Yes, but one would assume that the whole point of journalism is to inform people of actual things using proper context and nuance in order for greater understanding. But no, we now live in a click-bail world, where all "news" outlets want is peoples attention, not to inform them.

Used to be a time, not too long ago, when people understood this and saw true journalism as a loss-leader but a necessity. Now, fuck it, they gotstagitpaied!
Anyhoo, we better hope that these (DDoS attcks) don't become a regular thing. This is a worrying trend, especially since every day more people are realizing how easy it is to push this button in the internet, and grind it to a halt. Even if these Lizard Squad goons go away, what's to stop some bored kid in Russia from doing this to, say, Google? That's right, there is no defense against this kind of DDoS, for anyone. Not even Google.
The only solution is to fix the fundamental issue with the very fabric of how the internet works, and that can only be done by throwing it all out and building a new one from scratch. The current internet works on a protocol designed in the '70s when nobody could conceive of, not just how huge it would be and how reliant we'd be on it, but how it could be exploited and used as a weapon. These goons see the internet like a video game, and with DDoS attacks, they found a way to kill the game by exploiting a weakness.
So I'm afraid it's only going to be easier and easier to exploit this weakness, not just with videogames, but with everything. Which makes the whole idea of things being so internet reliant absurd. It's not a problem of security, but one of fragility.

It has nothing to do with "security", and everything to do with how the internet as a whole is set up. When you bombard a server with enough bots, no one can get through. And while there's some measures they can take by allowing a greater number of "requests" so people can get in, if the attack is strong enough, it will deny service to most people.
Here's a Simpsons reference that explains it well...

There is often a link to viruses, though, as in compromised systems being used in these ddos attacks without the owner even knowing. No way ddos guys are just using their own hardware in the basement of grandma's garage.
So if you're some family who just bought this system, how do you find out what's going on? Because there sure aren't any error codes or anything saying what the problem is. I'd probably return the thing as defective.
And yeah, going to settings and unchecking the connect to Internet box let me load infinity. But why does this dumb game phone home anyway? It doesn't even get to a menu.

I liked this guy's response to the situation and these dicks' reasoning for doing what they did.
I know, right?
If someone broke into my house and stole everything I wouldn't think to myself "the best solution to this problem is to buy more things than the thief can carry".
The proper solution would be to find them or catch them, and then send them to jail.

The problem I see with them giving the 3,000 vouchers is that those vouchers are valued at 99 bucks apiece. That is almost 300,000 dollars in services that they are giving away. Now, most likely those vouchers will be sold off to other people for less than the 99 dollars they are worth but also not given away for free. Wouldn't what they are doing be some sort of extortion and possibly be considered some sort of wire fraud? Hopefully, they turn around and use the vouchers that they "gave" them to identify the recipient(s) and start putting these people where they belong: on the end of some hardcore criminals' dicks.

It was a doctor explaining to Mr. Burns that he had so many diseases attacking him, that none of them could get through, which Burns took as to mean he was indestructible.

Supposedly, each voucher is for a lifetime 500gb online data storage or something like that and valued at 99 bucks apiece. Anyways, doing something criminal that gets someone else to fork over something of monetary value, especially of this amount, to stop your criminal actions should be another crime in of itself.

I have at least 4 providers I get the same or more cloud storage from for free
the one true statement in the article posted above, it pains me to say, is that of the incompetence of Sony

"There is a chance that I will get caught, and I personally am not really that worried about it, to be honest," a Lizard Squad member said in the BBC interview. "If I get caught, then I get caught. Maybe I'll end up serving time, or maybe I'll end up helping companies, help them get better I guess."
-I hope these idiots take the bait If MS or Sony hire them and when they show up for interview via Skype they track them down and arrest the asshats.
"Lizard Squad seems convinced that what they're doing is for the "greater good."
-One or two things will happen. Either some low level employees get Laid off from the cost of all this or PS3's PSN will be shut down sooner than we think.

There is a level of incompetency in almost any business out there. However, just because it may exist doesn't mean that it should be exploited. Besides, there isn't much that neither MS or Sony could have done to stop this attack which has affected many other gaming sites in the past. Sony does need to take some of that money and get better servers, though.

Sounds good to me. They can keep their Sony Music subscription though.
