Re: Nintendo Switch 2 - 06/05/25
The standalone dock is $5 more ($125)
The GameCube controller is $5 more ($70)
(The other retro-style controllers also went up $5, although those are technically Switch 1 accessories.)
The Pro Controller is still $84 at Amazon and Walmart and $75 at Costco for anyone who wants to grab one.

Re: Nintendo Switch 2 - 06/05/25
Considering they hadn't had any price drops since the original Switch launched 8 years ago, it's kind of ridiculous that they couldn't absorb a $30 tariff fee at this point near the end of the lifespan. Those original consoles used to drop $50 on a yearly basis, but now they are able to hold the price for the entire lifespan? Can you imagine buying a 10 year old laptop for the same price or more?
But I did break down and get the Switch 2 Pokemon bundle for my two daughters this past week since I didn't even know that bundle existed until I saw it on the Target website a couple days ago. It'll release close enough to Christmas that I can call it an early present.

People can call it greedy all they want but there's a clear reason for it and it's not like they WANT to increase the price of the older systems because $$$.

OMG Nintendo. What are you doing?! Count me as one who just simply can’t defend Nintendo at all anymore. I totally understand the tariff situation [insert “I did that” img] but raising prices on things that clearly have a massive profit margin already built in when you already raised prices from their announced prices just a couple months ago? Also raising prices on the OG switch? WT actual F? I still can’t believe they’re selling the system alongside the SW2 and now they’re raising the price on it? And by a substantial amount. They could have just imported all their stock for the year before the tariffs hit.
Whatever the reason, legitimate or not, the optics aren’t good. And Nintendo doesn’t seem to care. They are cashing in goodwill checks like crazy and I’m really getting concerned for the future of the company. I think they’ve lost a lot of customers the last couple of months and in a lot of places online you can’t even mention Nintendo without a lot of vitriol thrown their way.

The amount of "Nintendo is just so greedy" coming from Americans is just mind blowing.
The "tax" rose by 15% on their products (soon to be 20%). What possible reason does Nintendo have to "eat" that cost? Look at just how much their hardware profit margin fell in the last year, mainly due to the switch 2, and then look at the fact they are not moving the switch 2's price (for now).
Corporate greed is increasing the price of your console when demand is highest. Not increasing it when there are increased taxes when demand is dying down and you have a replacement system in the wings.
As a side note this is also playing into the thought that "well, companies should just absorb the tariff costs" and not raise prices which is, of course, insanity for largely elastic goods and especially for non essentials but for another thread.

Yup. Elect a guy who promises to raise tariffs on everything, and congress members who vow to support him in that practice, expect to pay more for everything. Pretty simple.

Expecting foreign companies to crater their profit for the sake of American consumers is the most American thing ever.

And Nintendo is gonna take all the slings and arrows, then expect everyone else to raise up their prices shortly thereafter with significantly less outrage. Somebody had to be the first one.

Its like being the first guy to make a plate at the food table. Its a little awkward, but you're a hero to everyone after you who was too scared to go first.

Or you could be like Sony and raise prices everywhere else, presumably to subsidize American prices (though I'm sure that ends eventually)

With all of the scary stuff surrounding price increases, I did pre-order the Pokémon Z-A and Switch 2 bundle from Best Buy today. It's released on 10/18, so I have some more time to think and back out if I feel like it.
Oh, and I have made the decision that starting with the Switch 2, I will stick with digital games and end my life long practice of physical carts.
Wow... those are big steps for me.
Anyways...

You can use carts interchangeably within a family account, and up to one person can use any game at a time, and then you just change which SW2 can use them at any time.

It’s not just corporate greed. It’s survival. They have made a lot of money positing themselves as a family company. As well as carefully cultivating their IP and fans. They risk throwing all that away for short term gains on an 8 year old system. IMO they’re not playing the long game. The first year of a console can set the trajectory for the entire generation. This isn’t groceries where profits are pretty much a set percentage. Selling a product for a huge loss doesn’t make a lot of business sense either but video game companies have done that as well. This isn’t a normal business.
Plus they knew tariffs were coming. They really couldn’t have imported enough systems and accessories to meet demand for the foreseeable future?
Don’t get me wrong. I’m not laying the blame on Nintendo. This is a crazy unfortunate thing all around and just absolutely ridiculous policy making. But, for most people it doesn’t matter. They’re laying all the blame on Nintendo and it’s going to cost them.

Playing devil's advocate here... how many of the people who are currently outraged like this really going to buy a switch 1 right now. How many new customers are going to opt for the switch 2 instead of an OLED now that they are much closer in price?
And I'll say this, the people mad at Nintendo right now are going to be mad at a whole bunch of companies, both foreign and domestic.
They are a relatively conservative company when it comes to things like this and for good reason: while they make a ton of profit unlike Sony and Microsoft their bread and butter is basically this one business. This means that they are incentivized to make sure their consoles are available and that they don't kill demand, but it also means that they cannot just throw money away and make it up somewhere else.

Again, yes the companies could bend over backwards to offset the tariffs, but you know what that encourages? More tariffs. Why should they, and why should we expect them to? And again, they are not raising the price of their brand new console, even though they are most likely taking a bath from the tariffs. They are, at least for now, focused on making sure that pricepoint is not disrupted, which they absolutely should. Anyone placing the blame on Nintendo either doesn't understand how tariffs work or wants the tariffs to succeed (for various reasons, maybe even including that they somehow want Nintendo to move production the US and keep prices the same, which is, let's charitably say, incredibly naive).

I agree that there won’t be too many people Period that buy a Switch 1. That’s part of the reason why I find their price increases so puzzling. I seriously doubt it if it would amount to very much. And the things they’re raising the prices on are the products that have the most profit built in. They make a crap ton on profit off of their accessories. Especially controllers. Otherwise How can 8bitdo make just as good, and in a lot of ways better, of a controller and sell it for half the price?
I’m not going to go into the tariffs themselves because I think at least in here we’re pretty much in agreement they’re incredibly stupid.
I’m just worried that Nintendo seems to be very tone deaf lately and even though their pricing has a lot to do with it it’s on top of a lot of other unpopular decisions they have made.
They are not in control of the narrative.
