Re: Blockbuster Closing Store Bargains Thread 2012

Hit up my local Blockbuster during my lunch break and was glad I did. Apparently, they are closing and the liquidation starts 2/11, but I still went for the B1G1 sale (even though all the signs said it ended 1/28, it was still active).

Wound up getting the following for a total of $45.54 (and they threw in empty 2-disc Viva Elite blu-ray cases for each for free):

The Dark Knight Rises - $12.99
The Amazing Spider-Man - $12.99
Prometheus - $12.99
Magic Mike - $12.99
Contagion - $9.99
Rise of the Planet of the Apes - $9.99
The Illusionist (French) - $6.99
Source Code - $6.99

The cashier rang them up as 3 separate transactions for me, so I was able to maximize my savings. They didn't have any copies of The Dark Knight Rises in the B1G1 section, but the cashier just went and pulled one off the rental shelf for me. I will definitely be back during the liquidation to see if I can get some borderline titles for under $5.

Stopped in the Royal Oak, MI store tonight (haul here) and they told be they're getting shut down along with the Ferndale and Clawson stores. I think they said the Hoover location in Warren (next to Red Lobster) and the 9 Mile and Gratiot store as well as one out in the sticks on Dequindre.

Wow on the Viva Elite BD cases. I have never once seen a real BD case at a Blockbuster store, and every time I've asked the various stores have told me they are sent to them in regular rental cases so they never have any BD cases to give. Either that info was wrong or you've got a magical store. Viva Elite cases are so much better than hideous ECO (flimsy) cases.

No stores have had a closing sale in my area for a long time (getting near a year I think), though a couple have just spontaneously closed with no notice due to rent/lease issues. I checked my list again and there are only 4 stores that are remotely within my driving range even in a stretch. I'll go to those if they ever close. Since the Buy One Get One Free sale was extended until next Monday, I'm going to try to stop by one soon, but that evil thing called work screws my schedule over royally Monday through Friday pretty much preventing me from going to any stores and having enough time to browse. If I go anywhere during the week, it's run in and run out for specific items. I'm afraid it'll be slim pickings by the time I get there, and what is there will probably be all "rental exclusive" versions sans extras which I tend to avoid.

From my past store closing experience, most of the stuff doesn't start to disappear until the price is $4.99 or less. For me "borderline" BDs are ones that I'll only pay a couple dollars for. $5 is for the stuff I really want. But I've posted before that for each of the several store closing I visited in their final weeks, the inventory (i.e. what little was left near the end) was almost exactly the same couple dozen titles at each store, so it became diminishing returns. Given that a lot of time has passed maybe there would be some new stuff in the mix.

Re: Blockbuster Closing Store Bargains Thread 2012

They just throw the blu-ray cases away. Depending on how many copies of something they get in this occasionally includes the artwork. Now I guess some stores may vary, but all of the ones in my area (Oklahoma City, Moore, and Norman OK) seem to be the same. Sometimes if we get someone nice and it's on a Tuesday they'll give us a stack of cases, sometimes the not so nice employees won't, on one occasion an employee told us he'd sale us cases for a dollar each. One guy told me that all I have to do is check the dumpster behind the store at the beginning of each week and I'd find stacks of cases, he was right, but I also found a bunch of old Chinese food on top of them courtesy of the place next door.

Edit:
I did a bit of searching and saw that none of the Blockbusters in 20 mile radius seemed to get in Hotel Transylvania, I went ahead and called my local Norman location to check and the man confirmed they are shutting down and the liquidation sale starts on Monday. I'm assuming this is happening to the other stores in Oklahoma City as well.

Re: Blockbuster Closing Store Bargains Thread 2012

The Grosse Pointe, MI store had almost all of their BOGO BDs in retail cases IIRC. They just didn't have anything I wanted. I go to another store and bought 15 discs, all in rental cases. Oh well.

Ive never had issue when buying titles of different prices when doing it on on one order... BUT... they have to keep everything grouped and scanned according to price... You literally have to watch them to make sure they dont accidentally mix the titles up

I picked up 'Dark Knight Rises' and 'Avengers' for $12.99. Both single discs.

My local store (Lawrence, MA) is closing; final date is April 7th. I'm sure I'll keep an eye open once the clearance sales start - when they closed the Haverhill store last year, I picked up a couple dozen BD movies for $1-$2.

Re: Blockbuster Closing Store Bargains Thread 2012

Found out some news here in my state. Every Blockbuster in the state is closing it's doors. In Norman the sale isn't too great yet, every blu-ray and DVD is currently 9.99 I did manage to score Dredd 3d and Looper though. They also had a big box with new dvd and blu-ray cases at 5 for a dollar. Picked up 10 cases in various formats to replace old rental ones.

I'm planning on hitting up some in OKC tomorrow, hopefully I'll find some better deals.

