessment of the variations within the disc.

There is such a huge disparity in the reviews you wonder about if it's disc variations or it just looks incredibly different on different equipment setups or if different people watching the same exact disc on identical setups really have that wide of a disagreement over the PQ/AQ.

Depending on just *who* and *where* the review is I'd have to wonder if systems are actually set up properly. There are so many factors in getting a "good" result. Certain settings actually work against you when you'd think they'd help *but* on some occasions they actually do. I'd question those complaining about excessive DNR to ask if they have their set/player set up with "noise canceling" (i.e. Soap Opera effect) turned on. I have a few discs where that setting actually helps but for most it produces unwanted artifacts. The sad part is it's usually defaulted to "on" for most sets.

You can look at the comparison on caps-a-holic. When I was looking at it, before I read any reviews, I could tell it was DNR'd and I'm no where near an expert on that. I don't know how it looks in motion though.

Looking at the comparisons, neither version looks particularly good. The Blue Moon has lots of noise/grain (can't tell if it's natural grain or just noise) but the remastered is soft - very soft at times. It has a "smoother" image but I wouldn't say it's "better."

Re: Amazon discounts and deals on Blu-ray

With the caveat I have not actually seen either Blu-ray, the following is my take having closely looked at the aforementioned screenshot comparisons.

The new transfer shows less filtering and the movie's softer, more appropriately film-like appearance. The color grading is far improved as well. What people think is grain in the original transfer is actually evidence of leftover noise from the crude filtering tools used back in the day. It's far too structured and regular to be classic celluloid grain.

This newly-remastered transfer is far closer to what the negative may have looked like upon release. Sharpening and filtering often gives the false impression of more definition to casual observers. Far less of that processing has been applied to the new transfer.
