I was just going to buy Pikmin 4 outright but then they announced Mario Wonder which made the deal enticing enough.
You can buy the one month, I did, with the caveat that when you use a voucher it has to be active, so wait until both games are out or pay 8 bucks for 2 one month memberships.

You can pre-order Mario Wonder now and it will be valid when the game comes out regardless of your status that that time.

Perfect. Thanks Decker & Gatordeb. Guess I'll go ahead and pre-order and go with the 1-month.

You sure about that? I pre ordered Pikmin 4 back in May I think and my pre order was canceled because my online subscription had lapsed. I had to pay $4, order, then cancel again.

Pretty sure. From the Nintendo Switch Game Vouchers FAQ's

Do I need a Nintendo Switch Online membership to redeem a Nintendo Switch Game Voucher?

Yes. You must be part of an active, paid membership to redeem a voucher. If your membership ends while you have an unused voucher, you can still use the voucher after you begin any new paid Nintendo Switch Online membership before the voucher expires. The voucher expiration date will not be extended for the time you do not have an active membership.

Any game redeemed with a voucher will be available to the Nintendo Account that redeemed it regardless of Nintendo Switch Online membership status.

That is true, but if you redeem a voucher for a game, you have bought the game -- I think. Can't get any further confirmation...

Though now that you mention it, the voucher really gets redeemed the week before the game gets released. I got an email for Pikmin 4 about that time. So maybe that's the case with the redemption of a voucher. You might be right about that.

I think so. Because once I subscribed again and pre ordered again, the game (albeit unplayable at the time) showed up on the Switch games list.

My 14yo son has already clocked over a dozen hours on the TCG already. In fact, he's playing it as I am trying this.
Good thing school starts again on Monday.

I bought Pikmin 4 and pre-ordered Mario. It does pop up a confusing screen explaining things. The way I read it is that you can cancel your preorder (and get your voucher back) up to one week prior to release. After that you're locked in because it pre-loads.

I don't think it had anything to do with Online being active or not-owning the game. You bought the game, there's no way they could cancel it because you aren't an online member. I'm sure we'd have heard all kinds of backlash if they ran their system like that. You bought a game, you own the game. I assume that also applies to the pre-order even though my account won't be active at launch because I already paid for it.

I quoted it, it pretty much says you have to be an online member to buy it. The way preorders with vouchers work is that about a month before release it "buys" it, preordering is not buying it in their view, and at whatever moment that voucher activates into a purchase, online must be on. If online is not active at that time, your voucher will be released back from the game and available to use again, you won't lose the voucher, but you won't get the game.

Lame. So no real savings with vouchers then unless you want their online service.

The vouchers are meant to be a benefit of having their online service, a perk, people have found a workaround.

I'm gonna wait til a game comes out I want and pay another month then, $98 for two games. Going to do another one of those that never goes on sale. Good thing vouchers never expire.

Picked up the 8BitDo Lite 2 Bluetooth controller today for about $35 shipped. It’s about 10-15% too small for my liking, but is perfect for smaller hands.

You can get a 3D printed comfort grip for it on Etsy for $10.

I’ll try it out for awhile and if I don’t like it, I’ll send it back.

Actually…

*Paid Nintendo Switch Online membership required at the time of purchase and redemption of Nintendo Switch Game Vouchers. Nintendo Switch Game Vouchers must be redeemed within 12 months from purchase date, have no cash value, and cannot be transferred, returned, or redeemed for cash. Each Nintendo Switch Game Voucher may be redeemed for one game offered as part of the catalog. To receive promotional value, Nintendo Switch Game Vouchers must be redeemed for two games with a cumulative price that is higher than the purchase price of the Nintendo Switch Game Vouchers. Nintendo Switch Game Vouchers may not be combined with any other sale, discount, or promotional offer unless otherwise specified.

We have several 8Bitdo controllers, they are awesome for all the system switching we do.

I played it on PC (well Steam Deck) a ton, but man Vampire Survivors has sucked me back in and now my kids as well (since they aren't allowed on the Steam deck). Such a simple premise but so well done.
