Re: PlayStation 5 - 11/12/20

So, my son picked up a PS5 via Sony Direct this past week and has decided he needs a monitor that can take advantage of it. However, his budget is on the low side ($400 or under). He might be able to go a little higher if needed, but at the same time, he doesn't have $1k+ to spend on this. So I'm trying to help him find a semi-decent monitor/TV to go with the system.

He is open to either getting a gaming monitor or a TV with HDR but realizes in this price range there will be compromises. He plays a little bit of the e-sports games but is more into the single player campaign games (Dark Souls, for example). He also has space limitations where he is, so he needs to maximize at 40" or less in size. He typically plays with bluetooth headphones so its okay that a gaming monitor does not have sound built-in, and he will use the PS5 to drive any video viewing, so he doesn't need a tuner or infinite inputs.

I'm thinking his best bet is a 4k gaming monitor in the 60Hz range with decent HDR specs. Found the LG 27UL550-W doing some research which is supposed to do great image-wise with its IPS Freesync panel (though my son is hesitant about the 27" monitor size). Any other good suggestions in this price range?? Any help is appreciated.

That isn't enough for a good monitor. I mean you can probably find a decent one, but it probably be missing some of the higher end features. More bang for your buck buying a TV. But at that budget, he isn't going to get 2.1 HDMI inputs either to take advantage of 120 hz. Sort of a trade off at that price point. I would go the TV route for the versatility, but that is just me. Also be aware that Sony doesn't output to 1440p on monitors, so unless he gets a 4k one, it sort of defeats the purpose of higher resolution.

I'm one who for gaming sticks with...Size Does Matter...BUT...with the PS5 (and even new XBox) you need to look for at least a good 120Hz and 4K in mind. New games are being made and are coming in the future to take advantage of the New Gen and even PC has to offer. All that doesn't matter if you don't have a display for it....Forget a actual PC Monitor...at best that budget might get a 27".....and for TV's...well they're being effected by the Chip Crisis like everything else and prices have jumped especially for the newer and larger sizes. You possibly can look for a older model from Vizo and TCL....I don't know much on Hisense....keep looking at deals from Best Buy, Walmart and Amazon....just my 2 cents worth...

IMO 120hz is going to be niche for a long time. devs realize people aren't going to upgrade TV, AV, and cables for a faster frame rate that can't be reached at 4k on high-detailed games anyway. Get the biggest 4k, HDR TV you can afford. I personally avoid the lower-tier brands, and go for Samsung. Sony & LG are better, but for me don't justify the increase over Samsung -- can usually size up a level for the same price.

Thanks for the feedback everyone. Like I said before, his space won't allow for something bigger than a 40" screen (and even then, it spills slightly over into a door frame) so the option to upgrade there is just non-existent. What we've found is that there isn't much in the 4k TV realm under 43", anyway, which is why we were considering a gaming monitor instead. At least that way, he can maybe find something upwards of a 32" screen though the quality of the screens seems to drop significantly in his price range. The 27" LG at least had decent reviews on its HDR image which is why we were considering that.

Deftone - Understood about the 1440p issue which is why he is focusing on the 4k monitors.

Unfortunately most monitors have trash HDR unless you are spending $$$$.

As to screen size...how much space for the actual width does he have? A lot of manufactures sort of went with odd sizes for a more theater Screen Look..like use to se 36", 42", 48"...not you see a lot in the 43inch range but the screen is around 38-40 inches wide with thin black bezels....Samsung has a 32 inch Q50 Series that's pretty loaded but it's at $500....personally 40-43 inch down to 32" is losing a lot of Real-estate...that's just 5 inches more than a typical 27 inch Monitor. I'd try for a 40-43...plus the ones under that. I didn't see many thjat offered a lot of features...

I love my 4k OLED and the PS5 was absolutely gorgeous when it was hooked up to it. No denying it. That being said, I think people ore overselling its importance, "you HAVE to have 4k with a PS5 or XSX!" I recently moved the PS5 downstairs to hook up to my 1080p projector. 11' screen. Ratchet and Clank is as gorgeous as ever on it. Is it as pretty as the OLED? Of course not, but it still looks damn amazing and size compensates for the time being.

I'm saving pennies for a 4k projector but in the meantime, I have no regrets moving the PS5 to take advantage of the big screen.

yea...I'm still hoping to land a PS5; just not going bonkers everyday doing it. I have a Sony projector HW40ES on a Draggonfly lite grey screen and picture wise it's pretty awesome. I set it to Low almost all the time to save the Bulb but recently bought and tried a brand off Amazon half of what a Sony Bulb is and so far it's done great. Ps4 games look great but on LED TV's you can't match the overall color, detail and Black...but I'm not giving up the screen size which had to beat. Still considering a Gaming PC but prices on them are pathetic like consoles.

...The 4k is an extra benefit but I'm not quite there especially with the 4K Projectors...and the price of a replacement bulb. Plus I'd have to get a new AVR Receiver with 4K pass thru....love my Yamaha but have to get rid of it and the Sony to do a full overhaul....

By our measurements, the widest the screen can be (bezels and all) is about 35.5", and that's with the screen barely reaching in to the door frame area. On the other side is a bi-fold closet door. So his space is rather well-defined. For his PS4, he is currently on a 32" 1080p monitor, which fits comfortably in the space.

What about making a TV Mobile...space for one anywhere in the room or another space and just roll it...I have a friend at work who made a Mobile TV Cart/Stand for a 48inch TV to roll outside and watch TV on the Deck on nice nights. There's some DIY Models/Plans and all sorts of pre-made that's cheap to expensive...just throwing that out exploring any and all means. For say a 40 inch set, they don't weigh alot..20-25 pounds maybe...wouldn't take a large unit and base with wheels.

That's cool. They've always been a second party studio for Sony, but it's nice that they got brought aboard as a part of Playstation now. They do great work, even if I can't play Returnal at all.

And they might have acquired Bluepoint as well. PlayStation JP’s initial and since-deleted Housemarque tweet had an image with Bluepoint‘s logo overlaid instead and also included the Demon’s Souls guy.

The PS5 upgrade for Greedfall dropped today. Safe to assume I'll be able to upgrade the copy from PSN+ a few months back?

Boooo

I've been putting off starting it since the news of the upgrade came out. Looks like it's $40? Not worth that for a graphics upgrade and an expansion I wouldn't get to for at long time.

GameStop did another drop for Pro members and my wife managed to snag a decent bundle, so we've now got this and the XSX.

What's Destruction All-Stars about?

Think a cross between demolition derby and an Overwatch-style hero shooter. It's the sort of thing that is amazing in theory (especially for my wife, who's addicted to Overwatch, Wreckfest, Forza, etc.), but in practice...errr... It's not terrible or anything, but it didn't have any staying power for us. It's a drag because we were really excited about it.
