And, with the second HotD coming out as well, I’m looking even more forward it.

Games will be showcased in a separate event, with a release coming somewhere around May or June. So release date aside, it sounds a lot like the Switch reveal.

Can't wait. But all these leaks sure seems like it will take the wind out of their sales. Especially since it really seems to be a Switch 2. Doesn't seem like there will be anything drastically different. So while the Switch release could have gotten away with mainly talking about the console it doesn't seem like the Switch 2 would have enough hardware buzz to carry a presentation without announcing some games. But this is all speculation on my part. And this is Nintendo. Anything they announce will generate lots of buzz.

As tight as Nintendo can be with their stuff I'm really surprised all these accessories manufacturers are risking their relationship with Nintendo.

All this buzz might be good for them but this is Nintendo. They cancelled and entire Zelda TV show just because word got out they were working on one. They are notoriously protective of their information. And usually pretty good at preventing leaks. Maybe accessories companies were just sitting on this information for way too long? It's really strange to me that Nintendo would allow their next console to be leaked by these companies.

I'm not really expecting a presentation, exactly; something more like the October '16 reveal of the Switch, which (as far as I remember, anyway) didn't have a host, any narration, or any on-screen text beyond the name of the device and the release date. Just kind of a "here it is! this is what it does" that was all show with (literally!) zero tell.

I don't think it'd be exactly the same approach with the Switch being such a colossally popular console/handheld/whatever, so they don't have to introduce the core concepts that've been in our hands for the past 8 years. But, like, this is what it looks like, brief glimpses of games that look better than anything that OG Switch could deliver (similar to Splatoon 2 and Super Mario Odyssey in the 2016 reveal), the Joy-Cons are magnetic now, you can maybe use a Joy-Con as a mouse, yadda yadda. More of a tease/reveal (just a couple minutes long, if that) with a full, proper introduction arriving separately.

I don't think Genki is an official Nintendo partner, so they don't really have anything to lose.

Absolutely amazing playing with the light gun. It is so much fun. Of course it’s all done by the joy cons but having them in the shotgun holder became so natural. I have to tweak the gyro a bit, but I was having a blast the few minutes I played HotD.

I must be getting old because I see that video and I'm like can't you just put down the console and pay attention to life for a second? And I'm a huge gamer.

That's what was so revolutionary though. Gaming as a social aspect. Not just online gaming or couch coop but bringing a game system and being able to play right there at a social event. Of course I agree with you Deb and as much as I might like a social event centered around video games. It does look kind of weird. But there had never been a system like that before. A totally self contained home console that you can take with you and play anywhere. They had to distinguish it from the WiiU which not only was a flop but had to be wirelessly tied to the console itself. Even today it's still revolutionary since there aren't any gaming systems with detachable controllers where you can play multiplayer like that.

But that's why the Switch really had the wow factor going for it with just the hardware reveal. If they go with the same type of reveal for the Switch 2, considering how derivative it is of the current Switch, and how seemingly so much has already been spoiled from it a reveal like that just won't have that same impact that the original Switch did. It's a real testament to the original Switch's design that they can basically rest on their laurels for this launch but it seems like this generation's console reveal won't have that certain Nintendo surprise that the last several consoles have had. Actually basically all of their consoles. This feels like a "sequel" console that will just be an iterative step up and nothing that introduces anything new or unique. You'd have to go back to the GBA or the SNES for that. Of course this is all just IMO and speculation.

I mean think about what they're competing against: mobile phones where people are glued to it even while walking around.

Can you leave joy cons in a charger for a prolonged amount of time or will it overcharge and damage? Thanks.

Assuming it happens...! I'm probably more than "excited" but not quite "hyped", if only because I'm expecting something more iterative than revolutionary, and it's the games I'm interested in more than the hardware. But the Switch is definitely long in the tooth, and I'm ready for something new.

I’m sure it’s just juiced in power but would take the same carts and memory. At least I hope so.

Rumor is microSD Express for additional storage, which is faster than regular ol’ microSD.

We already have backwards compatibility confirmed, so the new device should accept Switch cards, but we don’t know if there’ll be something different about Switch 2-exclusive cards (storage capability, slightly different shape, etc.).

I hope against hope that there is some way I can play my purchased digital games on both my Switch and a Switch 2 -- that digital ownership is handled in a better way than it was in the Switch generation. I doubt it though.

Are we sure this is happening? Don't they usually announce future Directs? At least a day before? Or will they just drop a teaser video and be done with it?

I'm really excited. But even though I've purposely been avoiding rumor news the leaks really have kind of dulled the excitement. That and the fact that it seems like it will be the most derivative console Nintendo has release. But the Switch has been such an incredible generation for Nintendo and such a great design they don't have to change much.

Honestly I'd be happy to just be able to browse the eShop quickly.

Crossing my fingers. I mean at this point they almost have to don't they? But this is Nintendo, and this is why most of the games for the Switch I've bought physically. I'm still mad about them switching digital currency arbitrarily way back during the Wii -> WiiU days.

When the Switch was finally unveiled, the announcement of the announcement was at 8:30 PM ET, leading into a 10:00 AM reveal the following morning. We didn’t get a tease tonight, so either it’s a shadowdrop or the rumor mill is a swing-and-a-miss yet again.

Is anyone familiar with light guns on Switch? specifically this one:
https://cimg6.ibsrv.net/gimg/dvdtalk...4bf6991c0a.jpg

I'm wondering if you can switch the trigger button. mine defaults to the left joy con on the top of gun and i would rather pull the trigger on the right joy con or the lower of the two in the gun. anyone know if that is possible? i mean, it still plays great and the left top trigger is not a huge problem, but i think it would be easier using the lower right joy con. there has go to be a setting i'm missing bc it seems like you should be able to. thanks in advance.

Re: Nintendo Switch: Building a New Generation of Hardware from Scratch

how do you keep 2 pairs of joy cons synced to Switch all the time?

When I turn it on, it only recognizes the one pair of joy cons I’m currently using. I want to be able to use the cons in the light gun, but then use Pro controller to play other stuff, but I have to sync the other pair or controller every time I switch play. There’s got to be a way for both pairs of joy cons to be synced at the same time, no? Thanks in advance.

tanman 01-19-25 08:38 PM

Re: Nintendo Switch: Building a New Generation of Hardware from Scratch

You don't have to sync them every time but you do have to tell the system which controllers you want to use and the way you want to use them. Go to controllers and hit the reorder to get it to reset which controllers you're currently using. Or it will use whatever controller you used to wake the system. Just hit L&R to tell it which one you're currently using.

That thing is hysterical. How well does it work?
Though I'm sticking with PSVR2 instead for my light gun simulation.

It works well. It’s not like the real thing, but it is fun. The gun is pretty accurate after tweaks, but very responsive and yes it looks ridiculous. But I’ve been waiting to play a light gun again, ever since Sega CD, which is probably last time I played one. It’s been a lot of nostalgic fun.

If SMB: Odyssey has a metacritic score of 97, why isn’t it listed on the bottom of metacritic site with all the other highest rated games of all time?