Re: Blockbuster Closing Store Bargains Thread 2012

Do the stories so far mean that all Blockbuster stores are closing soon in all states or just certain states? I figured this would happen, but I thought it was a ways off yet.

For those who have been told their stores are closing, please post the closing dates (one person posted 4/7/13). I guess I'll have to keep a closer eye on my 4 remaining stores and check weekly which aren't out of driving range (for a sane person).

All of my local Blockbusters are now going out of business as well. I have no idea where the closest one is now.

There are five within an hour of me... just found out two of them are on the chopping block... they just need to close them all down, then again, I enjoy the staggered closings because I can score some different items each time

Re: Blockbuster Closing Store Bargains Thread 2012

Where are you finding out which stores are closing? I can't find anything official, but some stores are posting on Craigslist- found the last one that's reasonably near me is finally being put out of its misery, but no word on others that are still within driving distance.

Re: Blockbuster Closing Store Bargains Thread 2012

I called the 4 stores in my area and all of them said they had no plans to close. They also said the only BD sale was 25% off. So I'm not going to waste my gas going yet having missed the BOGO.

Anyone have any idea if it's worth checking once a week or are all stores closing only in certain areas? If I check online each Wednesday, can I always rely on if I see a release from the day before available at each store that means it's not closing yet?

Re: Blockbuster Closing Store Bargains Thread 2012

My local Blockbuster is closing... and good riddance. They purposely started excluding BDs from the 5 for $20/$4 for $20 sales when other stores honored the deal. Apart from a couple Red Box kiosks, my town will now have no physical rental locations.

I do hope I'm able to get some good deals before they shut down. The current banners reads "CLOSING SOON - DVDs $9.99 and under!" They just put up these signs, so I think I'll wait until they are a bit more eager to unload stock. How long do these closing sales usually last?

My BB (59 & 1960 across from Deerbrook Mall) is also closing. Same as the above poster with all the signs and same specials. No new movies put out yet, spoke with the kid at the counter and he said the newer titles will be coming out in a few weeks and the sale will be running until April.

Re: Blockbuster Closing Store Bargains Thread 2012

I checked the store closest to home tonight and they were at 50% off PPV titles which is confusing due to the pricing stickers. I asked and basically DVDs are $4.99 and BDs are $7.99, though some are $6.99. I'm glad I stocked up during the BOGO sale a couple weeks back because I was paying effectively $7.50, $5 and $3.50 for what I got. Didn't see a thing that I didn't have already or wanted at these prices.

The store locator is still showing the locations that are liquidating, so it's useless. I know for a fact the first three hits on my search are toast.

Re: Blockbuster Closing Store Bargains Thread 2012

And now, another update (from VGChartz):

Blockbuster Administrators Deloitte has announced that it will be closing another 164 stores. This brings the total number of store closures to 324. This leaves about 200 stores remaining open. The Administrators are hoping to find a buyer for the remaining stores.

"We have continued to review the performance of individual stores since our appointment a month ago and have concluded that further closures are necessary in order to restructure the Company for sale," said Joint Administrator Lee Manning.

"We would like to thank the company’s employees for their support and professionalism during this difficult time and we are also grateful for the continued support of customers," added Manning. "We are in discussions with a number of parties interested in purchasing all or parts of the business and will update on progress in due course."

Re: Blockbuster Closing Store Bargains Thread 2012

Do closing Blockbuster's change their closing sale signs throughout the closing period? My local closing store has a sign that says "All DVDs $9.99 and below" in the window. I was busy and just driving by, but should I be waiting for a sign with a lower total or does the "and below" generally capture the price drops so that you go in/call each week to see what the prices are?

Re: Blockbuster Closing Store Bargains Thread 2012

The last one by me closed and I missed it. A little bummed about that one since I periodically do the exchange in store, or if I get a bad online rental disc, the manager would let me exchange it for a functioning disc even if I wasn't signed up for in-store. One left about 20 minutes away but won't do an exchange program there. Too far.

I did pick up 6 a few weeks ago at that further location. I asked for cases but she says they throw them out. If I worked there I'd pack them up and eBay them. What the hell, you're going to be out of a job soon anyway.

Re: Blockbuster Closing Store Bargains Thread 2012

Dropped into my local closing location yesterday and the discs were still too high. For the most part they were more expensive per disc than I got during the BOGO sale a couple of weeks ago.

Although, they were selling empty Blu-ray cases, 5 for $1, so I picked up 10 multi-disc Elite cases for $2. They should come in handy if I care to ever keep a SD-DVD or SD-DVD features disc with a barebones title on Blu.

They rightly (for business reasons) would not tell me what the price drop schedule would be (weekly or otherwise), but the store's final closing date is April 7, so I'll check back in around March 1st to see where prices are.

The store by me had those big signs, but when you walk in they had the current discounts (50% for PPV stuff; 30% for candy or something) posted on 8.5x11" sheets. It basically worked out to $5 DVDs and $8 BDs. You'll have to go in or call for current discounts.
