re: The PlayStation 4 / PS4 Thread: Still Going Strong
Are there sets out there that have HDR without being a 4K set? I remember on PS4 launch day arguing with some tool who thought that he was going to go home with his new console and start gaming and watching video in 4K.

Wait... so the PS4 Pro isn't coming with an UHD-BD player? Really?

You'll probably still need a 4K UHD TV, since those are the only ones that support HDR, but I could see an original PS4 sending a 1080p HDR signal to one.

Thanks Jay. That's kind of how I expected it to be. Seems really strange to me, but
it sounds good on paper I guess.

It's possible that they just didn't mention it, since the presentation seemed focused on games. It does seem really unlikely that it wouldn't be able to play UHD-BD discs, since it seems more than capable of doing so.

re: The PlayStation 4 / PS4 Thread: Still Going Strong
It would really be counterproductive and shortsighted to create a console for UHD without a means to play UHD discs. I sure hope it was just something they expected us to assume rather than telling us. It will be a major factor on whether I get it right away or wait until later.

Stuff.tv seems to have "confirmed" that there's no UHD drive in the system. I'd wait for a second source before believing that at this point.

It looks very much as though the PS4 Pro does NOT play 4K Blu-rays. Trying to get confirmation. #PlayStationMeeting

From BBC News:

That's just.... odd. Did they not want to pay the royalty fee?
The main technical difference would be getting the drive to read the 66GB dual-layer discs UHD Blu-ray uses, which seems to be a minimal tweak.

However, unlike Microsoft's Xbox One S, the PS4 Pro will not be able to play 4K Blu-ray movies - a move which has disappointed some fans.
"The PlayStation is primarily a gaming platform, and everything we do is to make the gaming experience as seamless as possible," Jim Ryan, head of PlayStation Europe, told the BBC.
"We recognise that the trend these days is to use streaming services, and we have a great partnership with Netflix offering 4K movies in its app. Both PlayStations continue to support Blu-ray discs."

No UHD drive then no need to drop another 400 bones at this point. I'd rather have the drive that is able to read the higher capacity discs, which makes sense considering...you know....they already push the capacity of the discs for certain games in the current iteration. They dropped the ball here regardless of whether or not they are focused on games.

The spec does call for the drives to be able to read a triple-layer disc, maxing out a t 100GB capacity. However, I don't think any triple-layer discs have been made, and it seems doubtful that they may ever be made.

MS managed to place a capable drive in their Slim, and Sony even has a standalone UHD Blu-ray player out, so they have the drives.
Maybe they don't want to cannibalize the standalone player market like the PS3 did with the Blu-ray market, but MS has already beaten them to the punch, so you'd think they'd just go with it.

True. However, the lack of UHD playback will be a very hard thing for me to overcome. It was the one thing that would have pushed me to upgrade the main set in my house to 4K. However, I'm not buying a new set, Pro and another component just to play the discs that Pro should have been made to play regardless of their "focus on games." Do they really think by focusing on games that it will get the general public to sway away from videos and more towards games? They really need to meet the needs of people across the board.

I thought Batman V Superman was a 100GB triple layer disc.
But, yeah, I was going to be a day 1 purchasers of a 4K blu-ray capable PS4 Pro, but they don't want my money bad enough.
I'll start with the $299 Xbox One S, and then hold out for the Oppo as my dedicated player when it's released

Damn, that thing is beefy. November 10th, so they are getting it out before Black Friday and just weeks after Playstation VR.
Also comes with a 1TB hard drive, so they are only $50 over the XB1 slim with the 1TB (although, yes, it won't be able to play 4K Blu Ray discs)
Now we wait for the bundle announcement with Playstation VR & Pro for $799.
Except MS is willing to be more aggressive since they are in a distant second place. Sony has a more powerful console and VR coming out this year. Their lead is only going to grow now.
