Nintendo Switch 2 - 06/05/25

https://cimg1.ibsrv.net/gimg/dvdtalk...22949bcb3.jpeg

It’s happening! Some of the leaks were accurate: the name, the presentation of the logo, the magnetically-attached Joy-Cons, seemingly the mouse-like capabilities, what maybe the fabled C button in the lower-right (though unlabeled in the video)…

But it’s clearly a bigger, better Switch, and we got a glimpse at what I assume is a new Mario Kart to boot!

Very excited to see more with the Nintendo Switch 2 Direct in April.

Hmm, one of their slides said some Switch games won't be fully compatible. Wonder which games and why that would be?

They have tours which go through the end of April which would mean release won't be till at least May.

I know I said I wouldn't get it, but I'm in  In for all the picross games. They're just too good. Other puzzles games. And mario kart.

Yeah, I’ll be looking forward to that clarification. Hopefully they’re edge cases like we saw from the PS4 > PS5.

I'm hoping it's just stuff like the Labo(?) items, since those are physical things used with the Switch.

I remember going to the GameCube Experience before its launch. They had one local in Boston. Feels like a lifetime ago.

I just saw some more observant folks spot 24 racers in the Mario Kart screenshot: double the usual 12!

Even better, just have it compatible with the current controller.

I’m in. Day one purchase.

Hopefully we’ll never have to deal with the “D”-word on these joycon joysticks.

Bloomberg: Robin Zhu, an analyst at Sanford C. Bernstein, said ahead of the announcement that Nintendo has prepared a supply chain network that will allow the company to sell more than 20 million units (Switch 2) in its first year (compared to ~15 million around first year of Switch 1)
So hopefully these won't be too much of a headache to get on day one!

Noonan 01-16-25 08:27 AM

re: Nintendo Switch 2 - 06/05/25

They've milked this release for all its worth. If there are supply issues at launch, it would be an amazing failure for Nintendo.

My local grocery store had $100 gift cards to Best Buy for $80… and I got two. Looks like I’ll be getting a $40 discount on the Switch 2. 😝

re: Nintendo Switch 2 - 06/05/25

I ended up getting a Switch on day one, but it’s easily my least-used option for gaming. So I’ll probably hold off on Switch 2 at least until there’s a Mario or otherwise exclusive must-have game for me. That said, I’ve come to the conclusion that the new era of Zelda games — specifically Breath & Tears — are Not For Me(tm) which is fine, but that means a new game in that series is of absolutely no interest to me.

I feel like the delays in announcing this have at least somewhat to do with some of the developments in the hacking/archiving community, but discussion about specifics is likely not a good idea here.

I'm still on the fence. I was a heavy user of the Switch for probably five years, but most of my gaming the last couple have moved to the PS5.

I'm probably in the boat that it will be a new game that gets me to purchase a new Switch, I don't think I'll get it just to have it at this point. Something as simple as a new Animal Crossing game would definitely push me over the edge, though.

Are they doing away with the microSD cards?

re: Nintendo Switch 2 - 06/05/25

Well, it was inevitable I guess, that we would get another Nintendo system. We're finding ourselves not gaming as much as we used to, and doing more PC gaming when we do. We were just playing the latest Mario Party game the other night, and there were more than a few places I kept seeing weird graphical glitches that I can only blame on insufficient processing power, I certainly hope this doesn't have the same flaw.

And very glad to see it's backwards compatible, but I wonder if it will do anything for the look or performance of the older games.

Nothing officially confirmed yet, but basically the same answer as in the Switch thread.

Rumor is microSD Express for additional storage, which is faster than regular ol’ microSD.

We already have backwards compatibility confirmed, so the new device should accept Switch cards, but we don’t know if there’ll be something different about Switch 2-exclusive cards (storage capability, slightly different shape, etc.).

re: Nintendo Switch 2 - 06/05/25

Ok. Got scared I couldn’t use the ones I have. I’ll have to look into the express or is that nearly out yet? That would be the best thing since getting a system 8 years too late! Who does that?
**edit** nope not out yet.

I'm taking a wait-and-see approach to this. It's not going to break me to upgrade my Switch, but not sure if I want to get one right away or wait a bit.
Need lots more information. Also wondering about those vouchers, if they'll qualify for Switch 2 games...

re: Nintendo Switch 2 - 06/05/25

I’m in on day one, despite the Switch being by far my least played console of 2024. I have confidence in Nintendo putting together a compelling slate, and the Switch punched way above its weight for an impressively big chunk of this incredibly long life cycle.

I sympathize. I do really like (but not love) Breath and Tears, but the classic style is more my thing. When I see people excitedly salivate over the prospect of a Breath of the Wild Definitive Edition or whatever, I kinda reflexively wince.

Yeah, I’m in no rush. As I said I’m 8 years late to the current party, but if it wasn’t a hassle and listed on Amazon I could wisely use credit.

