No more plastic part on the top that slides off...Hopefully it will still be easy to change out the HD.

Really surprised that it can't play UHD, although I'm not sure if it would be a deal breaker for me since i've become less interested in physical media. Curious omission, since I can't imagine it would have cost that much. I know I wasn't going to jump on this right away anyway having only got a PS4 last Christmas, but at least the price is right.
Polygon has some picture comparisons between all the models. Kind of funny that it looks like there's just another "layer"

It'll be interesting how fast Microsoft can get Scorpio out and actually have a device out there with more power and UHD playback.

It was the first 100GB UHD Blu-ray disk, from what I can find:

Good to know it's possible, although I'm thinking most releases will stick with 66GB for the time being.

Wow, that's disappointing. I'd been holding out on upgrading the PS3 for this, but I guess I might as well just get the current PS4.

I'd buy a slim for $299. Unfortunately it's gonna be $379 in Canada which is $400+ with taxes. Too much for a casual gamer like me (heck, all I want is Uncharted 4 and Madden 17).
I might look for a used PS4 "fat" instead since there's probably going to be a bunch of those for sale from people who upgrade.

Ya this is basically to sell 4k tvs
The games will barely look better in 4k and will run at 30fps if that

Come on, don't drink the Sony Kool aid. It is almost inexcusable to launch an upgraded system but not allow UHD playback on it. MS did it on a cheaper refresh of their current system. Even if everything is eventually streaming, there is a large portion of consumers who still want/use physical media. This is basically a slap in the face to those people.

But maybe VR is the killer app and I'm just not giving it enough credit. I know I don't really care that much, though.
And at least they say the focus is on games, as opposed to whatever the heck the two consoles have been going for with social media integration and the like.

The lack of UHD playback is baffling. I can only assume they'll include that in a refresh about the time the next Xbox One Scorpio upgrade comes out.

I know this is "DVDTalk" so you guys do but you all realize no one else gives a shit about physical media anymore? Right?
Edit: Just to clarify I was specifically talking about movies not video games.

So you're saying that the console should be like a modern laptop and not include a disc drive at all?

Honestly, I don't think they give a fuck about 4K discs. It's not the revolution blu ray was, so why would it be in their best interest to support it? Right now, it's all about price. And the fact that this can come in at $400 is pretty damn good with those specs, especially since people have been speculating that Scorpio will come in between $500 to $600.

I don't care one way or the other but that is not going to happen because of games and retail. My point was about movies. The average consumer streams/downloads their movies they don't care about blu-ray and they especially don't give a shit about 4K blu-rays.

They can pry my physical media from my cold dead hands.
This is a baffling decision from the pioneers of Blu-ray. It's a move that a company on top makes when they think they are untouchable.
