Re: Just Cause 3 (12/1/2015)
Finished it. Not 100%, but I liberated everything and completed the missions.
Compared to JC2, I'd say JC3 had the better "toys" (weapons, vehicles, wing-suit), but JC2 definitely had the better world/"playground". JC2's world was far more varied, with more locations and different things to to do. JC2 had an actual big urban city comparable to GTA, and JC3 had what felt like a half fished capital city, no big airport and villages that were just copied and pasted across the map. Actually, with JC3, it felt like they just gave up on putting things in the map halfway through, as that last big land mass is mostly empty and lifeless.
JC3 had more missions, but JC2 had much better and more varied missions.
What really hurt JC3 were the forced online connectivity and the way they integrated challenges in the game. But the biggest issue was the mostly lifeless open world.
Thought the best part of JC3 is David Tennant as the propaganda minister - he's freaking hilarious, especially as he becomes more and more unhinged as you liberate more outposts.

Is anyone still playing this on PS4? Has there been any patches or updates released to address the technical issues from launch?
I'm going to be out of town next week with a whole lot of time on my hands and nothing to really keep me busy buy my PS4. I've played pretty much everything I want to play, with the exception of JC3. With all the bad word of mouth around launch, I wanted to wait until it was more stable before picking it up.

Totally agree with you. The sandbox for JC2 was outstanding and i think maybe this caused problems for JC3. How to make a new sandbox thats asgood but feels fresh? Well certain aspects for JC3 worked, but as you said it was way too much copy/paste or just open space. Even the volcano island felt wasted. In JC2 you had the secret island with the old WWII bunkers and huge electrical array. That was just a small extra really in the game was wasy far better than anything in JC3. The cities were a huge thing to miss out on, and whilst they may seem like they have been done over and over in the GTA games, it was something that JC3 needed. The second game literally had cities, mountains, deserts, forests, jungle, beaches, villages, hell even a NASA center, huge Arecibo like dish, Moutainside Hotel with large waterfall and skiing villages. It was incredible. All the bases in JC3 felt identical as well, it made attacking them simply depetitive.
I was excited as hell about JC3 prior to release. If they do a JC4 then i am seriously doubtful it will be a return to form.

Jim Sterling actually touches on this game in his latest episode..and it sort of makes sense...basically saying Just Cause 3 was going to be an online only experience at first.

Yeah, that makes sense. Probably why so much of the land mass seems useless, so it'll be one big online playground. Also why the single player missions are so mundane, because they had to slap them together last minute. This whole online only thing is really shitting the bed on a lot of games!

Re: Just Cause 3 (12/1/2015)
Creating online only games is such a stupid move by games companies. I would love to know the number of regular gamers that play online and how many do not. I imagine the number offline is way more.
I hope after this mess and the feedback for lack of campaign on Battlefront that games companies go back to concentrating on single player experiences.

Still not "every".
And if you strip out their local elements, they'd be dead in the water, just as the community for SW Battlefront is already dwindling.
Also, I'd say both GTA and Minecraft have bigger single-player elements than multi. And everyone I know who buys Madden/FIFA/NBA plays them locally, far more than online.
Just because they have an online component doesn't make it their selling point.

LOL I didn't say every. I said "every save one".
It's not their selling point, but it's what's making them money. For example: https://www.vg247.com/2015/09/23/gta...ve-gta-online/
People you know might be playing these games offline, but they aren't in the majority. Studios wouldn't keep chasing "online only" if it wasn't making them money. The industry chased "$10 used game online passes" and people said "screw that" and so it stopped. But always online games are here to stay.

Firstly, Rockstar confirmed that the entire original GTA 5 team who worked on the single player game are now all working on GTA Online.
As a result, GTA Online is Rockstar’s priority. Although it never specifically said there won’t be any single-player story DLC, that looks to be the case. There won’t be GTA 5’s version of the Ballad of Gay Tony or The Lost and the Damned. Once promised as a “substantial” update, the stories of Michael, Trevor and Franklin seem to be over.

But you're trying to make the point that those games are successful because they're multiplayer focused - I'd say they are successful in spite of it, as they also happen to be the most marketed games as well, not to mention parts of long-running franchises that were successful way before they went online - that has far more to do with them being in the top ten than them being always online.

JC3 dropped the ball... I suspect JC4 won't make the same mistake and will go back to its single player roots with added elements for MP.

I finally started playing this. I am maybe 8 hours in. My expectation were lowered because of the reviews and reactions...but I am still disappointed so far. Just Cause 2 was one of the best games last generation. While not the best game, It had moments of pure fun that matched anything else. This game just feels empty. Sort of like they ran out of ideas, or took large parts out of the game to dish out as dlc later. It is not a bad game. In fact it is fun at times, but I can see myself giving up on it before I finish.

Yeah, I stopped playing it a long time ago. All I wanted was for it to be just more of the same, but somehow it's a way inferior version. Less fun.

It was pretty lackluster as a stand alone game but I still like playing it hot-seat with a group of friends to see who can do the craziest stuff.

JC2 was great for just messing around. Attaching cars to unsuspecting planes taking off was comedy gold.

The biggest disappointment for me was the world. JC2's world had a lot variety, with landscapes, cites, structures, etc. This one seems like they just copy/pasted 3 different types of environments over a huge area. A very boring world. It can be pretty in some spots though.
