I didn't ignore all the other considerations, and I agree with you that Extra Credits "had established a community of people with their show, and established some level of trust." However, I did disagree with you that the situations were totally different, and are comparable on at least a basic level. Your subsequent analogy was just bad, especially as it painted one situation as definitively bad, instead of just suspicious.

And, again, ignoring the Extra Credits fundraiser, there's plenty other health-related fundraisers on IndieGogo, all with varying levels of details and "proof."

And there is absolutely nothing wrong with that. I want to believe as well. Anyway, I know most of you are skeptical as hell, but interesting tidbit, I went on a limb and sent her a friend request on Facebook a few days ago, and she accepted today. Interesting girl from her posts on there. She is troubled, that's bloody obvious, but I don't know, its doesn't seem to be as cut and dry as one would think.

Anyway, still no money back from indiegogo. They got til wednesday as far as I'm concerned.

Odd that there has been no update to this. The Destructoid editor says he got the true story, but won't report it:
I wish I could tell you the details of the post. Please trust that I did do the reporting, once our readers stated suspicion. I spoke to many parties and got the full story, as soon as humanly possible, to the point where it's all I did for two days and fell behind in my editorial duties. Unfortunately, I can't share that publicly (nor will I share it with anyone privately, I'm sorry). It's for the benefit of everyone if we move on and look at this as something to learn from.

It's interesting; from the wording it appears that this fundraiser wasn't on the up-and-up, but for some reason they either don't feel like or can't reveal the truth.

Project Zombiod has decided to give the money they had raised (that IndieGogo refunded) to Médecins Sans Frontières:

I don't believe anyone who says "Believe me, I know the truth. I just can't tell you. Neener neener."

Maybe the reality is ridiculously embarrassing.

Turns out, it was just gas.

Probably the real story was told off the record, or there wasn't enough verifiable facts to avoid a possible libel suit if he tried to tell the story second hand.

I got a novel idea: how about you do some "reporting" before your readers have to raise some suspicions? Maybe talk to the subject? Ask for verification? Speak with doctors? Speak with insurance companies? Research the lawsuits? Anything?

That was kinda the point of the thread the comment was on, and they directly addressed that in a part that wmansir didn't quote:

This has been a wakeup call to us all, and we are discussing new policies that will prevent us from running into these problems in the future.

Seems like something sites that fund these ventures should be the ones verifying, to me.

Well, the sites aren't providing the funding, just a venue/forum to receive funding on, minus their cut. If they were providing their own money, you damn well bet they'd thoroughly vet the projects.

That said, Indiegogo has some measures in place, and one could argue that such measures worked in this case, as the campaign was stopped and the money refunded. Indiegogo had also previously ended a campaign that had been started by a friend, and had suspended this campaign earlier, although they later let it continue for unknown reasons.

Our anti-fraud systems constantly monitor the performance of our product, helping us identify and eliminate fraudulent activity and scams...

When you’re contemplating contributing to a campaign, consider all of the information available to decide whether and how much to give. It’s important to consider the strategic plan behind the campaign and to understand how your contribution will be used. Get familiar with the team running the campaign. Check the Funders tab on the campaign page to see if others have already contributed. If a campaign is marked as “Verified Nonprofit,” you can be sure that your contribution will go directly to the nonprofit organization identified.
So they claim to have anti-fraud measures as well as a way to verify nonprofits.

Kickstarter, by comparison, is considerably more lax:
http://www.kickstarter.com/help/faq/kickstarter+basics
Does Kickstarter screen projects before they launch?
Only a quick review to make sure they meet our project guidelines. Kickstarter does not investigate a creator's ability to complete their project. Backers ultimately decide the validity and worthiness of a project by whether they decide to fund it. See the Accountability section for more...

Kickstarter does not guarantee projects or investigate a creator's ability to complete their project. On Kickstarter, backers (you!) ultimately decide the validity and worthiness of a project by whether they decide to fund it...

Kickstarter's Terms of Use require creators to fulfill all rewards of their project or refund any backer whose reward they do not or cannot fulfill. (This is what creators see before they launch.) We crafted these terms to create a legal requirement for creators to follow through on their projects, and to give backers a recourse if they don't. We hope that backers will consider using this provision only in cases where they feel that a creator has not made a good faith effort to complete the project and fulfill.

Yes, I did read the comments. They say, "We've been talking about this since the IndieGoGo story and are going to be way more selective of what we promote going in the future." That's not my point. If they claim to be reporters, they should be investigating the claim, not deciding on whether they "promote" it or not. If they want to be taken seriously, it's time for them to put on their big boy/girl journalism pants and do the work necessary. Reporting/journalism isn't regurgitating press releases or posting nifty things they find on the internet.

See, the way I read that statement was that investigating the claim was one way they were going to be more selective.

Welp, just for the few folks who did contribute...it took a paypal claim but I got my $20 back. It was resolved fairly quickly too, just a couple of days. Might as well, since the person isn't getting the money anyway.

Re: Dying Indie Developer seeks crowd funding

Yeah, on Facebook she's been making random very occasional comments about not wanting to live anymore, I can't do it, etc within the last couple of weeks. Very disconcerting, very sad too. She's seeking attention, that's for sure, but if she did go ahead and end it, its a tragedy regardless whether she had metal poisoning or not. It's a shame, darn shame.

Re: Dying Indie Developer seeks crowd funding

Allistair Pinsof of Destructoid has written a post claiming that Chloe is transgender, and was raising the funds for sex reassignment surgery. He claims she had threatened suicide if he told anyone, which is why he kept quiet until now.
http://www.twitlonger.com/show/n_1rk99tp

Allistair caused a minor controversy when some initial tweets from him referred to Chloe as a "he," and said that SRS wasn't a "vital" procedure
