That 100% depends on if you're OK with re-running the same areas over and over to make progress. IMO, I've already gotten my money's worth and I'm like half done, at most.

I'm not picky about replaying as long as the gameplay itself is engaging (hell, I replayed the last half of NieR: Replicant 5 times in the last 3 weeks).

Sounds like a more linear Roguelike which would be fun.

The gameplay is super fun, IMO. Pure bullet hell with fast movement and dashes. It also helps that it's beautiful looking and the areas are very different from each other.

Oh, this is also the best use of the dualsense haptics that I've seen as well. You can feel the rain drops.

Game is absolutely worth the full price IMO. The game world being procedurally generated makes it easier to take having to start from the beginning every time you die since the landscape and stuff will be different each time.

Re: Returnal - From Housemarque Studio (PS5) - 4/30/21

My problem with procedurally generated is that there is not much that stands out. Sure they can put some random cool objects or other things to appear, but it isn't quite the same as a crafted landscape. It makes me wonder if they could do a randomly generated map in a game like GTA and what that might be like.

This game also makes good use of the faster SSD in the PS5. Going from one zone to another is almost seamless and there's no loading time anywhere in the game.

...I mean, I still don't have a PS5 but that's only a matter of time.
This game is absolutely worth full price. I bought the digital deluxe edition for $90, and I have no regrets at all. I love these rogue-like run-based games, and this one is checking box after box after box. It's not perfect but it's very very good.

Beat this today. Hell of a game. Some of the enemy attacks in the last biome...just wild stuff.

Re: Returnal - From Housemarque Studio (PS5) - 4/30/21

I’m in the third biome. The best weapon I like using is the one you charge and fires poison. Works quite well. I even kept an 8 version instead of going to an 11 of the shotgun type weapon.

I have a question. I know the astronaut figurines bring you back to life. And the reconstructor will as well. Do the space shuttles do the same? And do they not stack? I had one of each in my inventory (or at least picked them up during my run) and once I died, it used the astronaut to bring me back. After that death was death. No revival.

Kind of stupid if you ask me.

Space shuttles make your dashes better; nothing to do with extra life.

Re: Returnal - From Housemarque Studio (PS5) - 4/30/21

I finally got to the third boss and had pretty much maybe 20% health. It was no contest. It sucks too because the path to him took forever, even with the shortcut. Fuck those homing missile rockets or whatever and fuck those giant robots. And don’t even get me started on lasers and dash disabled.

Re: Returnal - From Housemarque Studio (PS5) - 4/30/21

I had to go with lopper's suggestion and just run through the whole biome. You really have to spend the time to clear out biome 1 to increase your health bar and hopefully get an astronaut at the fab room.

There's one room you can get in the tower (after you cross the bridge) which has tons of enemies. The key is to locate the blue bubble and dash to it asap to move to the upper section where they can't get to you. I put the game down for the past week due to a content patch for FF14 but I'll be back at it soon. My best run at the boss had his last health bar down about half way.

I'm here now. Fuck that boss. Stupid bridge is too far back too.

Edit: Nevermind, bridge is adequately placed, but you still need a large, regular, astronaut and/or shield to get there because of those stupid flying turds.

Re: Returnal - From Housemarque Studio (PS5) - 4/30/21

Welp made it to what I assume is the final boss and I flat have no idea how to kill the mf'er. And that... that's just great

I think I should win something for how many times I died to beat this game (non-secret ending). 212. Win.

Edit: 222 after finding all the sun pieces and beating the last boss again for the "secret ending." Nice even number to end on the final boss is surprisingly easy all things considered.

Also am I right in assuming (end spoilers)
Spoiler:
This is all Selene, already a headcase with mommy issues, on a guilt trip for abandoning her son Helios in a submerged car and letting him drown?

Returnal gets its long-awaited Suspend Cycle update (and a Photo Mode!) today. More on the PS Blog.

So, you can pause and shut off console and then resume, right? As the above article points out…

Re: Returnal - From Housemarque Studio (PS5) - 4/30/21

i finally picked up this game cheap. made it through the first biome. but haven't really gotten back to the second. keep getting destroyed while i'm stacking health/artifacts in first biome in the lockdown rooms with the green wirey creatures and the black and red minibosses.

frustrating. especially when i don't know it's going to be a lockdown room.

Thanks for the bump. I miss this game. Need to start up a 2nd run when I finish Octopath 2.

Aren’t there icons showing which room is a lockdown room?

I think the biggest mistake people make is over preparation for the biomes.
