re: Nintendo Switch 2 - 06/05/25
It’s official: There are no Nintendo Switch 2 reviews. Here’s what that means for us, and you
According to a company spokesperson, Nintendo decided not to send Switch 2 review units to press ahead of launch because "important features and updates" will only be available via a system update on the day of the console's official release, on June 5. It did not say what these updates entail, or explain why the media wasn't offered the opportunity to review its launch games, like Mario Kart World and Switch 2 Welcome Tour, at in-person events instead, like it did with previous console launches such as Wii. Neither did it explain why critics can't be trusted to cover products with knowledge that additional functionality will be patched later, as they're frequently used to. But a lack of coverage at or before release is bad for you, our readers. When Switch 2 arrives, there will have been no reviews of its software, no analysis of its hardware performance or battery life, or any testing of its key features, such as Game Chat, or how backwards compatible Switch 1 games perform. No hidden gems will be unearthed, and no potential dodgy ports highlighted, before you have a chance of spending your hard-earned money. And when reviews do arrive, well after launch day, many critics will have been incentivized to rush through their games as quickly as possible, with Google and social media rewarding speed over quality. It also means that, like other sites – including the very biggest – we'll now need to juggle our Switch 2 review coverage with one of the biggest events of the year, Summer Game Fest, which takes place during this launch weekend, which Nintendo will have been well aware of. But it's not just the media that misses out: more than 20 Switch 2 launch games from third parties have now effectively been prevented from generating any day-one review coverage for their titles. Many publishers have reached out to sites like VGC asking for clarification around when the press would receive review units, and some even said they wished they'd chosen to release their games later, after it became clear they would not be able to secure authentic editorial coverage at all. |
re: Nintendo Switch 2 - 06/05/25
maybe i won't open until reviews. i can always return it if it flops on its belly.

re: Nintendo Switch 2 - 06/05/25
I'd imagine many of the games won't be as polished as you'd expect. I'd be very wary about buying any 3rd party game before seeing reviews. I foresee many reviews that say Nintendo is charging for a game upgrade that does almost nothing over the Switch 1 version.
I don't think there's ever been a valid reason to hold reviews from getting out that was a good thing, rather than a giant red flag. |
re: Nintendo Switch 2 - 06/05/25
Just got a shipping notice from Nintendo (Fed Ex). Label created, no estimate yet, but is FedEx 2Day, so hoping Thursday.

Absolutely. And again, this is all per Nintendo's own specs. It has half the expected low-end of battery life from the OLED and an hour less than the Lite. Pop on a game like Cyberpunk that'll have the GPU working hard and I'll go on a limb and say we'll see it die at around 1.5 hours.

For comparison, The Steam Deck's battery is 1000mAh larger than the one in the Switch OLED. I don't know if the actual capacity of the battery in the 2 has been announced. Might need a teardown vid for that info. A real-world comparison would be phones. The Switch OLED has a battery which is slightly larger than a S25 but far less than a S25+. |
re: Nintendo Switch 2 - 06/05/25
I don't know what the specs are but my Steam Deck doesn't last that long, though you'd think Nintendo could optimize things a lot better given they control hardware and software.

With this key-card thingie, do we have to have that worthless no actual game cartridge in our system to play or once it's downloaded, no more key-card insert? thanks.

They only control the software of their own titles. I can't imagine companies porting over years old games are putting much effort into optimization outside of having the game running.

So unless you are a collector of boxes, you are going to be better off buying digital copies of games.
Just a reminder that you can save 10% every day as a Costco member by buying eShop store credit in $50 increments online, if a Costco member. Also possibly no sales tax on digital purchases. |

I really think it's just Nintendo wanting an iron grip over the narrative, which feels in-step with the trajectory they've been on for a while now. It's a drag because pre-release reviews compelled me to check out Snipperclips on the Switch, and if there's something similarly cool and unexpected for the Switch 2, I'm a lot less likely to be aware of it, at least out of the gate.

I ordered a game and 2 accessories from walmart.com when placing my preorder. One is coming with the Switch 2 from a local store, and the others are shipping from a warehouse. Why not send them all at once? I guess it just doesn't make sense from a logistical standpoint otherwise. |

re: Nintendo Switch 2 - 06/05/25
Does anyone know about preorders for games on SW2? I was able to preorder online (you cannot purchase on SW1 console), but they don’t show in my preorders on eShop. Donkey Kong Bonanza is listed, but none of the others show, except they do show purchased when I go back to the game.
Will the Switch 2 preorder games just appear once my 2 is hooked up to internet? If no one knows, I’m sorry. I checked online and couldn’t find anything. Just wanted to see if anyone here might know. Thanks. |

re: Nintendo Switch 2 - 06/05/25
A ton of Switch games have gotten fresh updates in anticipation of Switch 2, including a few I don’t think I’d seen highlighted previously: Super Mario 3D All-Stars (neat to see a delisted game get some love!), Pikmin 3 Deluxe, Xenoblade Chronicles 3, and The Legend of Zelda: Echoes of Wisdom (which now has a “favorite echoes” feature!).

Your options are waiting however many years for a new model, bypassing the Switch 2 altogether, or grinning and bearing it, and I feel like most Nintendo die-hards would opt for the latter. At least the number of cross-gen titles makes it easier to wait.

That being said I don't like this new Nintendo. I don't like this new Nintendo that's basically been a take it or leave it Nintendo. One that seemingly isn't willing to fight for its userbase and fans. Hopefully this is all just related to the launch and the system itself will do really well. But they have garnered so much negative feelings towards them I really think they have hurt their reputation. The worst part about it is I don't think they have any idea how much they have done just that. |
re: Nintendo Switch 2 - 06/05/25
yay. I'm finally in the "preparing" stage for the console. oddly enough the Pro controller I bought online at Walmart and that hasn't changed. I'll make do, just thought it was odd. Edit...controller being "prepared" as well now.

My Switch 2 ships tomorrow (Best Buy), so I probably won’t get it until Friday at the earliest. GameCube controller is on track for tomorrow.

re: Nintendo Switch 2 - 06/05/25
It’s long, but I thought this video did the best rundown of all of Nintendo's previous generations and how well they did. I am pretty worried about this generation. I’m doubtful they can capture the success of the Switch and hate to see what other consumer unfriendly policies they come up with. |

My WalMart order updated and says arriving tomorrow by 10pm, which is interesting since they touted guaranteed 9am delivery for these things.