You should totally be there day one. That way you can get into a console and it's successor within 6 months of each other. Who does that? Nobody! That's exactly why you need to do it OldBoy!

tanman 01-16-25 09:19 PM

re: Nintendo Switch 2 - 06/05/25

I've managed to stick with just one Switch console this whole gen so my wallet is ready. I'm there day one.

As for the announcement itself at first I was pretty disappointed. Basically zero information that wasn't already leaked. No price, no specs no formal game announcements. Have to wait another 3 months for more information.

But I have to admit it's pretty smart of Nintendo. They basically took back all the power from all the leaks. Releasing just a (really well produced, especially the sound design) video of the body of the video they build hype while leaving a formal announcement at a time of their choosing. Now they just have to keep the leaks to a minimum until 4/2/24

As for the console itself. I'm definitely excited. But it is so strange to see a new Nintendo console so derivative of itself to the point of just calling it the Switch 2. Same logo and everything. I think it's the right move and a real testament to how revolutionary the Switch design is. And that's what everybody wants just an updated Switch console. But it's still strange for Nintendo to be giving people what they want instead of trying to add a new gimmick.

One thing I would like to see though is to add back some of that Nintendo charm into the UI. Don't get me wrong, I absolutely love the Switch's UI. Especially in this day and age where every single pixel in every single device is trying to throw up an ad in your face there's something so refreshing with how simple the UI is and how fast it is to get into a game on the Switch. But some part of me misses that Nintendo charm in the presentation. Like the lovely music of the Wii channels or the fun way they popped in and out. And remember how amazing it was to spin the globe when checking the weather on the Wii? Stuff like that I miss on the Switch's UI.

Decker 01-16-25 09:26 PM

re: Nintendo Switch 2 - 06/05/25

I'm sure Nintendo doesn't want to quote a price before they see what sort of onerous tariffs are being imposed by the incoming administration. That could add another $50-$100 to the price, I'm afraid. :(

Michael Corvin 01-16-25 09:45 PM

re: Nintendo Switch 2 - 06/05/25

That has to be the most lackluster reveal ever. Look it's a Switch but BIGGER! Joycons...but BIGGER! Oh and 10 seconds of one game!

I do dig the logo. Simple and effective.

So it's a wait and see for me too. I don't need a MP focused game at launch. I need a strong single player game. Ahem, Metroid 4?

Pray that there's enough stock so that when they become available to pre-order, they're not all swiped up by resellers using bots to slam the sites with orders.

glass houses and all that. I can't believe you of all people replied like that, even tongue in cheek. ;)

Sonny, sign up for the best buy preorder notification, but really what you're going to have to do is keep up to date with when preorders go live and then fight the bots for them. If there's enough supply they should be readily available after launch but to get a preorder in is going to be hell if only because scalpers are very very good at their "job."

Follow wario64 on your social media platform of choice (and that can include Bluesky and Discord). Not only is that account spectacular at providing preorder links the instant they go up, it also will sometimes include workarounds that otherwise aren't publicly visible. (They've had some weird Amazon preorder buttons that work even when the regular product page is being uncooperative.) Shortly before preorders go live -- and Nintendo will typically announce the date/time beforehand -- you can set alerts on your phone to make sure you see these updates.

Similarly, it could be worth monitoring preorder discussions on Reddit, ResetERA, or...well, hopefully here too. On higher-traffic forums, anyway, these links are shared very, very, very quickly, so if you're in front of your computer or have a phone in-hand when preorders open, you should be golden.

If you're rarin' and ready to go when preorders go live, and if you aren't fussy about where you order from (by which I mean not being brand-loyal between Target-or-bust and being open to Walmart, Amazon, Best Buy, GameStop, etc.), I don't think you'll have a hard time scoring a console. Preorders are generally easy if you're ready to pounce, and these are very unlikely to sell out everywhere in minutes.

Pre-order opportunity won't happen before the April showcase either, I assume?

Yeah, I’d bank on that. Preorders for the Switch coincided with the full showcase in January 2017.

I haven't owned a Nintendo console since the Wii. But, I only ended up using it sporadically and ended up selling it within 2 years. The last Nintendo console that I actively used was the original NES ages ago.

***Note this is not counting the small retro NES and SNES consoles that were released several years ago and are now out of stock. I still have those. but they are put away for now.

Not sure I can muster the $$$ and time to for the Switch 2.

re: Nintendo Switch 2 - 06/05/25

I'll say this: because of the age of my kids and their complete lack of interest in the FPS genre (outside of Splatoon) the switch has become my most played console over it's span. I can barely muster the energy to play my PS5 or XSX but the switch is always available when they're using the TV and when they want to play is the console of choice. So I'm all in on a switch 2 (when it's easy to get).

The $199 PS Portal works great for this problem as well.
