I seriously doubt that. How microscopic of a user base would they have at $1000? It would be literally twice the price from just the previous generation? Which was already a hard pill to swallow at $500 back then?

Re: Nintendo Switch 2 - 06/05/25

I'm kind of surprised Nintendo chose to go this route. I know the analysts and investors were screaming at Nintendo to raise their price (Thanks for that BTW ). But why would they chose to raise the price of their console but lower the price of their games? Don't get me wrong of course I'm all for that but they already bared the majority of the brunt of people complaining about $70 games. A console price increase is a one time fee and will get them bad publicity and a lower user base. But if they stayed the course they would have easily made up that $50 by keeping the price of games $70, even if they did sell digital for $60.

I'm sure Nintendo has a lot of bean counters a lot smarter than me helping them make decisions but it's a puzzling one to me. But great for me since I'm in before the price increase and get to pay less for games.

And look how expensive XSX and PS5s currently are, 6 years into their cycle. Gaming companies are not going to take $400 hits on consoles.

Yeah currently. Did you forget they released with their base consoles at $300 and $400? And this generation is STILL trying to play catch up with the previous generation. How much more difficult of a time do you think they'll have if they come out with base $1000 consoles??? Not going to happen. But I also agree that they're not going to take a $400 bath either. That's why, IMO the best option is to delay the next gen until prices and supply stabilize and excitement for the next gen compounds. The second option is for them to release an initial held back base console and later introduce a pro version that they can charge whatever they want to. Or they could release them at the same time kind of like the series S and X. But either way there's no way they release a $1000 console as the standard option. If they do they just sealed their own doom.

The ram situation isn't going to resolve itself for at least a year. Consoles are several years in the making. Not like they can really pivot here. Delaying the console only makes it worse because you are also delaying the technology inside by a year. That chip that runs the thing is now a year older. Comparing what the price was when they launched is irrelevant to what they will have to charge now as a result of sourcing the parts for this stuff now.

So? Push it back several years than. Nobody is clamoring for the next generation. And what if the tech is a year older? We're already at the point of diminishing returns in terms of entire console generations. Where you really have to squint and almost convince yourself that there's a tangible difference between the Pro consoles and the base consoles. The general public that make up the majority of console buyers don't care. And the launch price is absolutely relevant. All you're talking about is one small part of the bigger equation. What the tech will cost the companies. I'm looking at their entire business model.

The economy was in a much better place at the start of the generation at least where video games are concerned. Sure there was a lot of doubt over all but video games experienced a huge boom during the pandemic. All that extra pandemic money and nowhere to spend it meant people had a lot of money for home bound activities. And even then there was a lot of criticism for how expensive the consoles were back then. Compare that to now. People are struggling. Video games are no longer top priority. Video game studios are closing left and right. Now MS and Sony drop a $1000 console. Who in the world is going to be able to buy that? I think Sony is going to actually have to be innovative next generation to stay viable. They're definitely going to come out with some kind of cheaper option. I think it'll be their handheld that they're working on. Maybe it will be a cheaper hybrid console as an option for the general public to get in on the next generation while their most powerful tech will be in a much more expensive more traditional console form factor.

I'm with Tanman. I don't know what the answer is exactly, but Sony has to be brainstorming for how to handle this because they know launching a new generation with a $1,000 console isn't going to work.

They already said the 10 dollar increase in physical games doesn't cover the increased cost (and that they're hoping that the quality of their games will). I doubt they made either change lightly, considering how most of their eggs are in the videogame basket compared to their competitors, but it shows just how desperate the situation is.

I wonder if the cost of carts is just skyrocketing because of everything else (hence the oft hated game key cards)

I assume if I already have the game I'll be eligible for the next one without doing anything, right?

Yes, you just have to own the previous games to get the next one, so if you already own it you're fine for the next game.

Sadly for me, I already own both games so far. We'll see if there's a unique game they haven't given away before.
